Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Update from President, WANZ
I'm delighted to announce WANZ was successful in its funding application to WMF. Previously we've sought general grant funding for this financial year. With this latest application we've requested funding for three years and substantially increased the amount we've requested. For next financial year (1 July 2023 - 30 June 2024) we've got four main activities
* hiring a full time contractor to provide executive support
* running a 6 month Wikimedian at Large series of activities
* working in partnership with Pasifika editors to develop a pilot programme intended to increase participation in Wikimedia Foundation platforms in the Pacific Islands
* supporting a group of Pasifika editors to travel to Wikimedia 2023 in Singapore
The budget also includes funding for an annual WikiCon, a number of editathons, and a fund to support Wikipedians to travel to either Wikimedia Foundation conferences or conferences of communities that are likely to engage with editing and/or support contributions of content to Wikimedia Foundation platforms.
If you are interested in funding to support you in organising a community editing event or training new editors or any other content project, please contact the secretary of WANZ for information on requesting funding. A member of the committee will be happy to assist you in your funding application to make it as easy as possible.

The WANZ committee are organising an in-person strategy weekend. This is a repeat of a successful weekend last year where we made major strides in identifying the administration tasks that were needed to be accomplished and who would do them, discussed the ways we would work together including platforms and communications styles, and generally ensured that we set ourselves up to work together well and successfully.

Update from Treasurer, WANZ
  • The committee will have to think about how we are going to ensure that the large amount of money we are going to be entrusted with is going to be spent appropriately. I'm currently working on a grant policy for the WANZ committee, a grant application form, and a procedure on how we can procure a Wikimedian at Large for the fulfilling the activity. Time passes quickly and we'll need to be organised to ensure that our spending on activities occurs.

3. Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2023

Don't forget to add your program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years.   • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. DrThneed has been doing some work getting citations in other language Wikipedias. Also had presentation on this project accepted for the LIANZA conference in October, 2023.

Te Papa encouraged staff to contribute to an all day editing session on May 9. The Te Papa Library team were there for the whole day and key editors on staff joined Te Papa's Wikipedian in Residence for the day. It was very successful with new sign ups to edit and a lot of upskilling. See dashboard.
  • Auckland Women in Architecture editathon 20 May 2023 The Auckland In-Person event had a great turn out of around 25 people. The photography session was rained out but editing and updating was great. Online session also went well.
  • Dunedin Women in Architecture editathon 20 May 2023 Small session of with three people attending in the room and connected with the online event at the start and end. Thanks to David and Andy for coming, was great to have company! Made a bunch of new pages, including a Wikidata project for women architects, to store Wikidata queries about them. We went from single figures to 281 items in Wikidata.
  • Dunedin ToolCamp is 17–18 June, although we're still confirming which venue is available. But it will be happening! Venue still to be confirmed.
  • Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?


Anything to update / discuss?
  • Ambrosia10 is currently away but has recently seen this. I wonder whether we as a group would consider putting together or adapting a general kit for running a Wikipedia editathon type event. Giving practical steps for folk in NZ about how to go about this to ease more folk to create events. Just a suggestion. (Yes, great idea; this would make a good collective session for different NZ edit-a-thon organisers to sit down together and do when we're in the same city, say at a WikiCon or Wikimania—and there's some other resources that could be adapted too —Giantflightlessbirds)

This has been started by the organisers of the Auckland WikiCon 2021 and build on by the organisers of the Wellington WikiCon 2023. This is one of the tasks that the committee are considering allocating to the executive support contractor next financial year. 4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • MargaretRDonald Have been working with Oronsay on Australian cartooning. Also continuing Korean themed articles.
  • Oronsay in addition to the Australian Cartooning project also did some work on landscape architects for thesis project and also contributed to the online session for New Zealand architecture.

General Group Discussion on Importance Rankings Users don’t see the importance ratings except on the talk pages. Ranking is the way the WikiProject New Zealand team members determine where we need to put our resources if we have limited time. You become a New Zealand project team by adding your name to the project page. Generally people would expect you to be active on the project rather than only ranking articles. There is likely a need to rerank architecture articles in the past year to see who is using it and reassess importance.

Page views is an important aspect but we can’t count this if it’s brand new or doesn’t exist. What about structural importance? In addition to this there are not structurally important the knowledge equity articles will equally be important. Importance is also based on the value of pages to New Zealanders.   • David Nind Attended the Dunedin architecture editathon and visited the Hocken Library.
  • Beeswaxcandle Real life is a bit crazy with boss away and a COVID breakout with staff has meant focus has been on work. Work on Wikisource contines and completed issue 1-40 of the Transactions in depth articles by author. Noted that the Hokitika booklet has had 9000 views of the talking version!
  • Einebillion Also very busy at work so time mostly spent on final work for the General Funding Grant application and organising the upcoming WANZ committee in person strategy weekend. Had a great time contributing to Te Papa's #1Lib1Ref session and big thanks to Avocadobabygirl for organising.
