Anna Saave is a postdoctoral researcher in feminist political economy with a background in environmental sciences and sustainability economics at Humboldt University, Berlin. Why are feminist perspectives, analyses, and actions vital to degrowth?

Feminist analyses of the historical dynamics of gender systems are fundamental to the work of cha... more Feminist analyses of the historical dynamics of gender systems are fundamental to the work of challenging growth-driven political economies, and of designing more equitable and balanced ecosocial systems. Feminist theories and methods that acknowledge and support diverse voices, knowledges, and practices are vital resources for building on heterodox degrowth movements. In dialogue with postcolonial, decolonial, indigenous, and anti-racist efforts, intersectional feminisms have been unlearning and disrupting conventional politics of knowing and action in ways that help forge more inclusive understandings and applications necessary for degrowth futures.

The article proposes three possible topics with regard to the changing nature of the emergent research field: introducing feminist economics as a mode of questioning, showing its historicity and spectrum, and asking the question of a unifying paradigm. Complementarily, the article identifies teaching methodologies and aspects to consider for teaching according to feminist economics' theoretical insights. This includes the role of experiences, the need for instructors to change perspectives, and the idea of caring and holding as starting points for a feminist pedagogy.

While degrowth has articulated a sophisticated critique of capitalistic growth not only from an environmental perspective, but also with respect to the structural function of growth for Welfare democracies and to its crisis, (re)thinking and framing work/labour in an envisioned degrowth society remains one of the biggest challenges within the degrowth discourse. After a detailed overview of the different perspectives on work/labour in the degrowth discourse, the paper focuses on the specific contribution of materialist ecofeminism. It concludes by indicating possible cross-fertilizations and alliances between degrowth and materialist ecofeminism with respect to social-ecological reproduction.

Widersprüche sind auch im Engagement für Postwachstum allgegenwärtig. Es ist nötig, bei der Gesta... more Widersprüche sind auch im Engagement für Postwachstum allgegenwärtig. Es ist nötig, bei der Gestaltung von Transformationen zu Postwachstumsgesellschaften die Komplexität der individuell-psychologischen Ebene explizit in den Blick zu nehmen und die Akzeptanz ihrer Widersprüchlichkeitnicht zu sanktionieren. Zwar ist es im Konkreten postwachstumsförderlich und vielleicht auch löblich, wenn Individuen ihren Alltag konsistent nach Postwachstumsvisionen ausrichten. Allerdings würde ein Fokus auf akzeptable/nicht-akzeptable bzw. gelungene/nicht-gelungene Praxis über den Umstand hinweg täuschen, dass es gesellschaftliche Strukturen sind, die es vielen Menschen verunmöglichen, Postwachstum konsistent zu leben (vgl. Lessenich 2016; Brand/Wissen 2017). Eine angemessene Berücksichtigung von Widerspruchserfahrungen und alltäglicher Ambivalenz vermag, die Verantwortung für Postwachstumstransformation von Individuen ein Stück weit zu lösen und macht den Weg frei, um gemeinsam – als unperfekte Aktivist*innen – die gesellschaftlich nicht-nachhaltigen Strukturen anzugehen.

This article describes four initiatives in which degrowth and feminist activists mobilize collabo... more This article describes four initiatives in which degrowth and feminist activists mobilize collaborative analysis and communication in efforts to influence paths through and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. The efforts work together to identify and advance actions that help our societies to address and emerge from this global disaster in more humane, just, and sustainable ways. We join other social movements in asking: How can we seize opportunities to build healthier values, social arrangements, and policies? To slow down the rush toward future disasters? Highlight is on caring and commoning as features of desired worlds ahead, and as means and methods in our own organization and activism.
