Zootopia: Hot Pursuit is a trackless dark ride at Shanghai Disneyland. Based on the Zootopia franchise,[1] it opened in December 2023 as the centerpiece of the park's Zootopia land.[2][3][4] It is Disney's first trackless ride in Mainland China,[5][6] and likely considered a model for future Zootopia attractions at other Disney parks.[7]
Ride experience
[edit]As guests (Newbies) enter Zootopia Police Department they get an alert from Chief Bogo that Dawn Bellwether and her two Ram accomplices have escaped from the Zootopia State Prison and The Zootopia Females House of Detention respectively, ended up at large in Zootopia itself and kidnapped famous pop star singer Gazelle before the big concert which will bring the Zootopia Day Festival to a standstill and throw the city into chaos (as predicted in a prison library book the villainess had doodled in). After being inform by Chief Bogo, Dawn Bellwether suddenly hacks into the ZPD's system. She mocks the ZPD while her cronies finished wrapping Gazelle up in a blanket and tying rope around it, leaving her head and feet unwrapped. Serious about the situation, Bogo tells the guests to head for the loading station to go out and save the Zootopia Day Festival from disaster. Once the guests jump in police cars, they arrive in Tundratown were officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde meet them. Judy tells them the situation and she and Nick try to catch Bellwether and save Gazelle. But the escapees, spooked by the ZPD run away from the scene of the crime, taking Gazelle with them and the chase is on. Bellwether and the two Ram cronies try to escape Hopps and Wilde on snowmobiles with the blanket-bound Gazelle still with them. Hopps, Wilde and the riders chase them on a spare snowmobile through Tundratown before entering Sahara Square, having a near miss with a freight train, riders along with Hopps and Wilde crash their snowmobile off-screen. Riders enter the rest of Sahara Square where Duke Weaselton is trying to sell Gazelle-themed merchandise. Then after an encounter with a fake Gazelle, Hopps and Wilde aided by the riders catch Bellwether and her cronies trying to lose them in the crowd while the riders take a detour to the Mystic Springs Oasis run by Yax the yak. Once inside, riders encounter nude mammals with their private parts still invisible, even Nangi the elephant. Bellwether who was inside flees the Mystic Springs Oasis. Next riders enter the Rainforest District where Hopps and Wilde catch sight of Bellwether, her cronies and there kidnapee in one of the cars of the sky tram, and go after them while riders head into one of the cars. Once onboard Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde appear on the sky tram's roof. Nick ensures his partner and the riders present that the sky tram's car was safe to hold them in, only to accidentally kick a bolt loose. The car literally hangs by a thread and to make matters worse, Bellwether appears and kicks the duo off the sky tram's roof taking one of her cronies with them, while in the other car Gazelle watches horrified. Without warning Bellwether disconnects the sky tram's car from it's mechanism wheels, sending it and the riders plummeting towards the ground. While in mid-fall Nick throws Judy at the crony and the bunny slaps a pair of ram-sized handcuffs on the latter's wrists before getting themselves tangled up in the vines. Riders encounter Flash the sloth (who was living up to his name) in his car and they drive off to Savanna Central where the Zootopia Day Festival is held. Riders enter Savanna Central where Bellwether not wanting to get dragged back to The Zootopia Females House of Detention tries to loose the ZPD by driving her Vespa (fitted with a sidecar) the wrong way in the style of Miss De Vil. Bellwether's joyride gets short-lived as she ends up cornered by the ZPD. A Police helicopter arrives on the scene, Judy holding onto the ladder and Nick who was also clinging onto the ladder with her was able to lean forward plucking Gazelle from her blanket prison. Either wanting Gazelle or parole, Bellwether sets off after the aircraft, scattering attendees left and right before crashing her Vespa front wheel first into an ice cream which one of the attendees had dropped in the chaos, catapulting the villainess through the air before getting herself stuck in a Big Donut like Weaselton had before, ending her joyride for good. Benjamin Clawhauser the cheetah happy that the villainess has been recaptured, arrests Bellwether, charges her at the Police station and then locking her away in a detention cell with her cronies awaiting trial. The ride ends with Gazelle performing Try Everything and Judy Hopps and her foxy partner Nick Wilde congratulating the riders for there help in recapturing the former mayoress.
Music
[edit]Academy award-winning composer, Michael Giacchino composed the music for this attraction based on the scores by him, using a 65-piece orchestra to synchronize some of the scenes from the Walt Disney Animation Studios film including 4 classical sections like Strings, Woodwinds, Percussion and Brass as well as four rhythm sections such as guitar, bass, drums and keyboards.[8]
Incident
[edit]Soon after the ride opened, an incident, in which a child exited the ride and was dragged underneath, occurred.[9][10][11]
Reception
[edit]The ride received positive reviews from critics and audiences.[12]
It was nominated in the category of Outstanding Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards.[13]
