The contributors have all been influenced by Hart, either as students or as colleagues, and their responses are both critical and appreciative. The collection also includes a comprehensive bibliography of Hart's writings and speeches. The breadth of topics addressed by these essays reflects the wide-ranging contributions made by Hart to the discipline of philosophy. They deal with issues of reformational philosophy and theology as well as religious reflections and with questions of cultural criticism; they also explore the connections between Hart and philosophers in other traditions such as pragmatism, critical theory, and feminism. The theme that runs throughout Hart's work, argue the editors, is that philosophy must be responsible, must be pursued in the service of human flourishing.

Or is the very idea of a critical faith a contradiction in terms? This book argues for the possibility of critical faith. Playing on a double meaning of the word 'critical', the book suggests that faith not only shapes a critical (crucial) pattern for human life, but also suggests that such a pattern can be shaped in a critical (intellectually vigilant) way. Taking John Locke's reflection on the relationship between faith and reason as its point of departure, the book weaves a discussion of critical faith around a wide array of intellectual figures and conversations. The book concludes with a discussion of Jurgen Habermas's theory of communicative action, and assesses the merit of Habermas's understanding of critical rationality as a normative yardstick for the achievement of a critical faith.

Special Issue “Nihilism and the Meaning of Life: A Philosophical Dialogue
with James Tartaglia,” Journal of Philosophy of Life, Vol.7, No.1, 2017,
pp.1-315. Two years ago, in 2015, we published the book Reconsidering
Meaning in Life: A Philosophical Dialogue with Thaddeus Metz, and after
the publication, one of the contributors to the above book, James Tartaglia, published his own intriguing philosophical book on the meaning of life and its connection with nihilism, entitled Philosophy in a Meaningless Life: A System of Nihilism, Consciousness and Reality (Bloomsbury 2016). I thought it would be a good idea to have a symposium on his book in the Journal of Philosophy of Life.
I invited ten philosophers who have a strong interest in this topic, and
edited a special volume dedicated to Tartaglia’s book. After receiving their papers, I asked James to write a reply to each of them, and in July this year we published a special issue in the Journal. You can read all of them, along with the replies by Tartaglia, in this single book.
