Spring is here in Delhi! One of the surest signs is the erupting of the Semal (Silk Cotton tree Bombax ceiba) into flowers. Bereft of leaves, the flowering Semul plays host to a large variety of birds, bees and flies who congregate to enjoy the nectar. Though this tree in my neighbourhood was in bloom for more than a week, it took Diana (www.flickr.com/photos/by_lady_di/ )to remind me to go out and photograph it!

Bombax ceiba (The silk cotton tree): A tall, thorny, shade tree except during flowering time (January-February) when the tree shades all the leaves & large bright crimson or red flowers are borne in clusters on the branches. To add to the beauty many birds visit the tree during the flowering season for the nectar.
