Development of the cellulase aims to enhance bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass such as empty fruit bunches (EFB) that resists hydrolysis due to the complex structure. Ionic liquids (ILs) have proved their ability to digest lignocellulose to be accessible by enzymes and thus it is expected to achieve a significant outcome by conducting both treatment and hydrolysis in one step by leaping cellulose recovery with anti-solvents. Palm kernel cake (PKC) was utilized as the primary media for cellulase enzyme production in solid-state bioconversion (SSB) by Trichoderma reesei. The PKC-cellulase (PKC-Cel) stability was assessed in several ionic liquids (ILs). For a duration of 6 hours, the PKC-Cel maintained significant levels of stability at the optimum conditions (50°C and pH 5.0). These findings co...
The production of the biodegradable poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) onto sago starch biopolymer... more The production of the biodegradable poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) onto sago starch biopolymer (Starch-gPMMA) was carried out using potassium persulfate (PPS) as an initiator. PMMA was grafted onto starch using PPS as an initiator under nitrogen gas atmosphere. The maximum percentage of grafting (%G) was determined to be 90%. The optimum conditions were as follows: reaction temperature: 500C, the amount of monomer: 47 m.moles, the amount of PPS: 1.82 m.moles, and reaction period: 1.5 hr. The copolymers produced were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry (FTIR), The FTIR spectra of the copolymers clearly indicated the presence of characteristic peaks of PMMA and starch, which suggested that PMMA had been successfully grafted on the starch.

APG is rich in soluble dietary fibers as well as organic compounds. In this study quantitation of the levels of total phenolics content (TPC) and antioxidant activities were conducted using ABTS and CUPRAC assays for APG extraction using pure solvents (methanol, ethanol, acetone) and their aqueous mixtures at 50% and 100%. The antioxidant levels were evaluated by 2,2’-azino-bis-(3-mthylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radical cation deculturization and cupric iron reducing capacity in the presence of neocuproine (CUPRAC) for the evaluation of reducing power, and (TPC) was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The solvent Methanol (50%) gave the best extraction ratio for APG presented by highest (TPC 60.78 mg GAE/100g of DW, CUPRAC 34.65 mg TE/100g DW, and, ABTS about 37.65 mg TE/100g DW respectively), followed by ethanol 50% extract. On the other hand, p...

The EFB represents about 10% of the total by-products generated which is either left in the plantation to provide organic nutrients to trees or burned illegally. Therefore a promising and comparatively new approach for the production of activated carbon from EFB for removal of Zn from aqueous solution was carried out in laboratory. Cost effectiveness, availability and adsorptive properties are the main criteria for choosing the adsorbent (activated carbon) to remove heavy metals from wastewater. Considering these criteria many researchers have investigated activated carbons production from agricultural by-products and other wastes such as rice husk, rice straw, sugarcane bagasse, oil palm stone, olive waste cake, sewage sludge, paper mill sludge and municipal waste for different application especially industrial wastewate...

By mixing IL and cellulase enzyme (IL-E) in a single pot, the empty fruit bunch (EFB) was pretreated with simultaneous fermentation. Choline acetate [Ch][Ac], which has excellent biological compatibility and renewability, has been used for pretreatment. Chemical analysis, electron scanning microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the EFB and its hydrolysate. After 24 and 48 h of enzymatic hydrolysis, sugar yield improved from 0.058 g/g EFB in the crude (untreated) sample to 0.283 and 0.62 06 g/g in the IL-E phase. EFB hydrolysate demonstrates suitability for the production of ethanol (EtOH) with a yield of 0.275 g EtOH/g EFB in the presence of [Ch][Ac] without additional nutrients, compared to the low yield without IL pretreatment.

Approach: The methodology used in this paper involves fractionating methanol crude extracts of both Acacia seyal gum and Prebio-T-commercial, respectively. The cytotoxicity activity on human colon cancer cell lines for each fraction was studied using sulforhodamine B assay (SRB assay). Both samples, Acacia seyal gum and Prebio-T-commercial (PTC), were analysed precisely using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. Findings: Based on the analysis, more cytotoxicity activity was identified in the sample obtained from Acacia seyal gum (IC50=13.36µg/mL) compared to PTC (IC50=17.18µg/mL). Regarding the flavonoids content (FC), quercetin was the only flavonoids detected in the samples, found to be approximate of 4,640µg/100g for Acacia seyal gum, almost double the value of 2,560µg/100g for PTC. Implications: The implications of this study are the evidence of flavonoids content and anti-cancer activity for both Acacia seyal gum and PTC used in folk medicine, as well as anticipation of cancer cell growth. It is expected that the proposed methods will give a noble contribution to the possible use of their bioactive compounds as natural anti-cancer agents

In this study, cellulase (PKC-Cel) obtained from Trichoderma reesei (RUTC30) through fermentation displayed good stability in choline acetate [Cho]OAc, a biodegradable IL. Empty fruit bunches (EFB) were subjected to single-step hydrolysis in an IL-enzyme system. Response surface methodology was employed to maximize ethanol production. Three parameters were optimized, namely sugar loading, inoculum concentration, and agitation. The distilled ethanol purity was 98.6% (v/v). The ethanol yield was 87.94% of the theoretical yield, which was 0.275 g ethanol g À1 EFB. In comparison, the non-IL system produced 0.127 g g À1 EFB. The yield coefficients Y ps , Y xs , and Y px were 0.552, 0.148, and 3.69 g g À1. The specific growth rate ðlÞ was determined to be 0.264 h À1 and the ðl max Þ was 0.777 h À1 .

The production of myco-coagulant was achieved using several low-cost lignocellulolytic substrates, namely coco peat, sawdust, palm kernel cake, and rice bran as sources of carbon and nitrogen. This research involves the study of both the effect of lignocellulolytic substrates and the parameters involved in the fermentation process for myco-coagulant production. Coco peat was chosen as a suitable lignocellulolytic substrate to serve as a carbon source for producing myco-coagulant, potentially reducing the turbidity by 84.6% from the kaolin suspension. Sawdust, palm kernel cake, and rice bran showed 33.06%, 30.18, and 21.18 %, respectively. Furthermore, a statistical approach to the Plackett-Burman design was conducted to evaluate the significant parameters that affect the production of myco-coagulant. Eleven fermentation process parameters were select...

Engineering education in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries is not new in its starting as it almost as same as most other parts of the world when starting with conventional engineering programme as civil, chemical electrical and mechanical engineering programmes, which focused mainly at that time on engineering design, manufacturing, testing and production. But with the development of human and market need, new directions of engineering courses has been setup, today fields of engineering has extended to cover different engineering skill, with more than 40 engineering categories from mechanical to aerospace, material to safety, electrical to telecommunications, civil to environmental, and more, engineering fields have constricted and advanced to key areas of engineering areas’. As a result many issues and challenges facing the engineering education development in OIC countries need way forward. This paper will focus on this development together with issues and challenges for way forward.
This study tries to assess wastewater quality in textile industry, one of the critical issues to ... more This study tries to assess wastewater quality in textile industry, one of the critical issues to be well thought-out is the exposure to chemicals substances, as it might represent a health concern in textile industry and is subject to different health occupational limits. This paper attempts to describe the factors which might have an impact in the textile industry as high concentration of non-biodegradable compounds contributes to increased biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the wastewater bodies. Dyes found in wastewater from textile industries are carcinogenic, mutagenic or teratogenic. Biological processes involving certain bacteria, fungi, activated carbon and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are promising methods for treating waste water but these methods are either inefficient or ineffective. These complexities necessitates search for new approaches that will offset all the shortcomings of the present solutions to the challenges faced with textile wastewater management. Furthermore, the study produced a new biosorbent by the immobilization of fungal biomass on carbon nanotubes. The new biosorbent is called “carbon nanotubes immobilized biomass (CNTIB)”. The biosorbent was produced by immobilization technique. A potential fungal strain, Aspergillus niger was selected on the basis of biomass production. Aspergillus niger was immobilized on carbon nanotubes. Isotherm studies showed that the experimental data better fitted with the Langmuir isotherm for CNTIB (R2= 0.919) when compared to Freundlich isotherm (R2= 0.892). Notwithstanding the aforementioned information, the kinetic study however indicated that the biosorption followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model which suggests that chemisorption is most likely the process through which biosorption took place. The kinetics models include the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models and they have been applied to study the kinetics of the adsorption process in this study. To study the kinetic of Malachite green dye onto CNTIB, its experimental data were fitted using the pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic models. At all the concentrations studied, comparing all R2 values, those of the pseudo second-order kinetics were found to be more than 0.90. According to (Wang and Chen)Bayramoglu et al., (2002), pseudo-second order assumed that the rate limiting step was biosorption. There must be sharing or exchange of electrons between the biosorbent and the biosorbate. The study investigated the equilibrium and adsorption of Malachite green on CNTIB at various concentrations. The results of biosorption evaluation using the active biosorbent for dye removal showed that the dye was decolorized with a dye uptake of 98% at a dye concentration of 60mg/L. Isotherm studies showed that the experimental data better fitted with the Langmuir isotherm for CNTIB when compared to Freundlich isotherm.
Islamic insurance industry is experiencing a period of rapid growth in terms of its net contribut... more Islamic insurance industry is experiencing a period of rapid growth in terms of its net contributions and profit, however, at the same time, the development of this industry is still faced with tough obstacles and constraints due to the Shar'iah issues in some certain aspects. Islamic insurance operations need to be fine-tuned to meet the Islamic direction and the needs of Muslims. There are many different operational models with various Islamic jurisdictions trying to meet the needs of Muslims in general as regard Islamic insurance in the global Islamic economy. The two challenging issues that are studied are the ownership of the Islamic insurance risk fund and the surplus distribution accumulated from the risk fund. The findings reviewed that insurance principles contribute substantially to Islamic insurance operation (β = 0.405) justification in terms of Islamic features and operator fees (β =0.925) and (β =0.255) respectively.
