Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie was the fruit of the marriage between Frederick Alvah Miller, a stockbroker U.S.
and Clarissa Margaret Boehmer, daughter of a British Navy captain. He was the youngest of three
brothers. His father died when she was eleven and his mother taught him at home, encouraging her
to write from very young. At age 16, he attended the school of Mrs. Dryden, in Paris, studying,
singing, dancing and piano.
He married his first wife in 1916 to Archibald Christie, which was divorced in 1928, but after this
marriage was known worldwide as the writer of novels and short stories and detective police with
the name of Agatha Christie. In his several marriages, had occasion to travel around the world and
use them as scenes of his writings.
In 1961 he was appointed a member of the Royal Society of Literature and made honorary
doctorate in Literature from the University of Exeter.
In 1971 he was awarded the title of Dame of the British Empire (Dame), a title of nobility in those
days was granted infrequently.
Agatha Christie died of natural causes on January 12, 1976, at the age of 85, in Winterbrook
House, Cholsey, near Wallingford, Oxfordshire. She is buried in the churchyard of St. Mary, in
Cholsey.
Works:
His works are characterized by unexpected outcomes. There are characters of his creation that
have been well known to his readers and followers: Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
Among his most popular titles include Murder on the Orient Express (1934), Death on the Nile
(1937) and Ten Little Indians (1939), but his best work is perhaps one of the first, The Murder of
Roger Ackroyd (1926) . In his latest novel, Curtain (1974), the character's death Hercule Poirot
concludes a career of almost sixty fictitious.
When not writing detective, Agatha Christie wrote six romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary
Westmacott, some plays and a book of poems.
