Mureș County is in Szeklerland, Transylvania, Romania. Mureș county has a vibrant multicultural fabric that includes Hungarian-speaking Székelys and Transylvanian Saxons, with a rich heritage of fortified churches and towns.

  • 1 Târgu-Mureș — famous for its Art Nouveau buildings, it is the cultural and economic centre of the Székely Land
  • 2 Reghin Reghin on Wikipedia — a former German town with a lot of Jewish history
  • 3 Saschiz — a UNESCO World Heritage site with a fortified church and the ruins of a peasant fortress
  • 4 Sangeorgiu de Mures Sângeorgiu de Mureș on Wikipedia — home to the grand Máriaffy Castle, now in a stare of disrepair
  • 5 Sighișoara — one of the few still inhabited citadels in Europe; a UNESCO world heritage site
  • 6 Sovata — a spa town and health resort with several saltwater lakes
  • 7 Târnăveni — set in a wonderful natural landscape of hills, with the Târnava Mică river passing through it

The northeastern side of the county consists of the Călimani and Gurghiu Mountains and the sub-Carpathian hills, members of the Inner Eastern Carpathians. The rest of the county is part of the Transylvanian Plateau, with deep but wide valleys.

The main river crossing in the county is the Mureș River. The Târnava Mare River and the Târnava Mică River also cross the county.

The county's population is about 53% ethnic Romanian, 38% Hungarian, 7% Roma, and less than 0.5% German and other groups.

Some of the main tourist attractions in the county are the old city of Târgu Mureș, the medieval city of Sighișoara, Sovata resort, the city of Reghin, the medieval fortified church of Saschiz, and the Călimani and Gurghiu Mountains.
