It was found that chitosan treated samples exhibited highest percent dye absorption (50.25%), colour strength (10.51) and wash fastness grades was found same (4) for all biopolymer treated dyed fabric. Among these biopolymers the chitosan showed the highest dye absorption, colour strength and wash fastness rating with natural dye. Thus we can efficiently use the chitosan as a mordant to replace the synthetic harmful mordant with biopolymer in environmental friendly manner, to reduce pollution load on environment and save resources.

The main advantages of woven composites are their cost efficiency and high process ability, particularly in lay-up manufacturing of large-scale structures. Textile reinforced composites based on natural fibers have been studied by many research groups in recent years due to their good mechanical performances, easy to handle, excellent integrity. Natural fiber composites help in preserving the fast depleting non renewable resources (petroleum feed stocks), which are the main source for practically every material used in present applications. Thus, the Natural fiber composites have come to bridge this gap and take materials closer to Green Composites (GC) for the future in view of their complete or partial bio degradable nature. Natural fibres are rich in cellulose and they are cheap and available in abundant for polymer reinforcement and it is also a potential alternative to the fibers of glass, carbon and other synthetics materials used for the manufacturing of composites. For reinforcement of natural fibre in composites, several problems occur along the interface due to the presence of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on the fibre surface. This hydrophilic nature hinders effective reaction with the matrix. In addition to this, pectin and waxy substance covers the reactive functional groups of the fibre and act as a barrier to interlocking with the matrix. To optimize effective interfacial bonding between fibre and matrix, the fibre surface needs to be modified with different chemical treatment, reactive additives and coupling agents. Chemical treatments expose more reactive groups on the fibre surface and thus facilitate efficient coupling with the matrix. As a result, better mechanical and thermal properties of the composites can be achieved.

Coloring agents of these plants are derived from roots, leaves, barks, trunks or fruits. All colors of rainbow are obtained from plants. Natural dyes have better bio degradability and generally have higher compatibility with the environment. They are non toxic, non-allergic to skin, non-carcinogenic, easily available and renewable. Color fastness is the resistance of a material to change any of its color characteristics or extent of transfer of its colorants to adjacent white materials in touch. Generally light fastness, wash fastness and rub fastness are considered for textile fibers. The outer skin of onion contains different phytochemicals which are responsible for giving colour, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties to the fabric. In this study, natural colourants were extracted using different solvents. The dye potential of the colourants obtained from the onion skin dye was evaluated by colouring cotton fabric. Bio mordanting of cotton fabric was done by using biopolymer before dyeing to improve the dyeabilty of cotton fabric with natural dye. L*, a*, b*, C*and H* values and k/s value was studied. Study about the different fastness tests were undertaken by using standard test methods. The chitosan mordanted cotton fabric showed higher k/s value. Good light fastness, wash fastness, rubbing fastness and perspiration fastness. From an ecological point of view, dyeing of cotton fabric with natural dye with bio mordanting may better alternative to conventional mordanting with chemicals.

Natural dyes are environment friendly, low toxic and less allergenic owing to the existence of large number of structurally diverse active compounds which makes natural colourants promising options for the development of antimicrobial and ultra-violet (UV) protective textiles. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of biopolymer and dyeing treatment with natural dye on the functional properties (antibacterial and UV protection) of cotton fabric and the assessment was done using standard test method. It was found that the chitosan treated onion skin dyed cotton fabric showed 97.20 percent and 98.03 % reduction in the growth of E. coli and S. aureus bacteria respectively. The chitosan treated dyed cotton fabric showed the higher ultra-violet protection factor (UPF) value (84.80) as compared to alum treated dyed cotton fabric (66.70) depicting that the chitosan treated dyed cotton fabric provided more ultraviolet protection than the alum treated dyed fabric.
