Born Free 1960 Best Seller  This is Joy Adamson's memoir about her travels to Africa and her adventures as the surrogate mother of Elsa, a lioness cup who was orphaned. This book has long been targeted at younger readers in order to raise their environmental awareness. A film adaptation of the memoir was released in 1966 starring Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers. Bantam/Vintage edition, first published in 1974, of the 1960 classic, "Born Free" by Joy Adamson. The story of Joy and Elsa the African Lion represented an idyllic view of man and beast, and ranks up there with other cross-species stories of the 1960s--Flipper (dolphin) and Gentle Ben (Black Bear). The book was made into a movie and I can still hear the title song in my head. I read this edition (but this is a recent thrift store find), although I recall my parents reading earlier editions…

I was thrilled when McGoo handed us a copy of the Born Free 4 DVD to check out. If you were lucky enough to experienced Born Free 4, the general census was " this is too overwhelming".
