Carlos Fraenkel proposes that we use this term to describe “the interpretation of the historical forms of a religion in philosophical terms”. Such a philosophical interpretation allows religious traditions to be utilized in service of a political-pedagogical program, the goal of which is orienting society towards the highest good: human excellence. Here, I outline the idea of a philosophical religion as it can be found in the Arabic tradition of rationalist Aristotelianism and scrutinize Spinoza’s ambiguous response to this idea. Despite his programmatic separation of theology and philosophy, I argue, Spinoza, at least in some crucial passages, shows himself to be engaged in the project of retrieving the truths of philosophy through the interpretation of Scripture. Thus, there are two contradictory strains at work in Spinoza’s philosophy of religion: he systematically denies that Scripture is the locus of truth, yet he articulates parts of his philo...

What is usually known as Schelling’s late thought, the system of negative and positive philosophy... more What is usually known as Schelling’s late thought, the system of negative and positive philosophy, is marked by a deep engagement with the question of the religious—and with Christianity in particular. Yet ironically, this does not mean that Schelling is in any immediate sense a resource for the project of developing a religious ethics, if what is meant by such an ethics is the articulation, evaluation, and prescription of moral norms such as might be provided by Christian scripture. Schelling instead mounts a fundamental critique of the possibility of such an ethical project, and does so, one might say, precisely in the name of Christianity. For ethics for Schelling is necessarily a question of universal moral norms imposed by reason upon itself; but the universality of this moral law is such that it cannot account for what in us touches most closely, and stands most in need, of the divine: our non-universalizable personhood. In a philosophical recasting of Paul’s critique of the L...

And yet, so this article asks, can the ugly be understood in its full force within the paradigm of an Idealist aesthetics such as Rosenkranz espouses?
Although in such a frame the ugly is not merely the absence of the beautiful, it can only ever be a secondary phenomenon which is subordinate to the sensuous appearance of the Idea; Rosenkranz consequently never progressed beyond affirming the always-already established primacy of the beautiful. Within a short space of time, however, the internal development of art would begin to challenge this primacy in earnest.
To illustrate this, the article focuses on the particularly visceral form of ugliness that is the disgusting, through a reading Rimbaud’s Venus Anadyomene, and concludes by arguing that a better understanding of the force of disgust compels us to reconsider and rethink, if not altogether abandon, the Idealist understanding of art as the sensuous appearance of the Idea.

How are we to understand the thematization of revelation at the heart of Schelling’s late thought... more How are we to understand the thematization of revelation at the heart of Schelling’s late thought—as the accomplishment of Idealism as science of the Absolute or as a metaphysical elaboration of Christianity? I will argue that the Schelling of the Spätphilosophie is not an Idealist on account of his rupture with ontotheology; neither does he abandon the philosophical for the theological. Schelling insists on the limited nature of a philosophy of the Absolute and complements it with a philosophy in which God as God successively but never finally reveals himself in history. He is thus a philosophical eschatologist.

The philosophy of Jacques Derrida is one of the milestones of twentieth century thought and is st... more The philosophy of Jacques Derrida is one of the milestones of twentieth century thought and is still of great influence in many disciplines today. This book offers a survey of many aspects of Derrida's work, mainly focusing on the significance of his thoughts for the domains of ethics, politics and religion. The main thesis of this study is that the key to a fruitful evaluation of the strong and weak points of his work can be found in its ambiguous relation to the metaphysical tradition. Usually Derrida's ideas, and deconstruction as it is practiced and manifested by many others, are seen as a critique of metaphysics. This is true, but it is also just one side of the matter. In many cases, especially in by far the most of Derrida's texts, deconstructions are as well a continuation and even an affirmation of the metaphysical tradition. Despite his continuous critique of metaphysical ways of thought, and despite the deconstructions of metaphysical constructions, Derrida's own style of thinking and writing is still driven by a metaphysical desire that includes a "hubris of metaphysics". Through this perspective, this study provides a profound evaluation of the significance of Derrida's philosophy for ethics, politics and religion.

Deze lijnen komen samen in het begrip ‘onwerkzaamheid’.
