Please, welcome our team mate Elena, who runs Roltinica shop on Etsy.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Elena and I live in the beautiful city of Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia. I'm a felt maker and I make my felt flowers using a wet felting technique.
How long have you been creating? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?
I began making felt jewelry about 2 years ago. My daughter Tatyana was browsing the Internet and suddenly found a felted purse tutorial. She thought it would be nice to learn how to make things like this, so we shopped for wool and I made a felted purse out of it. My daughter’s joy knew no bounds! That was the moment when I actually realized that I fell in love with felt.
Felting is very popular in Russia and you can also find many books and tutorials on different felting techniques. I love flowers so flowers have become my favorite subject for felting. I read a lot, studied the techniques and was experimenting with felt every single day. I tried to make smooth petals out of fluffy wool and the result was I found my own way to work with felt. I was so excited to see what else I could do.
In your opinion, why is felted accessories are so popular these days?
I think, the felted accents are a lovely way to complement modern clothing. Decorate your handbag, hair or clothes with a felted flower and you will be noticed! Nature creates beautiful flowers but they have a short life. A felted flower will never wilt!
Do you take custom orders?
Yes, I do take custom orders. Sometimes it is challenging because from time to time my customers are asking me to create a flower I have never seen because they don't grow here in Russia. So I am making my flower from a photograph and I am so happy when it becomes a realistic-looking one! I am getting great feedback on my work from my satisfied customers.
Which one of your orders was the most extraordinary?
One of the most unusual orders was two blue roses for a bride's dress. I made these with a great pleasure.
What is your family’s attitude to your creativity?
My family supports and inspires me in everything and I’m very thankful for that. My mom is my most authoritative critic – if she does not like the flower, I will remake it.
Do you have a Favorite quote you'd like to share with us?
If you want to be happy – be happy! (Kuzma Prutkov)

My husband and I lived in Crimea, Ukraine, Hungary, Namibia, and Uganda plus visited Germany, South Africa and Botswana with missionary work. 9 years ago we came back to Hungary and about year and a half has passed since we settled here in Budapest.
What do you like about where you live now?
Budapest is a beautiful city, very green and artistic. We live in the suburb part of town in a house with garden but just 30 min away from the city center, so I get the best of both city and country life at the same time!
Do you work outside of the home?
No, I am a stay at home mom, my four kids are 12, 10, 6 and 4 years old and I devote my time to them.
No, I am a stay at home mom, my four kids are 12, 10, 6 and 4 years old and I devote my time to them.
What inspires you?
Felting is a very special form of craft to me, similar to painting or sculpting. You start with shapeless wool and transform it into whatever you wish. That in itself is an inspiration to me. I like working with natural things and ancient methods as it somehow brings me feeling of completeness.
How did you begin with your art?
I started felting as a hobby and a way to make things for my family. Since childhood I was inclined to arts and crafts and have done a lot of them through my life like being a balloon artist for example. I can also draw, paint and crochet. My husband and I lived in different countries as missionaries and I always found it handy to be able to come up with needed projects – from making balloons and being a clown to sewing a puppet theater. So it was always in my blood and finding myself less busy recently I needed a challenge and wanted to learn something new so I found felting!
I make about anything and everything there is to make from wool, experimenting with textures, different types of wool and other natural fibers. Come over to my shop and see!

Interview with a star - Irina (Chopard)
Please, welcome our team member Irina who runs Chopard shop on Etsy with great felted items.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hello, My name is Irina and I live in a beautiful place near Baltic sea, in Riga, Latvia, with my daughter and my husband. I am an economist and I work as an accountant in many companies. But I am lucky, since I work part-time, so I can work from home and have time for my hobby.
How long have you been creating? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?
I have started when I was 7 years old. I knitted my first dress then and my grandma embroidered it. I have been knitting for a long time, and there are knit dresses, hats, sweaters and other items in my collection. But 2 years ago I started looking for something new to do and found some information about felting. It sounded very interesting and I decided to try. My relatives told me that I was crazy.
My felting collection started with a scarf. It looked like a thick carpet on my neck :) But now I am much more skillful and in my shop you can find scarves made in the cobweb technique. Cobweb felt is deliciously fine and airy and has a beautiful glossy appearance when made with silk fibers.
What items do you carry in your shop?
In my shop you can find a lot of different items. There are dresses in nuno-felting technique. This dress collection took part in 3 fashion shows – the first one was in Lithuania, and the other two in Latvia. You can find different ladies hats, bags, scarves and wraps, even slippers. By the way, the thickness and strength of the wool being felted keeps your feet cozy and warm during the cold season. The natural fiber will also wick moisture away keeping your feet cool and dry in warmer weather. These slippers are perfect all year round.
What inspires you?
Nature, everyday life and happy clients inspire me to create new exclusive works.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes, I think it is the best reason to make something interesting and original. You can be sure that your item will be one of a kind, and that you won’t ever see another one just like that! But until now I had only one serious custom order – it was an evening dress. I made it in Riga, but my customer was from Moscow and we contacted each other only by e-mail. My client wanted an exclusive dress for a wedding of her best friend. She was very happy when she received the dress!!!
What items in your shop do you most enjoy making and why?
Most of all I like to make hats
A stylish hat plays just as an important of a role in woman's wardrobe as do clothes and shoes. For centuries a pretty hat was a requirement for fashionistas all over the world. A great hat will certainly make your look unique and unforgettable.
What would you say makes your shop unique?
Most of items you can find in my shop are one-of-a-kind. I could not copy them even if I wanted to. Every item is unique starting with its statement, the story it tells and the mood it conveys.
Any sales or promotions?
Currently I am running a sale on this interesting blue bag
Name 3 things you can’t live without?
Family, coffee and felt!!!
What would you say to your clients?
Dear ladies, don't be afraid to look original, different and exclusive!

Interview with a Star - Evgenia (JaneBoFelt)
Please, welcome our team member Evgenia who runs JaneBoFelt shop on Etsy.
- Please tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m was born and raised in the small town Pavlovskiy Posad, just outside the Moscow. This city is famous for its beautiful colorful wool shawls. Right now I live in Moscow with my family, my husband and our two kids.
- How long have you been creating? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?
I’m creating since I can remember myself. My grandmother and mother taught me how to knit and crochet when I was a child. I tried macramé, embroidery, origami, sewing etc. I knitted sweaters, scarves and hats for myself. Several years ago I found out about felting and could not stop thinking of it! So I decided to give it a try. I purchased some wool and began to felt. I love it so much, I can't stop doing it!
- Why did you decide on JaneBoFelt name for your business?
Felting became my hobby and my passion. So I decided to try to make it also my work.
- What items in your shop do you most enjoy making and why?
Most of all I like to make scarves. I think of scarf not only as an accessory to warm your neck up but also as a piece of art, a picture. Even know that you will not see the worn scarf completely since it is tied around the neck I like to make it beautiful, from one end to another.
- What would you say makes your shop unique?
Most of my items are one-of-a-kind. I could not copy them even if I wanted to. It’s not just me who is making felted items. It’s my mood, my imagination, my thoughts and something else involved.
- Do you have a favorite item you have made?
Yes, this scarf:
...and this baby hat with flowers:
- Do you use any special techniques or tools?
Most of all I like nuno-felting. Wool and fabric are mixing during felting process and become unweaven fabric with great texture. I do not use any electric devices, just water and soap like ancient people did.
- What do you sell and what is so special about your works?
There are different items in my shop: scarves, hats, mittens, brooches and bags. All of them are made by me using my own designs. Also I like custom orders. It is always a challenge to make something special for somebody according to his or her taste and style.
- Name 3 things you can’t live without?
Coffee, wool and my laptop:)

Interview with a Star - Evgeniya (DemyBlackDesign)
Hello I’m Evgeniya and I’m the person behind DemyBlackDesign. I have lived in Moscow, Russia all my life.
- How long have you been creating? How did your journey in art and creativity begin?
I used to work as an HR manager and really loved and still love my profession. I was proud of myself as I achieved a pretty high position at my last place of employment, but….. things are changing….. and one day I decided to try something new or maybe I should say almost forgotten old skills. I used to go to workshop and do things in batik technique and I decided to start creating things in this style again. And here we are …with my first handpainted pareo, maybe not quite technically perfect but unique and I’ve made it by myself!
So the pareo was the first thing I’ve created and I decided to continue and made few silk scarfs (you can see them in my shop on Etsy). But I wanted to do more! I have always wanted to try to create some beautiful and unique jewelry. A friend of mine makes some jewelry as well and she was the person who told me about Etsy. Once I opened this amazing site I wasn’t able to close it! I’ve been inspired by all those wonderful and original items so I made some sketches, ordered supplies and that as they say was that! And you know the more you create the more ideas you have!
Besides batik silk scarves and jewelry I’ve also tried another technique – nuno felting. I’ve started to do it after I’ve made a felted beret for myself. I love scarves and this technique allows to make warm and at the same time very light scarves as you use natural silk.
- How would you describe your style? Have any other artists etc influenced your style?
I love simple, elegant and original things and pretty sure that all my designs reflect this style. You can wear my design everyday or for special moments. My moto is Be yourself! You can afford to be original! And I admire such designers like Vivienne Westwood – such an amazing example about how original style can be more than just popular!
- Why did you decide on DemyBlackDesign for your business?
Pretty short story )))) That’s just a login and password from one of my old jobs. Demy is short version of my surname and Black – is a reflect of movie ‘Meet Joe Black” And after some time I’ve started to use this name as a name for one forum and some friends of mine started to call me Demy! So when I was choosing the name for my shop it was pretty easy
- What would you say makes your shop unique?
You can find different things for 4 seasons in my shop – hand painted silk scarves that you can wear at the office or outside in spring and summer, nuno felted scarves that will keep your warm during autumn and winter and jewelry you can wear everyday!
- What are your main sources of inspiration?
That’s nature for my scarves and different fashion shows as you can see something interesting and that’s inspiring you to create something new.
- Where would you like to go with your business?
My goal is don’t have an office job and work only on my designs. Right now my sales a bit slowly but I believe that I’m on a right way and I just have to work harder as I have a lot of ideas and I know people like my designs. I’m pretty sure that handmade things are more unique as they made with love and some of them is impossible to copy as no one is able to make two the same nuno felted scarves.
- Do you have a favorite item you have made?
Right now that’s earrings with red murano beads I’ve made for myself and also my new earrings with Japanese seed beads. I’ve been inspired by amazing nature of Cape Verde – a perfect place for surfing and this earrings reflect waves, clouds and sunsets. They are perfect for summer time!
- Name 3 things you can’t live without?
Family and friends, rock music and holiday on a sea shore.

Tutorial how to color dye felting wool with KoolAid
A great way to color or dye felting wool is with KoolAid. It comes in a wide variety of colors that could be mixed up to create even more colors. It doesn’t wash away and is as natural as a food coloring could be. Another great thing about KoolAid is that it can be found in any grocery store in US.
I suggest we start with a few bright colors like red for cherry flavored KoolAid, yellow for Lemon and orange for Orange and a few felted beads of medium size. To read more about the process of creating felted wool acorns please refer to my post on How to make felted wool acorns.
I first made colored water. To make it I added powder from KoolAid packs to the water in a few small plastic containers. As a result I’ve got five containers with brightly colored water. I added approximately a tea spoon of powder to each of the containers. Then I put each of my five beads into a separate container and let the beads suck in the colored water.
One can vary the quantity of powder dispensed in the water to make the solution more or less saturated. As a result beads can turn out of either pale and pastel hues or bright and vivid colors. It makes sense to heat containers with solution and beads in a microwave up to the boiling point for color to fully penetrate the beads. However be careful as beads will be super hot! I usually cool them off in cold water afterwards.
The result is pretty impressive. All of my five beads turned out to be colored differently. The most intensive, bright and beautiful color turned out to be orange. Yellow bead was not that intensely colored but I really like the light lemon color of the bead. They smell of oranges, lemons and cherries! Yummy!
All those brightly colored beads could be turned into acorns or into an acorn wind chime.
This post describes my personal experience with a particular product.
Please be careful trying to replicate the experiment!!!
