URTEXT EDITION

This is an urtext/critical/scholarly/scientific edition (or a simple re-engraving). Any commentary or critical apparatus, if protected by copyright, should not be included in the scan(s) available here. This edition was published by Bärenreiter in Germany over 25 years ago and is in the public domain in its country of origin.

In Canada, new editions/re-engravings of public domain works (when not including new original material) should be in the public domain due to failing to meet the threshold of originality. In most European Union countries, these editions (except new original material) are generally protected for no more than 25 years from publication (30 years in Poland). In the United States, copyright can only apply to new creative work, and the re-engraving of a public domain piece (not including new additions of creative material) should not qualify for a new copyright, despite copyright claims (which properly would only apply to new material).

You may need to check the publication date and details of the work's first publication in order to determine the work's copyright status, especially for the United States.

The first version of the song was composed around 1820, the words for the poem having the incipit 'Fischer harrt am Brückenbogen'. By the time Schubert wrote his second version, around 1828, Schlechta had revised the words to the poem. For this 1st text revision, the poem begins with the words 'Tom lehnt harrend auf der Brücke'. After Schubert's death, Schlechta revised the poem yet again (the incipit to the second text revision being 'Harrt ein Fischer auf der Brücke'). Because of these changes, there is usually much confusion associated with this song, as there are two different versions of the score in different keys, and three different versions of the poem. It is also not helpful that the Deutsch number of the second version (originally D.949) was reassigned to D.639 after the 1978 revision of the Deutsch Catalogue. To further clarify, these are the full versions of Schlechta's text, as associated with Schubert's two versions:

Schubert's 1st version (D major) and 2nd version (B-flat major), original text:

Fischer harrt am Brückenbogen
Ach so lange Zeit:
Blicket sehnlich in die Wogen,
Denn sie ist noch weit! –

Und sie schleichet um den Hügel,
Und das holde Bild
Leuchtet aus dem Wellenspiegel
Lächelnd und so mild.

Und er sieht’s. Und durch Blumenränder
Schwimmt der süsse Schein –
Und er hält sich am Geländer,
Sonst zieht’s ihn hinein!

Schubert's 2nd version (B-flat major), 1st text revision:

Tom lehnt harrend auf der Brücke,
Die Geliebte säumt,
Schmollend taucht er seine Blicke
In den Bach und träumt.

Doch die lauscht im nahen Flieder,
Und ihr Bildchen strahlt
Jetzt aus klaren Wellen wider,
Treuer nie gemalt.

Und er sieht's! Und er kennt die Bänder,
Kennt den süßen Schein,
Und er hält sich am Geländer,
Sonst zieht's ihn hinein.

Schubert's 2nd version (B-flat major), 2nd text revision:

Harrt ein Fischer auf der Brücke,
Die Geliebte säumt,
Schmollend taucht er seine Blicke
In den Bach und träumt.

Doch die lauscht im nahen Flieder,
Und ihr Bildchen strahlt
Jetzt aus klaren Wellen wider,
Treuer nie gemalt.

Und er sieht's! Und er kennt die Bänder,
Kennt den süßen Schein,
Und er hält sich am Geländer,
Sonst zieht's ihn hinein.
