• Pyramid beach is crowded, but Silver beach is more
crowded than Pyramid beach. Highlights

Here are some basic rules for spelling comparatives:

Rule 1 - One syllable - Adjectives or Adverbs: Simply add –er

Examples: smart = smarter young = younger
fast = faster

If the adjective has a CVC pattern, double the consonant and

add -er.
Examples: wet = wetter big = bigger sad = sadder

Rule 2 – Two syllable - Adjectives ending in Y: Change the Y to I and add -er

Examples: pretty = prettier happy = happier busy = busier

Rule 3 - Adjectives or adverbs with two or more syllables (not ending in Y) Use MORE

Examples: famous = more famous interesting = more interesting

carefully = more carefully

Rule 4 These are the irregular words.

There is no system or pattern here, so you'll just have to remember them. Fortunately,
there are only a few...

Examples: good = better bad = worse far = farther (further)

well = better badly = worse little = less

V. READING.

Belize borders on Mexico and Guatemala. It has a land area of about 23,050 square
kilometers, including several small islands. Today called Belize, it was formerly known as
British Honduras. It is 280 kilometers long and 110 kilometers wide, and forests occupy
approximately 65% of the area. Much of the land is flat, but there are some mountains. The
highest point is Victoria peak, at 1,123 meters. The population of Belize is about 180,000,
with 90% of adults being literate. English is the official language.
Honduras is bordered by Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador, and has an area of 112,088
square kilometers (a little less than England). The Pacific coastal strip is only 124 kilometers
long, while on the Caribbean, the northern coast is 640 kilometers long, much of the country
is mountainous, rising to peaks like “Cerro de las Minas” at 2,849 meters. Roughly 46% of
the land is agricultural; about 33% is forested.
Spanish, which most of the people speak, is the official language in Honduras. The population
is about five million, of which about 90% is “mestizo”. About 40% of the population is
illiterate, even though education is compulsory in this central American country.
