Several factors play pivotal role in making phytoextraction a successful technique. Soil fraction is an important parameter that may affect phytoextraction potential. There has been an increased realization on the role of chelates in accelerating metal uptake by plants. Thus, the present study examined the influence of different soil fractions, spiked metal concentrations and chelate dosages on Cu accumulation by Helianthus annuus L. (common sunflower), Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek (mung bean) and Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. (pearl millet). To mimic the mill tailings of various mined-out sites in India, five soil fractions containing different proportions of garden soil and silica were prepared (S1: 100% soil; S2: 75% soil + 25% silica; S3: 50% soil + 50% silica; S4: 25% soil + 75% silica; and S5: 100% silica) and each fraction was spiked with known Cu (100, 250, 500 and 1000 mg kg −1) concentration. Upon maturity of the plant, EDTA and NTA in different dosages (0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g kg −1) were applied to each pot. Bioconcentration factor (BCF), bioaccumulation coefficient (BAC) and translocation factor (TF) were estimated for each set. The accumulation of Cu by H. annuus, V. radiata and P. glaucum indicated direct relation between soil fractions and harvesting periods. Better plant growth and Cu uptake were observed in pots with silica < 50% of fraction, whereas growth was arrested in pots with silica > 75%. The Cu accumulation varied significantly (p < 0.05) among the species, spiked metal concentration, chelate dosages and plant parts. Best accumulation was reported in pots with 50% soil and 50% silica either under 1.0 g kg −1 EDTA or 2.0 g kg −1 NTA. Irrespective of the combinations of various variables, the harvesting time affected Cu accumulation considerably. Among the species, H. annuus emerged out to be the most efficient for Cu translocation. Apparently, soil amendments facilitated enhanced uptake thereby playing an active role in improving the BAC and TF. Assisted phytoextraction is still a need until full-fledged alternatives are established in the market. The future of chelate-assisted phytoextraction seems to be limited to ex situ condition.

Aquatic ecosystems are one of the most diversified systems in the world and highly vulnerable to adverse anthropogenic influences. Ichthyofauna plays a major role in the sustenance of aquatic systems and their status, composition and diversity provides impetus for the sustainable management of the system. Of the approximately 40,000 species of vertebrates 21,723 species are fishes (Jayaram, 1999). India alone contributes 11% of the 20,000 fish species reported worldwide (Dehadrai & Poniah, 1997). Of this, 930 belong to freshwater while 1570 are marine inhabitants (Jayaram, 1999; Kar, 2005). Rajasthan, with an area of 3,42,217km 2 , ranks second in India on the basis of area and twelfth so far as annual fish catch is concerned (Johal et al., 1990; Jhingran, 1991). The state consists of five river systems, namely, Chambal, Banas, Luni, northeastern river system and Western Ghats river system. Two non-perennial rivers, the Banganga and the Gambhir, originate from Karauli hills of Sawai Madhopur and Manoharpur, respectively (Fig. 1). Banganga is a mountain torrent with a coarse textured bed and Gambhir has a fine textured one. Ali (1953) was the pioneer in emphasizing the importance of fish to the piscivorous birds about half-a-century ago. This was supported by long-term study, continued for a decade, about the ecology of Keoladeo National Park (KNP) by Vijayan (1991). Although free metal ion concentrations of Cu, Pb and Cd were probed using ion selective electrodes, they were found below the detection limits of the electrodes. Among the total dissolved metals, zinc was found to be highest, i.e. 304.85iÂg/l at najafgarh drain, while lead was seen in the lowest concentration(0.05iÂg/l) at site ramghat, the entry point of the river into New Delhi. Lead concentration ranged between 0.05 to 1.37iÂg/l. The lowest level was found at ramghat and highest level at nizamuddeen bridge and okhla barrage. As expected Zn, Fe and Mn were seen in very high concentrations compared to the other elements namely Cu, Cr, Ni and Pb. In each site, the variation among the metal concentrations was highly significant. Similarly each of these metals also differed significantly(LSD, P<0.05) among the sampling sites. At down stream sites the percentage concentrations of chelex-labile metals, particularly Fe, Mn and Cu were lower than that of the upstream sites. This is attributed to the varied nature and amount of colloidal matter in the waters at these sites. Copper in the river water differed from the other metals in its behavior towards chelex-resin, probably for its strong association with the organic films on Fe and Mn colloids.

Spatial variation in the distribution of select nutrients and alkali and alkaline earth metals in... more Spatial variation in the distribution of select nutrients and alkali and alkaline earth metals in the top soil of three hillocks(Raktakonda, Galikonda and Chittamgondi) near Visakhapatnam(Araku valley) India was explored. The study was undertaken during November 2006 to January 2007. The soil samples were collected up to a depth of 10 cm as two 5 cm slices. The soil type in the mine area was acidic with clayey loam texture. Total organic matter(TOM), total nitrogen(TN) and total available sulphur(TAS) ranged from 16.27 to 56.51 %, 3467 to 7829 mg/kg and 3.71 to 332.40 mg/kg respectively. The lowest and highest values for chloride were 153.70 and 342.87 mg/kg. The exchangeable bases were in the order of Ca>Mg>K>Na>Li. Cation exchange capacity(CEC) was in the range of 39.2 to 187.5 meq/kg. Two-way ANOVA for pH, EC, TDS, and alkali and alkaline earth metals showed significant variation(P<0.05) among sites. Except for TOM, TN, TAS, Na and Li, all other nutrients/elements varied significantly (t-Test, P<0.05) between months. Among the alkali metals, K was positively correlated with Ca and Li. K, Ca and Li were positively correlated with TAS in soil, while Na was negatively correlated. Ca was negatively correlated with TN.

Climate-induced Sea levels rise (SLR) has been one of the major concerns of the world community i... more Climate-induced Sea levels rise (SLR) has been one of the major concerns of the world community in recent decades. The present work attempts to find the current and future SLR and its inundation magnitude in the coastal districts of Odisha, India. Long-term monthly sea level data were used to assess the recent sea-level rise. The SLR projections were generated under different IPCC's Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, and RCP8.5) scenarios using the sitespecific SLR scenario generator tool 'SimCLIM'. At last, the coastal area, which would be inundated for 0.5 m and 1 m SLR, was estimated and geospatially mapped using the ArcGIS tool. The observed SLR trend along the coast is 0.19 cm/yr from 1966 to 2015, equivalent to a change of 19.50 cm/100 years. The future SLR would be in the range of 4.15 to 9.09 cm for 2040, 13.71 to 37.73 cm for 2070, and 20.20 to 76.74 cm for 2100. Approximately 992.7 km 2 area would be inundated due to 0.5 m SLR and 1720.1 km 2 for 1 m SLR. This visible stress will pose a severe threat to the coastal natural resource base of Odisha.
