Just Crossing the Road

No it's not Chicken Little...

and it's not Turkey Lurkey...

it's not Henney Penney...

nor is it the Roadrunner!

It's a little Bob-White Quail crossing the road
by our house
and hiding in the bushes
in the neighbors yard!!!

We have not seen a quail in our neighborhood
before Sunday afternoon.
The G-man spotted him as he drove toward home.
Luckily the little guy stuck around
until I got the camera & we located him.

The G-man says quail used to be in these parts
until Fire Ants moved in the area.
Fire Ants will kill the babies...
That includes baby deer
and any small animal or bird on the ground.

It is fabulous to have this little guy here
and I hope it has a family!

How cool! It's a quail! I took a picture of a bird in the same brown grass at the edge of the Back Cove of Casco Bay in Portland, Maine, last spring, and no one knew what it was. It's a quail!

Ants eat the baby quail? Gads. I do hope this guy is a family man. You're right...it's fabulous!

Hey Jo... glad I could help you identify your quail! I was so surprised to see this little guy in our neighborhood... it's wooded here, but still it was quite a surprise.

I see wold turkeys around here along Lake Ontario woods. But those fire ants: None here, thankfully. Every time I visit home in Texas I spend part of a day powdering the fire ant mounds around my parents place. It's just a chronically losing battle.

I had to look up Quail. It is Wachtel in German. I only know they are supposed to tast good, but I`ve never seen one in true life. This one is blending so well with its surrounding colors, I had to look hard in the last picture. Such a pretty one. And ugh, those fire ants!!

Rick, happy to know the fire ants aren't in your part of the world; probably toooo cold for them to survive. They are truly terrible.

Angela, I had to remove the shadow from the photo of the quail in the brush... they really do blend in!
