The Coronation of the Virgin (1641-1644) was painted by the Spanish Baroque artist Diego Velázquez (1599-1660).

Many consider Velázquez among the best painters of the Baroque period (or ever), and he almost never painted religious works. But this work is an exception. It shows how God and Jesus are crowning Mary as the Queen of Heaven.

Velázquez chose a simple composition for this work, an inverted triangle, though some see it more as the shape of a heart. In between Jesus and God is a white dove, representing the Holy Spirit.
