And if a child retains their spinal gallant reflex, it can be incredibly uncomfortable. Whether it’s the fabric of their shirt, their tags, or they’re constantly fidgeting, these can be signs of a retained primitive reflex that needs integrating. That’s why when a child comes to me with these complaints, one of the first things I think to do is test to see if they’ve retained the spinal gallant reflex. If after testing (as shown in the video) my patient responds with a positive test, I work on integrating this reflex using the “snow angel” exercise. Noticing your child struggling with focus in school or appearing uncoordinated while running? It’s time to explore the ATNR (Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex) and its impact. 🔍 What Is the ATNR Reflex? A primitive reflex where turning the head causes arm and leg extension on the face side and flexion. It aids in the birthing process and should be integrated as the child grows. 🧐 Easy Test for ATNR: All Fours Position: Have your child on hands and knees. Gentle Head Turn: Guide their head side to side, keeping it level. Elbow Check: Look for any buckling in the elbows. 🚦 Active Reflex? Try Lizard Crawls: Start on the Tummy: Get them lying flat. Ideally, as our brain learns how to do the task the primitive reflex was assisting in the reflex should ‘’switch off’’. Some Children, for a number of reasons, don’t fully turn off the primitive reflex. Imagine 2 people trying to drive the same car, chaotic and inefficient. The ATNR reflex occurs when a baby’s head is turned to the side and causes the arm and leg on that side to straighten while the opposite arm and leg bend. Signs of reflex retention include; balance issues, poor eye tracking, head tilt when writing, poor hand eye coordination, poor attention. BRAIN & BODY HEALTH on Instagram: "Patty Cake for ATNR Reflex Integration! 🎉👐

The ATNR reflex is super helpful for babies learning to crawl, but if it sticks around too long, it might muddle up coordination and attention in older kids.

Why Patty Cake? Patty Cake is a fun game to play if your kid has retained the ATNR reflex. It encourages them to cross the midline of their body, boosting brain communication and coordination as well as engaging the cerebellum

👫 Ready, Set, Patty-Cake! Grab a partner and get those hands clapping.
