Regions discussion (2024)

[edit]

The previous regions discussion for Peru (#Regions) didn't seem to go very far. User:AnniAriel has proposed an alternative, based on physiographic regions. Which map makes most sense for travellers? Ground Zero (talk) 13:41, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

The descriptions of the natural regions can be found here. @SHB2000, Ikan Kekek: Ground Zero (talk) 13:59, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Just in case and if it might help: Pulgar Vidal, Javier (1987). Geografía del Perú [Geography of Peru (9th ed.)] (in Spanish). PEISA. ISBN 84-599-6883-9. AnniAriel (talk) 13:45, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Current map of 10 regions
Peruvian natural regions -- 9 regions
Thanks for providing the maps. I don't know enough about Peru to have an opinion on this question, but I'd ask you a question: Are natural divisions always the most useful ones for travelers, or might political or demographic (ethnic, urban/rural) divisions be more useful sometimes? Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:39, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be very difficult to plan a trip using these regions. The current regions organize our city and town articles in a way that travellers can plan to travel from the yo another. In the promised regions, Suni region, in particular, is spread out across the country. It likely does not have any cities or towns for which we have articles. Ground Zero (talk) 17:34, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
If that's the problem, I can start them. Just give me a little bit of time. AnniAriel (talk) 02:06, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
However, it's important that travellers know about them because of weather, roads, and cities characteristics in each one of them. Could it be possible to add this region information like a plus instead of erasing it?. AnniAriel (talk) 01:59, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Weather, roads and so forth can be covered in city and existing region articles. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:13, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
To me, Sr. Pulgar Vidal's natural regions belong in the Wikipedia article. I don't think that they are useful for travellers. Ground Zero (talk) 02:21, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
And, in fact, they are in w:Geography of Peru. Ground Zero (talk) 02:23, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
True, however if travelers know the specifics details of each region, they are somehow able to optimize their itineraries and prepare adequately, regarding clothes, transport, housing among others. They can also know about the different activities presented in each one of the regions in general. I get when you said some of this information can be covered in cities articles - however, some of these articles are very poor on information, and some other, didn't exist at all. Same thing with the region articles. AnniAriel (talk) 02:28, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Lack of information can be remedied by adding it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:37, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think I prefer the current regions simply due to the complexity of the proposed natural regions. Having that many enclaves and exclaves in our region structure isn't a good idea. SHB2000 (t | c | m) 11:26, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@AnniAriel: I have added information to the region articles that I have collected from other language versions of Wikivoyage and from Wikipedia. Can you add other information to make these articles better? Ground Zero (talk) 11:00, 25 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Especially as the physiographic regions span several of our regions, I think it would be good to have some of the information on them in a subsection Climate (in Understand) of the country article. At present, that section is missing. –LPfi (talk) 05:35, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have added a high-level summary adapted from Wikipedia. I think that any more detail should go into the region articles. Ground Zero (talk) 10:34, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. –LPfi (talk) 05:12, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
So the main article will not have the Geography section, I understand, even though other countries do have it. Is there any article on Peruvian Geography? I want to add a list of the national parks or natural reserves we have here. I was planning to do it in the Peru article, but I don't want anyone to erase the information because it's not the right place or one person believes it's not essential data for travelers, even though there are other articles with the same information here. Additionally, it's not easy to write an article for the wiki (considering time, sources, style, etc.). Let me know. Thanks. AnniAriel (talk) 16:41, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Information about national parks could only be summarized in an article for an entire country. If a park merits its own article and doesn't have one, please start one and use the Wikivoyage:Park article template. If you'd like to create an overall article about the national parks and reserves in Peru, that could also be a fine idea. There are various preexisting "National parks of (name of country)" articles. If any still have too many images and unnecessary blank space, don't emulate that but instead have a look at Wikivoyage:Image policy#Minimal use of images, but otherwise, please plunge forward with my blessing if you've got good information to share.
I didn't forget your question about geography. I'm struggling to see how an entire article about Peruvian geography would be a travel article. I think a brief subsection on geography in this article would be fine, as long as it's easy for anyone to understand and doesn't contain any jargon, or it could also be covered along with climate and/or regions. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:20, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your kind response. My idea was not to include a lot of information about geography, but to add a bit more since there were only two lines about the relief. Anyway, I will add the information about the national parks in the main article about Peru. Please be so kind as to check it out and let me know if there are any changes to make before erasing it. Thanks in advance. AnniAriel (talk) 18:10, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@AnniAriel: I understand that you are upset that your original edits to the Peru article were erased, but I ask that you try to understand two things:
1. as I wrote on your talk page, your edit changed the region structure without any discussion. This meant that readers would no longer be able to navigate to find articles about cities, towns and parks in Peru by clicking in links, other than the top 9 cities and top 9 other destinations.
2. I think that the information you added was too detailed for a travel guide. I would be useful to have a summary of the important points about the geography or Peru, without having the same level of detail that is in w:Geography of Peru.
An article on the National parks and natural reserves of Peru would be a useful addition to this travel guide. I would be happy to help with the formatting of such an article. Ground Zero (talk) 21:38, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Departments of Peru

[edit]

Good morning everyone, I have one question to ask. I would really like to know if posting the 24 departments of Peru would be wrong in the main article on Peru. My question arises because, when checking the part about regions, it talks about the Amazonas region. However, I believe this region is incorrectly named, as it does not cover the Amazonas department, which is also a great place to visit in Peru with many attractions to offer to travelers. I am committed to starting this new article, if that matters. I will be looking forward to your answer. AnniAriel (talk) 13:38, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

The Peruvian Amazon region includes the departments of Loreto, Ucayali, Amazonas, Madre de Dios, Huanuco and San Martin. Why not add information on the Amazonas department to the Peruvian Amazon article to make it better? If ot becomes to big, then it could be split up into subregions. But for now, subdividing is not necessary.
The departments are important for the administration of Peru, but they are not important to travellers. I was fortunate to spend one month in Peru, but it did not matter to me which department I was in. I visited Iquitos, but I didn't know or care which department it was in. To me, it was in the Peruvian Amazon.
As I mentioned on your talk page, the country article should list 5-9 cities. Listing 24 places is not the style for country articles that the Wikivoyage community has decided on. See Wikivoyage:Avoid long lists. (You can propose changes to Wikivoyage style at any time.) Ground Zero (talk) 14:19, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Would you consider Peru Hop touting?

[edit]

Are changes contributed by user @Elenaborshch considered touting? What's community's perspective?

As far as I can see, that user made plenty of contributions across Peru-related articles, promoting Peru Hop business.

In particular, Peru Hop got listed as first in Peru#By bus 2 (for whatever reason).

Other affected articles include:

Arequipa

Cuzco

Apologies, better link for user: Special:Contributions/Elenaborshch 157.25.121.90 11:25, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is hard to know what edits made in 2017 were seen as touting, but Special:Diff/3342994/3343234 and the followup Special:Diff/3343416/3343730 indeed seem at least a bit touty. Why do you ask now? Don't you agree? Or do you suggest that the mentions should be tweaked or removed? You could do that without discussion in the obvious cases. For me, not knowing how transport works in Peru, it is hard to judge how beneficial those mentions are and whether the comparison to ordinary buses is fair. –LPfi (talk) 12:17, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @LPfi, I wanted to get a second opinion, as I'm not a regular wikivoyage editor.
I've stumbled upon this "Peru Hop" bonanza while doing a research for my trip to Peru. I find these mentions a bit pushy and promotion-oriented, and I think they should be tweaked.
I'll go through affected articles and see what I can do, thank you! 2A01:110F:4816:6100:2B47:EA72:4A9:43E0 21:16, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, go ahead. Some cases may be clearer when you have been there (and there are certainly other things you could contribute). If you don't mind, creating an account and editing as logged in would make it easier to see the edits you've done and communicate about them – also edits without account are welcome, but you might not see messages on your former IP's talk pages. –LPfi (talk) 17:07, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
