DESCRIPTION. ~* Working Princip: - The pulp to be pressed is fed into the inlet chute at the end of the press, where it reaches the active pressing device consisting of two slowly rotating screws. The pulp fills the free space between the screw flights, ‘ and the dewatering is achieved in the following way. By rotation of the ™ screws ‘the pulp is conveyed into the closely fitted strainer housing and 7 simultaneously submitted to a steadily increasing pressure, which causes the liquid to drain off through the perforated strainer plates, ‘The pressure is produced by the Screws, which are designed so that the channel, i.e. the space between the flights, through which the pulp is forced, steadily narrows from intake to outlet end, When the - pressing process is concluded, the material leaves the press through the outlet chute. - The strainer housing, i.e. the press cage, comprises the internal strainer plates, the backing plates and the relevant clamping structure, Underneath the cage a large tray is inserted which collects the press = liquid, and allows it to drain through an outlet at the bottom. Due to the intermeshing of the flights of the two counteracting screwe, the material is prevented from sticking to the screws and rotating - with them. Cover Guards. - The press is enclosed by cover guards, two of which protect the driving wheels, and one covers the press cage. The latter is split longitudinally and transversally. Small removable covers are fitted both sides for . the inspection of the press cage. © atFosg"tho pk Press Cage. For easy disniantling and access to the press screws, the cage {6 split Jongitudinally and consists of an ‘uppor part! which'can be lifted off, and- -8 lower part! fixed to the frame. The cage parts are clamped together by means of forked sling clamps on the bridges and fixing screws near the inlet end, See Fig. 41-30295, The figure shows that the cage is composed of the-following parts: Around the press screw are fine= perforated strainor plates which are rivited to the heavy external backing Plates: These are_kept in position by strongly built "bridges! arranged and longitudinal ‘side bars* and-‘center barg'.*To enéure utmost rigidity, “stay bolts and spacing pipes are inserted between the bridges, and on the top a heavy beam is provided for lifting purposes. Arched distance pieces are introduced between the backing plates. ‘The upper part of the cage is accurately positioned on the lower part by the side bars, which are guided by the lower bridges. ‘The clearance between top of screw flights and strainer plates is 0,5 - 1.2 mm (1/64 ~ 8/64 inch). ‘The diameters of the press screws and of the cage are greater near the inlet end, Instead of backing plates light frames are here used to support the Strainer plates. Inlet Chute, Outlet Chute. ‘The inlet chute has perforated side walls and ie fixed with screws to the side bars of the lower cage. A shield ring is fitted on each of the press screw journals where they enter the front wall. A window in the wall Permits the inspection of the material and the charging of the press. The outlet chute is screwed to the last bridge and the adjacent bearing, and flanged on both sides to the press frame. Press Screws, ‘The two press screws are built up of a hollow trunk and flights that follow 4 continuous helical curve all along the trunk. During operation the serews rotate in opposite directions and have therefore right hand and left hand . flights. respectively, At the inlet end the trunk extends into the shaft journal of the inlet end bearing, “At the other end (outlet end) it is provided with grotmd flange for bolt connecilon with the driving shaft, Main Bearings, Each of the press screws is supported on three bearing blocks, equipped with bronze linings, The inlet end bearing is of the solid typo, while the two bearings at the outlet end are split, ‘The correct position of the upper part of these bearings is ensured by means of dowelling screws inserted at the abutting faces, and fitted bolts provide the location of the blocks on the frame. To prevent any axial displacement of the screws in the opposite direction, a split steel ring is clamped to the shaft at the bearing block. Oil leakage into the outlet chute is prevented by a seal ring inserted beside the steel ring. Gear For speed reduction a gearbox is arranged at the end of the press frame, containing 3 shafts with spur gears, all lubricated from a common oil sump. The shafts are supported by heavy roller bearings. See drawing No, 233716. ‘The twin spur gears on the press screw shafts, which make the tvo screws rotate at the same speed, are lubricated from a separate oll tray. The covers guarding the spur wheels must not be removed when the press is in operation. ‘The press is arranged for V-belt drive (or chain drive) from an electric motor with variable speed, or from an ordinary motor in connection with a suitable variator,.if needed. If desired, a steam engine may - also be used. Control carefully gearbox, pinion and all gear wheels and shafts. Use White Spirit or other suitable fluid to wash off all dirt. Lubricate all shafts, bolts and movable parts under erection. In cases where'the press screws have received a corrosion protective coating of paint, control carefully that the edge of the screw flights are absolutely free from paint. Lubricate (e.g. graphite & oil) the top of the screw flights. Place the frame of the press (item 4) with the lower part of the press cage (item 11) on the supports and fasten with bolts and lock washers (items 5, 22 and 40). To ensure exact position of frame in relation to the gearbox, two fitted bolts (numbered) are supplied, and these should be tightened first. Care should be taken not to detach the bridge units fastened to the frame, as the exact alignment of the lower part of the press cage may thus become incorrect. Align carefully by means of a levelling telescope, the machined top surface of the frame, and eliminate deviations by the adjusting screws in the base plate of the gearbox and in the foot plate of the legs. After alignment, insert steel shims underneath the base plate to obtain uniform load on the foundation. Deflexion at the middle of the frame should by all means be avoided, otherwise the clearance.set between the strainer plates and the press screws may be eliminated, in most cases this will result in destruction of the straineé plaies. If the press is erected on steel foundation, the foundation bolts (item 6) can now be tightened. If the press is erected on concrete foundation with holes for the bolts, suitable soft cement must be poured into the holes under the base plates, ‘The erection oan be continued only after a drying period of minimum 3 days. Place the shafts (item 7) with double bearing blocks onto the frame, support same provisionally in sufficient height to make it possible to slide the spur wheel (item 8) onto the shaft journal. Adjust the position of the spur wheel so that: the keys (item 15) can be fitted. ‘Then fasten the lock washer to the shaft journal. Lower the shaft and bearing assembly, and fasten the bearing blocks to the frame with bolts. The numbered fitted bolts should be tightened first. 8 7. Put the oil seal ring onto the screw shaft journal, enter the bearing ‘on the end of the journal, and fit the seal ring in the bearing recess as shown in Fig 41-30467, Erect the bearing and fasten same with screw bolts. ‘The numbered fitted bolts should be tightened first. Fit the stay bolis. 9 Clean carefully by compressed air the lower part of the press cage to remove dirt and foreign matters. 10, ‘Turn the press screws (do not forget lubricant on the flight edges) and control be means of a thickness gauge that the clearance between the flights and the strainer plates in the lower part of the cage is correct all oyer the length of the screws, i.e. 0.5 -1.2mm. (1/64 ~ 3/64 inch). ld Position the 2 upper parts of the press cage and insert the distance bars (item 18), Make sure that the cage is pushed forward until it hits the distance bars. Clamp the upper part of the press cage to the lower part by means of the sling clamps (items 19, 26 and 27). Set the Unbrako screws at the inlet end of the press cage to the side bars of the lower part of the cage (item 33). 12, ° “Erect the inlet chute (item 21), and set the screws, 19," “Fit the V-belt pulley (or sprocket wheel, if used). 14. ‘Tum the input shaft on the gearbox to ascertain that the erection is in order, and that the stipulated clearance between the press screws and the cage is present. It should be easy to turn the pulley by hand. 15. Make eure that all bolts and nuts are properly tightened. 16, Erect the driving motor, and fit the pulley belts. 17, Fill ofl according to lubrication instruction, and make sure that the oil pipes are not blocked. 18, Mount the covers and make eure that all gaskets are In position, 18, Start the press for trial running by engaging the motor, and cut out immediately if anything appears to be wrong. Check and start again, ‘To remove the separate parts, a permanent travelling pulley block (3 tons) should be installed above the press, It is necessary to reserve ample space around the press fbr maintenance work and cleaning. | LUBRICATION. Roller Bearing Roller bearings are filled With gréase’at our works before despatch. ‘After-one-yoar, Tomove the cap of the bearing covers-on the gearbox. -.- Clean, off the old grease. A rag of cotton or linen may be used, but Lo ool ‘Be‘carefill that no.dirt, threads or other foreign matters are: left: in ‘the, bearing or. the housing: “If the old gréase'is dark or. 2 @iécoloired,-or-mixed with moisture, ‘the cleaning should be curried out very carefully with White Spirit. Refill with grease all free spaces between the rollers and also cover the sides of the roller bearing with grease. The seal ring in the covers and one third of the free volume in the housing should be filled with surplus grease. Sorew Shaft Bearings. When the press is running, the three screw shaft bearings are served automatically from an oil lubricator. In the 'running-in’ period the amount of oil used at each bearing, should be abundant, and later on reduced toa proper amount, i.e. 3~4 drops a minute, which can be controlled through the lubricator inspection window. For recommended oil grade see Lubrication Chart. When the lubricator and the pipes have been mounted on the machine, it ig necessary to pump some oil through the system to wash out any dirt that may have collected in the pipes, before they are connected with their lubrication points. ‘This may be done by turning the hand crank, When the press has been out of operation for a considerable time, it is advisable to give an initial lubrication by turning the hand crank before sstarting up. Cleaning of the Lubricator, _ The'lubricator should be cleaned every third year: Reinove thé tid, unscrew the set nuts’ undér the bottom, and lift the pumping mechanism out ofthe reservoir. Wash the pump units with White Spirit. Clean the inside of the reservoir in the same way, and remove all sediment, When reinserting the mechanism in the reservoir, the actuating pawl should be tied up with a string to keep it in position during replacement. See figures etc. on hibricator data leaflet. Lubrication of Spur Gears. Gearbox and twin pinion oil tray are not filled with oil before dispatch. Check that gearbox and tray, as well as the spur gears, are absolutely clean before oil is applied. ‘Fill the gearbox to the level mark on the oil gauge. ‘The pinion oil tray should be filled to apprx. 130 mm (5 inches) below the shaft, or at least have so much oi] that the lower edge of the thiust bearing disks are well immersed, i \ cont'd AUTOMATIC . Discharge Piston Action. ‘The Lubricator is powered from the machine being lubricated by meana of a crank on the drive shaft (8). A pawl and ratchet ‘arrangement (G and 7) rotates the apparatus shaft (16), the eccentric discs (17) fastened to the apparatus shaft actuating the pump pistons (18 and 18) and the stide valve (20). When tho slide valve is in top position the control piston (18) and the discharge piston (18) start their suction strokes. ‘The control piston dralvs lubricant from the reservoir through duets (a) and (b) into the control cylinder, and the dis- charge piston from’the return tube through duct (4) anda port-in the slide valve into the pressure cylinder. : At start of the pressure stroke the slide valve ia in bottom position (as shown on the drawing). The oll in the control cylinder is foreed through ducts (b) and (e) into the control tubo, and the oil in the pressure cylinder through the slide valve and duct (e) into the Iubricant leada- Rate of delivery from the Lubricator is adjusted by varying the length of the control piston stroke by means 6f the adjusting screw (15). The discharge piston, which is of the same diameter as the control piston; has always a full stroke. DISMANTLING and REASSEMBLING, Cover Guards, Before removing the cage covers, the inapection covers must be removed from the cage cover sides by turning the clamps, see Fig. 41-3022. ‘Through the openings there will be admittance to the hiside clamping sorows, which fix the cage covers to the press frame. When all fixing screws are removed, tie a sling as shown on General Arrangement, and Lit the covers by the tackle. If the press is equipped with a fixed cover at the discharge opening, this has to-be removed before the adjacent covers can be taken:off.- Access to the inside sorewe is obtained through the inspection openings. When removing the covers at the drive end, loosen all fixing screws and ~ Pay stlention te the overlapping between t8G wii Yhi0N GOYEL aid Le great spur wheel cover. The latter can not be taken off without being parted at the flanged split. Attention is called to all packings and gaskets, Clean the covers, Rinse the press cage before stripping. (This should always be done after the press has been put out of commission to prevent clogging of the holes in the cage plates). Dismantling and Remounting of Upper Part of the Press Cage ‘The press cage consists of an 'Upper Part! and a 'Lower Part’, composed a8 mentioned in the above Description and shown in Fig. 41-80295, Remove the 3 distance bars at the discharge outlet by removing the screws from the bar flanges. See Fig, 41-30468. ‘The Upper Part of the cage is split vertically in the middle, at one of the bridges. ‘To remove the two parts of the cage, swing down the forked sling clamps, and loosen the screws from the split bridge. : ‘The ‘Outlet End Part’ can now be lifted off by the tackle when slinged at the ears on the ttp bar as shown on General Arrangement, wa Instead of being fastened by sling clamps the bridges of the ‘Inlet End Part’ positioned nearest to the inlet chute, are screwed by foot flanges to the lower cage part, Before loosening these screws, clean the screw heads thoroughly. If itis desired to lift off the "Inlet End Part! of the.cage, the other part inst be looscned and moved some inches away (after removal of the sistance bars mentioned) in order to make space for Lifting off, oF - if it is prefered - the inlet chute may instead be taken off, which’also gives the necessary epace. When remounting the press cage, check that the bridges in the upper and lower part correspond accurately, and that the outlet ond of the cage lies true against the distance ars. See that the surfaces of the side bars are olean, tighten well all the clamping screws, and control that there is no clearance between the upper and lower side bars. Dismantling of Inlet Chute, When the inlet chute is to be dismantled, some free space above the chute is needed for lifting. (Minimum 400 mm ~ 16 inches). Disconnect top flange of the chute, and remove the lowor flange serews from the side bars and the end plate. Lift the chute carefully. When remounting see that the chute fits well before tightening the screws. Removal and Remounting of Backing Plates. In order to take out the plates from the cage it is necessary first to unscrew the side bars from the bridges to the plates in question. (See Fig. 41-30295). The plates are then loose and can be removed.: It is not necessary to loosen the center bar, ‘The plates in the lower part of the cage may ba removed without removing the press screws. A suilable crow bar may be useful to get hold of the backing plates and raise them, as indicated with dotted lines in Fig. 41-30296. Be careful that the point of the crow bar doce not damage the strainer plate. ‘Take care also of the arched distance pieces between the backing ‘plates. . When a frame under the feeding chute is to be taken out, the chute has to be removed and the upper cage, if not already dismantled, moved along suffisiently to free the side bars. The outer surfaces of the backing plates are machined accurately to the diameter of the corresponding bridges, and it is consequently of great importance that they are placed exactly in the original position when reassembling. Check by means of a gauge that there is no clearance between backing plates and bridges. ‘When fixing thelbide bars, make sure that the screws are absolutely tightened. Some gentle blows with a soft mallet near the screws at the same moment as the screws are tightened, may he effective. ! | \ Removal of Sirainer Puito The strainer plates are riveted to the backing plates and the edges bent as shown in'Fig. 41~30295. When a strainer plate is to be replaced; ‘thé rivets Will have to be removed with an expelling drift, (See Mig: 41-30293), Steel rivets should be centered and drilled out (grill dismeter approx; -4 millimetres) before expelling takes place, For. copper rivets this drilling procedure is not necessary. ‘When the strainer plateis removed, the backing plate ought to be cleaned with a wire brush and washed, Replacement of Strainer Plates, Spare strainer plates should always be kept in stock at the factory, On request, however, such plates are supplied at short notice, cut to accurate size and perforated as prescribed, but not rolled. The strainer plate should be pre-formed by rolling and clamped to the backing plate in a simple fixture, as shown in Fig. 41-30203, whereafter riveting lakes place. The clamping fixture is comprised of 2 semi-circle shaped pieces of wood with the same radius as the press screw~ 1 millimetre, 2 tension girths with threads and nuts, and 2 cross bars. The figure shows the assembly of the plates in the fixture. Because of the greater cage diameter at the inlet end, 3 different fixtures are needed to suit the different plates. Before riveting, check that the strainer plate is in a correct position on the backing plate. The rivet holes in the strainer plate should preferably be made by means of a drill, having a diameter a little smaller than that of the rivet, Aflar drilling, countersinking takes place ad-indicated In Pig. 41-30293. ‘The holes migat also be made by punching with a pointed Grift, By this method, however, there is a risk that the strainer Plate may rise around the hole during the riveting procedure. ‘The first rivet should be inserted in the hole nearest to the middle of the arched edge of the plates, the second rivet in the next hole, ete. (See Fig. 41-30293, ) Steel rivets should be heated. If copper rivets are used, heating is nol necessary, A suitable riveting Imob ensures a good result. When the riveting has been done, bend the protruding edges of the strainer plate over the backing plate. At the arched ends the strainer Plate should be cut between the rivets by means of a sharp chisel to facilitate bending. (See Fig. 41-30293.) At each of the four corners & small excessive piece of the plate has to be cut away. The edges Should be hammered thoroughly. Finally the surplus material of the rivet heads and the strainer plate edges must be well trimmed, Replacement of strainer plates on the frame positioned under the feeding chute, is carried out in the same way as mentioned above. 16 Dismantling. of Press Screws. When handling the press serews and other heavy parts of the press, it is of importance: that the lifting tackle is sufficiently powerful. The weight of the different parts is noted on special list provided. When inlet chute and upper parts of the press cage have been removed, :a8 described previously ;-remove the fixing serews.from-the flanges’ + of the press screw shafts.. Flanges and screw bodies have correspoiding matks to facilitate later reassembling: If these marke are illegible, they should be refreshed before dismantling is carried out. Remove all lubricating pipes at the inlet end bearing. Remove the fixing bolts from the bearing, Take care that the fitted bolts do not receive burrs or wounds, and refresh the marks if necessary. Remove the stay bolts screwed to the supporting plate, Remove the cover plate located upon the core hole at the top of the bearing. Put an jron bar into the opening across the hole, and place a cable rope from the lifting block around the bar. Lift - with care - until there is a clearance of 1,5 mm (1/16 inch) between bearing and press frame. Put a sheet of gasket or similar material (approx. 1/16 inch thick) under the press screw, between the flights and the second strainer plate (counted from the inlet end). Slack the hoist until the screws are resting on the gasket. The bearing block can now easily be removed from the journals by pulling it backwards. Attention is called to the off seals in the bearings. Loosen all screws from the end plate, which then can be taken away by easing it backwards. Loosen the shafts from the press screws by means of the dismantling screws supplied by inserting them in the threaded holes of the shaft flanges. During this operation both forcing acrews should be turned at the same rate. Take care of the dowels, which are fitted between flange and screw body. When shafts and press screws are disconnected, make sure that there is a clearance between the shaft and the press screw before lifting the latter, ~ Place a safe cable rope sling around one of the press screws at its centre of gravity and lift it gently out of the press. Lowering should be done on a prepared place. All handling of the heavy parts should be arranged safely and with great care. a7 Dismantling of Press Screw Shafts. and Gears When only the: Great Sput Wheel is to‘be dismantled, it is not necessary to disconnect press screw and shaft. Proceed as follows: Upper part of press cage, inlet chute'and end bearings are removed ag described above. Drain'the-oil from tha pinion tray,. Clean‘away all oil” * woetee shee ee Remove the counter motion ring, see Fig. 41 ~ 30465. Remove with care the seal ring. Remove all lubrication pipes from the plain bearings, and protect their ends, but do not plug, Remove the screw bolts from the bearing covers. Lift the covers by the eye bolts, and put them aside in a clean place. Lift the wheel end of the shaft as high up as needed for pulling off the wheel, and for support place heavy packings under the shafl. (Before lifting, check that the tackle is’ sufficiantly powerful). Hold the weight of the wheel by the tackle, and pull it off as shown in Fig. 41 - 30466 A, The two flat parallel keys have 5/8" UNC threads in their ends and can by means of a suitable dismantling screw be pulled out before the wheel is removed. If the Twin Pinion is to be dismantled; the shaft must be loosened from the press screw, - Lower the shaft again until it rests on the bearings, and disconnect as described previously. To ensure correct meshing of the two spur pinions, when remounted, three intermeohing teeth should be given marks, - or old illegible marks refreshed ~ before the pinions are removed. ‘Tle a cable rope to the shaft, lift off and lower it on wooden trestles. Protect the machined surfaces of the shaft from receiving burrs. Remove the thrust stoppers at the twin pinion keys by undoing the ~ screws. ‘Arrange two extracting rods as shown in Fig. 41- 30486 (B) and pull the pinion ‘off by screwing the nuts. When doing so, take care that both nuts are fumed at the same rate, ‘The thrust bearing disks are free when pinion and keys are removed, Reassembly of Pinions, Shafts and Press Screws Before reassembling the parts ~ carried out in the opposite order ~ shafts, borings, keys etc, should be carefully checked and possible burrs removed. Place the pinion in vertical position upon wooden steady supports. Arrange steel thrust disks and bronze disks as shown in Fig. 41 ~ 30265. ‘The bronze disks on the two shafts are not the same, and an interchanging sHould consequently be avoided, 18 Clamp @ retainer-on the shaft as indicated in.Fig. 41 - 30466 (C).to keep the disks clear. Put the keys in the key-ways, fit two eye-bolts of steel to the flange and lft the shaft ds shown. - Before lowering the shaft, pinion boring and seating on the shaft should be lubricated with machiné ofl mixed with white lead to prevent jamming, .Check that the pinion enters correctly onio the keys. If necessary give the ‘ehaft sonie-gentle:blows on-the top-with a soft mallet. : JFix the thrust stoppers, and move the piiito back until it ‘against the st-rpers. ies true The Great Spur Wheel is fitted on the shaft in the same way as the Pinion. See Fig. 41 - 30486 (D) or by means of a sufficiently long atud bolt fitted in the center threads (1" UNC) of the shaft end and equipped with a cross bar and a nut, Before lowering the pross screws in the cage, place the same sheet of gasket as used under demounting of the end bearing, on the rigid cage plates just ahead of the inlet chute. Place the screw shafts on the split bearings. - ‘To obtain a correct mating of shafts and press serews, make sure 1) by checking the marked teeth that the two pinions are meshing exactly as before dismantled, and 2) that marks on shaft flanges and on serew bodies correspond. When this is correctly carried out, the flight of the one press screw will mesh midway between the vo corresponding flights of the other. Position the dowel pins between flange and screw body before the fixing screws are tightened. Fasten the cage end plate, and slide the end bearing on the shaft journals, taking care that the shaft seals are not damaged. Position the upper part of the split bearings, and fasten all bearing bolts. ‘ Fixe the ‘stay bolts in the end bearings to the end bridge; Fasten the lubricator pipes: When irisertirigthe oil seal ring, it should be fitted with the aplit at ~ tHe highest point-of the shaft and’the sealing lip facing the bearing: lining, Make sure that it is not being distorted. Give the press screws a few revolutions by turning the pulley shaft for hand, and see that everything is correctly fitted, Check that there is no clearance between twin pinion, thrust disks and bearing block, and apply the split counter motion thrust ring so that there is an air gap to the seal ring of max, 0,8 mm (2/10 inch.)
