First published by Anton Diabelli along with an abridged and transposed version of the Adagio in D-flat major, D.505. The original version of the Adagio was first published in 1897 in the "Revisions-Bericht" of the Alte Gesamt-Ausgabe, and is now generally accepted to in fact be the missing slow movement of the Piano Sonata in F minor, D.625. This would suggest a composition date for the Adagio of September 1818, along with the remainder of the F minor sonata.
The Rondo, in exchange, has been suggested by many to be the missing fourth movement of the Piano Sonata in E minor, D.566.
