We often attribute descriptions to their behavior, deeming them surprised, afraid, delighted, or disappointed based on what we assume to be their hopes and expectations about the world. We often even apply character traits to our descriptions of them, such as sneaky, sassy or impatient, which seems to presuppose their possession of beliefs and desires. We attribute terms from folk psychology to describe the cognitive lives of both infants and animals, but are we justified in doing this, or is this merely a convenient, yet misleading interpretation?

Rousseau emphasizes the importance of this general will throughout his philosophies, as he believes it to be the will of a political organism, which he sees as an entity with a life of its own. He makes it seem as though a political state can be compared to a body. Just as a body is unified, though it has various parts that have particular functions, a political state also has a will which looks to its general well-being.

Both men and women receive many messages-both blatant and covert-that men are more important than women. This fundamental inequality creates a rationale for humiliation, intimidation, control, abuse, and even murder, and in this context, it becomes easier for a man to believe that he has the right to be in charge and to control a woman, even if it requires violence. Economic situations, racism, sexism, and overall discrimination towards women lead them to encounter dangerous conditions of domestic abuse, sex work, and ultimately, sexual assault and violence, and as Canadian citizens, we rely on our
