I love teaching fractions to my elementary students! There are so many ways to do hands-on learning if you have the right tools! I recommend using a variety of fraction models, but my favorite tools are fraction strips, real world fraction pictures, and food. Keep reading to see how I use them with my 3rd graders!

This activity is great for students who are learning about fractions. They can have fun figuring out their names in fractions by finding the fraction of vowels in their name, the fractions of consonants in their name, and more which also provides practice with grammar. Children can have fun coloring their name and fraction parts as well! It is so important to give students many opportunities to practice with fractions before they begin to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them.

Comparing fractions using benchmark fractions is a great strategy for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to use. I'm sharing my favorite activities and tips for teaching a benchmark fractions lesson in math workshop!
