Crochet union jack

This pattern is written in American Standard crochet terms. Each flag measures approximately 13 cm tall and 13 cm wide. I made 5 flags which measured appropriately 115cm long when finished, but you can make as many as needed. The flag uses single crochet (UK double crochet) throughout, and there are no nasty mid row colour changes so it's an ideal easy pattern for beginners.

I wanted a Union Jack pincushion but didn't have a chart so I decided to make my own - here is the result. I first stitched it on 14 count Aida using Designs for the Needle Thread and for the pincushion I used 10 count canvas with some Anchor tapisserie wool from my stash. I am very pleased with the result and thought I would share the chart. In the run-up to the World Cup and to Wimbledon, I thought I'd get a bit patriotic and use up some old red, white and blue yarn that's been knocking about. The plan was to try out some new granny squares to make a St George's Cross on one side and then somehow design a Union Jack pattern for the other side. I really thought that I'd get enough viewing time out of England's World Cup squad and Andy Murray to be able to complete it. Hmmmm .... that didn't go quite to plan, did it?

This post came about for a number of reasons: 1. I like a challenge and wanted to try and knit a union jack 2. Making a purse has been on my to do list for a while 3. I finish the pillow! It turned out even better than I thought and it wasn't nearly as difficult as I anticipated it might be.
