These were done by my Intermediate and Advanced 2-d students as a warm up/drawing review at the beginning of the year. I'm just a little tardy getting them posted. My Intermediate class had to do a ten step value scale and my Advanced kids a 15 step scale. They were allowed to be as creative as possible with their subjects that their scales were put into. The idea was to some up with a creative way of creating a scale with 11 values from black to white and everything in between. The human eye can only see 44 different values in between black and white. Apparently the most a person has ever created without using a computer is 12. Here are 11.

Been focusing so much on my 7th graders lately, so now I'd like to show off what my 2nd and 3rd year drawing students are starting off with. VALUE DEFINITION: VALUE is the darkness or lightness of a color of greyscale. Value can be use on a 2D SHAPE to make it appear as a 3D FORM. This is called SHADING. Here is an example of shapes before and after adding Value with pencil. When you create value, it should be Smooth, Even, and have Contrast. Take a S.E.C. to check your values.
