"Daydreamer" by Charles Hyman | 9-12th grade | Simpsonville, SC | ArtFields Art Competition This self-portrait is a strong piece juxtaposing the look of boredom with a contrasting background of whimsical doodles. Hyman was attempting to illustrate how outer appearances are not always telling the whole story. Charcoal and ink were used to create even more contrast between the two ideas happening in the work. Within this self-portrait, I am exploring the complexity of my seemingly simple thoughts or daydreams. I am contrasting my outer, bored expression with the chaotic, whimsical doodles in the background that symbolize my daydreams. This goes to show that even when I look unengaged on the outside, my brain is thinking a surplus of thoughts and ideas.
