The third grade students are using the colors of a stop light to help them gauge their reading. If they are having green light thinking then they are able to comfortably understand the text. They are creating visible mind movies as they read. When they are using yellow light thinking they are applying fix up strategies to unknown words as they read. If they are using red light thinking, then they have encountered a part of the text that is hard to read so they must stop and make inferences.
