User talk:Vox Humana 8'
Many thanks for your message on my talk page. Any more information you have on this organ to boost the article would, I'm sure, be very useful. If I can be any assistance, do not hesitate to ask. Mdcollins1984 00:57, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Churches in Brighton
[edit]Hi Vox - hope you are well. Good work on the church pix, especially interior views of St Bartholomew's; I tried to get some 2 weeks ago when I was doing my New England Quarter photography, but it was closed and locked at that time. Just to let you know, the link you entered on the project page didn't work, so I have adjusted it slightly - it should now work correctly. Cheers, Matt. Hassocks5489 19:39, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
Renaming of articles
[edit]Hi Vox. I've noticed you often rename articles from "St. Xxxxx's Church" to "Church of Xxxxx", sometimes citing a "Naming policy". Could you point me to this naming policy as I can't find it? Thanks, A bit iffy 12:05, 4 March 2007 (UTC).
- Hi Vox: I'm afraid I agree with A bit iffy that your changes seem a bit odd; I note your response to him that you recall an admin person told you this was the case, but I can't see it anywhere as policy, and in general Wikipedia adopts the local practice which, I would suggest, is "St. Xxxxx's Church", especially outside the U.S. If there is a policy, I suggest the opposite is true - see St. Mary's Church, St. Andrew's Church and St. Peter's Church for examples. What do you think? Carbonix 10:15, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- I've just reverted your name changes for two churches in Nottingham, and now noticed this discussion; despite your excellent work on some articles (eg Brighton churches) I do think you've ridden rather roughshod over most people's naming approach! Can I suggest you do no more renaming of church articles unless a consensus as you seem to be advocating is/has been agreed. Thanks - keep up the other good work, however! Wikipedia Organ Project
[edit]Hi there. With your user name and editing record, you look like someone who might be interested in this project. We already have some other organ stops participating (a 16' Cor Anglais and Double Diapason) so we could do with some softer stops for balance! No problem if you're not interested, but thought I'd mention it. I'll now go and read about the Ewell organ... Best wishes, Bencherlite 13:49, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Will do. BTW, as for Vox Humana being a soft stop, you should hear my mother's recording of César Franck's Fantaisie in A - the Vox Humana dominates whenever the pedal reed (an Ophicleide on 15-inch wind) doesn't! --Vox Humana 8' 19:57, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
User page vandalism
[edit]That was my account, but it wasn't me personally. You'll have to take my word for it on that, like I took your word that when you said you'd apologise, you would. Still waiting...Gary Kirk [Talk] 16:14, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- What? I didn't apologise? Ah well, sorry for that. Apologies were intended!--Vox Humana 8' 19:43, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, by the way, Mr Hacker, I'm no vandal - that was someone who, like you did to Gary, hacked my account. As for Capuses/Campae, I realise I was wrong. I was working on poor advice. Mind you, I still haven't surrendered over the train station debate - I have merely ordered a temporary ceasefire. Plus, as soon as I have enough money, I will be joining S.P.U.C..--Vox Humana 8' 19:54, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Surrey wikiproject
[edit]Hi, I saw your message on my Talk Page today about the Surrey Wikiproject, the page you linked to however is a new page, as the correct link should have been Wikipedia:WikiProject_Surrey. Also, why put up a "Surrey shield" image when the Surrey article itself already has a coat-of-arm image?
- That's because the main image wouldn't load - Firefox kept telling me it contained errors so couldn't be displayed.--Vox Humana 8' 13:00, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
What exactly does this project do? ipridian 23:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Hello Richard, Thanks for your message on my talk page. I'm fairly busy at the mo, and generally only correcting errors rather than doing massive edits/contributions, but will keep an eye on the project and add any articles as I come across them. Cheers, --Leigh 11:46, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Hi there. Thats for the message, I have been thinking about doing some more work on the local area on wikipedia so I'll join your project. I live in Merstham, so I might start there. --Renski 11:45, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Hia. I grew up in Sanderstead in South Croydon, Surrey. When I'm next there I'll try to remember to take a few photos. Parmesan 18:52, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Hi, Richard. I am sorry I haven't replied earlier, have been very busy lately. My first stay in Surrey was at Godstone Green, Surrey, a very pretty village, and I was at a agricultural holiday camp there, all this was over fifty years ago. Yes, people did that in those days, stayed in a camp to earn pocket money while they were with like-minded young people, in its way quite a lively group and enjoyable. Have been in the Croydon and Wimbledon area ever since, not exactly Surrey these days, as you know. Yes, I love Surrey, until a couple of years ago used to go out with the East Surrey Ramblers, mostly in the Surrey area. Had to give it up for health reasons though. If there is anything I can help you with, do let me know. Sorry about the late reply. Dieter Simon 21:26, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Re:Vox Humana 8'
[edit]You said: "You had some doubts as to unblocking me - well, here's further evidence for why you were wrong. I have now started Wikipedia:WikiProject Surrey and its associated portal, Portal:Surrey. I am determined to keep making positive contributions to Wikipedia and will continue to do so for as long as I can."
- That's great news! --Yamla 16:06, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Churches of Brighton
[edit]Hi Vox,
I have constructed a new table of significant churches in Brighton, which (once it is a bit more complete) I intend to migrate into the Churches of Brighton article. The main purpose at this stage is to give us, and anybody else who wants to work on Brighton church articles, an idea of what needs to be done. The table is currently on one of my userpage subpages: see here (ignore the other table about APTIS tickets!! :)) Let me know what you think, and especially if there are any important churches I've missed out. (There are several more RC I need to add, and the order is a bit random at the moment.) Hassocks5489 15:26, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Check your user page...
[edit]Hey Vox, I think somebody has vandalised your user page ... you might want to check the picture and re-upload the one that used to be there.
By the way, check here for current progress on St Nicholas Church in Btn. Cheers, Hassocks5489 12:29, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Tire
[edit]I don't have the energy or interest to revert it back, but your move of Tire was not consistent with WP:MOS#National_varieties_of_English. Some might get pretty cranky about such changes. (John User:Jwy talk) 04:38, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
You were correct in changing the spelling on the Motorcycle page, but changing the spelling on the Tire page and moving it was not. You would have known this if you had read the talk pages before editing. NHammen 15:52, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- I moved it back to tire. Don't do that, there have been lengthy discussions about it, please don't ignore them. Especially when childish anti-American invective is your motivation. Adam Bishop 19:33, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- Do not change "tire" to "tyre" on the titles of articles. Moving them is against Wiki policy
- Please read all the guidelines contained in Wikipedia:Manual of Style#National varieties of English that include the following:
- Stay with established spelling.
- Follow the dialect of the first contributor.
- These articles have been in the American dialect for a long time, and there is no clear reason to change them. You should not change the spelling used in an article from one variant to another, and there is no compelling reason to do so. Other editors are justified in reverting such changes.CZmarlin 23:08, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- In the case of the changes you made to the Toyo Tire & Rubber Company article, you did not even look up the official name of the company on their web pages: their name is spelled with "TIRE" CZmarlin 04:12, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'd made it perfectly clear: I made a blanket find-and-replace on the article, then corrected links as necessary. However, that does not mean that this is right - everyone who has any sense knows full well that "tire" is a mis-spelling - also, don't you think that, given they were invented in Britain, they should be named with the British spelling?--Vox Humana 8' 22:16, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

- The Wikipedia Manual clearly states: Follow the dialect of the first contributor. Moreover, you should know that writing that "everyone who has any sense knows full well that "tire" is a mis-spelling" is clearly a very biased and an unfortunate point of view. You need to learn to respect various forms, languages, and dialects. Because a Scottish veterinarian is recognized as the inventor of the inflatable bicycle tyre/tire, should all these articles on this topic (as well as company names) be using Scots language and dialect? CZmarlin 00:08, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- No, just use straight British English, except where company names demand the American spelling - these will have been registered as trademarks and should be respected as such. However, as the inventor of the tyre was a citizen of the United Kingdom, not the USA, it stands to reason that the main text should use British spellings.--Vox Humana 8' 14:24, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Charles Macpherson
[edit]Hello there. I'm not a frequent contributor to Wikipedia but I've added quite a few links to CPDL (or ChoralWiki). I noticed that you'd edited the article on St Paul's Cathedral and I wondered if you know anything more about Dr. Charles Macpherson, organist 1916-1927. I have been searching the web for any info on him but to no avail. I believe that he wrote an evening service (Magnificat and Nunc dimittis) in A or C for 3 treble parts. I'm sorry if you've got no idea what I'm talking about! Perhaps you could ask your mother as you mentioned that she is an organist? Many thanks. --Bobnotts 13:54, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
England is a country
[edit]Thank you for your keen interest in this three month old user talk page issue. Why it matters, I'm not sure, but please refer to this page and to the definition of "country" to see that just because it is not a sovereign state doesn't automatically disqualified it from being called a country. However, I believe that you'll find the entire point moot because if you go back far enough into the debate as it relates to my interaction with young Patrick, you'll see that it stems from him wrongly assuming that I had asserted England's "country-ness", when in fact I had merely listed it among places I had visited. RE: Brighton Expansion
[edit]Sure, I support this. - PatricknoddyTALK (reply here)|HISTORY 21:14, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Hi Richard; I'll compose a fuller reply to your proposal tomorrow, time permitting, but in principle I would say a "qualified yes". I still think that there should be a separate BAH (sub-)project, as the scope of the Brighton and Hove sphere of articles is just too wide to cope with in any other way - just think of all the church articles we still have to do! :) - but I agree that it would make sense to have something dedicated to Sussex as well. I saw your recently-founded Wikiproject Surrey; something along those lines for Sussex would get my support, although I would still be happier to see some separation of the BAH project rather than full integration.
One thing I will say about Sussex articles generally is that the Crawley article needs serious attention. There is potentially so much to write about and refer to - really, its scope almost matches that of Brighton - and yet there is hardly anything there! I would like to dedicate some time to improving it, although I am trying to juggle Brighton stuff, spoken articles, my railway ticket articles and project, uploading images, contributing to WP:DYK and doing other fairly important things such as going to work (!). Maybe a Sussex WikiProject would help give that vague aim some structure...
Actually, this has turned into a full reply! Anyway, I'll watch out for what other people have said as well. (PS. I have taken a lot more photos of Brighton churches - not uploaded yet, though. Many of the Brighton-based (as opposed to Hove-based) churches here have been covered. I have started writing St. Martin's today.) Hassocks5489 22:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
A resounding "No" to an expansion of the Brighton project in that way, but a resounding "yes" to an entirely separate wikiproject Sussex, which I would happily join. Brighton is no longer part of Sussex technically anyway. Fork me 12:15, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Just read your reply on my userpage. I can see your point, but still feel that WP:Sussex and WP:Brighton should be entirely different entities. Sure they could link to each other, that would benefit both, but Brighton is no longer a sub unit of Sussex, so its project shouldn't be either. Fork me 16:15, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
I really think that if this discussion is actually going to mean anything it needs to take place openly on the discussion page of WP:Brighton, as opposed to lots of conversations across individuals userpages. Fork me 14:21, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Your lovely hometown...
[edit]Ha ha - I thought you might notice these two contributions!! I managed to achieve three things in one day with a journey up the Mole Valley Line on 17th March: once a month on a Saturday, I go up to Bromley to visit a fellow railway-ticket-collecting friend, to discuss latest developments, pick up his latest "spares" to look through at home, and so on, so I did that in the afternoon; I needed to buy a ticket from the self-service machine at Belmont, pretty much the only Southern station I needed one from for my collection since the new machines were rolled out in 2004/2005; and, perhaps most importantly, I needed to visit a number of stations to get pix for Wikipedia. It was a case of jumping off one train, rushing around doing the necessary and getting on the next, so I only spent 8 minutes at Leatherhead! I have been doing this sort of thing (mainly for tickets rather than photos) for the last 10 years or so, and I must have visited Leatherhead station about 20 times, but only once have I ventured into the town centre. I have been up Box Hill about 12 times, though (I've just noticed - no photo in that article!!!). Incidentally, you asked about my camera: it's quite an old, non-SLR digital model: a Nikon Coolpix E2500, probably about 4-5 years old now. My Dad passed it to me when he upgraded to this. I never used to do much photography until I went digital; now, I carry the camera with me at all times, even to and from work. Hassocks5489 12:16, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
Hey Vox, just letting you know I e-mailed you. If you don't want to talk about the things I mentioned, that's fine, obviously, it is none of my business if you don't want it to be. If you aren't going to reply, please message or e-mail me, just so I don't spam you, thinking you haven't got the message. Thanks. I look forward to your reply. J Milburn 00:24, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
Vandalism
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. However, your recent edits to Richard Dawkins have been reverted as they could be seen to be defamatory or potentially libellous. Take a look at our welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Joe D (t) 16:32, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- And "scumbag" isn't defamatory vandalism? The term "anti-religious" has been discussed before. If you think the phrasing is accurate and notable enough to go in the introduction perhaps you should discuss it on the talk page first, and provide references showing who uses the term. Joe D (t) 16:41, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- You want to reference that "extremist" comment if you want it to stay. And even if you do find anything, you can only go as far as to say "Source X has LABELLED Richard Dawkins an extremist", not "Richard Dawkins IS an extremist". See here. - Zeibura S. The use of consensus doesn't apply when a clearcut violation of a Wikipedia policy occurs. Even should editors agree to overlook the "Do Not Use" guidelines spelled out in WP:EL, that doesn't make it permissible. Your use of a sock User:EccentricRichard in lieu of User:Vox Humana 8' to do a third revert must be avoided to remain in good standing. JGHowes talk - 19:56, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
I note that right now you are the one and only member of the project listed above. As you know, the average project is supposed to be a collaborative effort, meaning more than one person is involved. Right now, the project page is a potential candidate for deletion based on its having only one member. I have added it to the Project Directory's European page anyway, but really think you might want to read the WikiProject Guide for a little help in maybe getting word of the project out. Setting up a banner is probably one of the best and quickest ways to do so. If you want any help in setting it up, please feel free to let me know on my talk page (my watchlist is huge, so I might not see your response on it) by and I'll do what I can to help. Thank you. Sockpuppetry
[edit]I may be wrong, but it appears to me you think sockpuppetry is a good thing. I doubt it. Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Vox Humana 8' --Tagishsimon (talk)
- You have used socks to evade 3RR to support a link to your own website, and in furtherance of your opinion as to what a user may or may not put on their user page. Neither of those things has anything to do with vandalism, and in any event use use of socks fatally undermines your argument, even were vandalism an issue. You are using socks to circumvent policy (the link to your website) and, I presume, to avoid scrutiny from other editors. Those are clearly against [Wikipedia:Sock puppetry|policy]. Per that policy, I see no legitimate uses of multiple accounts in your actions. I think you should reconsider your approach. --Tagishsimon (talk)
- It clearly is a matter of opinion, since my opinion (and come to that Andy's) is not the same as yours or other editors. In this instance, the problem is with your inability to see that others might hold a different opinion to you, and that your opinion is not objective truth. And even if there were no other opinion than that the paragraph violated policy a) that does not amount to vandalism, so much as it amounts to a violation of policy and b) there is no excuse whatsoever for using sockpuppets to fight vandalism or policy breaches. I'm sure you were taught that two wrongs do not a right make. Stop analysing Andy's perceived errors and put some more thought into the possibility that you might be wrong. --Tagishsimon (talk)
WP Sussex
[edit]Hi Richard. Thanks for founding the WikiProject, which I have joined. I can do bits and pieces on it. Would be best to drop me a note if there is anything you see as a priority, otherwise I might forget to contribute. Itsmejudith 08:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- Same for me; I have also taken the liberty of correcting Itsmejudith's username on the page (I think she inserted 5 tildes instead of 4, producing a timestamp instead of her username!). As you probably know by now, my specialities are church articles, transport stuff (especially rail) and photos, but I can turn my hand to most things, especially with the resources of Brighton library and history centre at my disposal (ha ha!). One big priority will be to improve the Crawley article beyond its current dismal state: this is a town of significant local importance and some national relevance, so a much better article is needed. I have plans, but they will take a long time to implement, what with everything else!! Hassocks5489 11:39, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- I have added myself too - and set up the template to be added to article talk pages. I've also introduced a few links to the project from likely looking places, eg Sussex and East Sussex portals, which I hope will bring more editors to the project. DuncanHill 11:50, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Please read WP:NOT. Wikipedia is not repository of images. While inclusion of (free) images is highly encouraged, Wikipedia articles should not become mere galleries. Wikipedia is an enciclopedia, and as such images only accompany/illustrate text. Therefore, it's a common and encouraged practice that images that cannot be fit into an article are moved over to Commons. This way Wikipedia is still an encyclopedia and not an image depository, and no information is lost: it's merely just a click away. I hope you will understand this and will end the revert war on commons and will not revert my removal of huge gallery on Church of St. Mary & St. Nicholas, Leatherhead. [edit]I think it's great that you're tagging nonnotable articles for deletion, but you're going to get somebody wanting to cram a Tuba Magna somewhere with edit summaries like this one. Just a friendly note! -- But|seriously|folks 03:17, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- Not someplace small, that's for sure! When I was in college, I tinkered a little with a certain large organ in Philadelphia. Not THE large organ in Philadelphia; #2. Cheers! -- But|seriously|folks 03:23, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- It's this one. We used to hang out in the air chests. The larger one could easily seat 25 people for dinner, which I have heard was done once as a fundraiser, but that might be one of those urban legends. I wish I could have played it properly, but I'm not that sort of keyboard player. Still, I got quite a rush running through what little I know of Bach's Toccata and Fuge in D Minor on the thing. It's now MIDI capable as well! The Father Willis Organ is a good deal older and looks quite impressive. I'm glad these old instruments are still around. They certainly don't make them like they used to! -- But|seriously|folks 03:37, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I didn't remove your tag since I'm not sure it's notable, but I am curious what part you consider a "hoax"? I can play the game on my computer, and since it is JavaScript, not Flash, I see no reason it couldn't be played on an Iphone. It even appears that it may be specifically sized to fit the Iphone (I don't have one, so I can't be sure). So where's the hoax? Seattlenow 17:56, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Why are you trying to delete my page?
[edit]Why have you attempted to delete my listing? Just because you don't find it relevant to you does not mean it is not relevant to others. I personally do not care about churches in England (which seems to be your forte). Nevertheless, I am not deleting your listings. Please do me the same consideration.--Lockamy 07:51, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Hi there, I just joined your WikiProject. I'm worried it might be a bit inactive, so I've started a discussion of the Polesden Lacey article on the talkpage. It'd be good to get a Surrey article on the Main Page one day!

There will also be a special edition when the new album is released. Also thanks to Neranei for some of the U2 news.
We have two new members since the start of the month! They are Vero444 and MC. We now have 38 members!
More info from the album page here.
Last month's newsletter incorrectly stated that there were 34 members. This should've been 36. Also, under the "U2 News" section, line 3, instead of saying most recent single it should've said most recent song (this has since been corrected). The editors sincerely apologize for any misunderstandings this may have caused. The correct version of the July newsletter can be found here.
All members of the U2 Wikiproject please note that voting for the next collaboration of the fortnight starts on THE 12TH OF AUGUST. Please visit the collaboration department for more details. |

Lesbian background and Marriage of Ms. Cornwell
[edit]I believe you deleted my well-sourced edit on Ms. Cornwell's Lesbian relationship and subsequent marriage. All the statements are true and sourced in court records and the Boston Globe. I am unsure of why you consider this vandelism? 68.100.92.224 02:10, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Angmering, etc
[edit]Hello — thanks for your note on my talk page. I'm not actually from Angmering myself, although I did pick it as my username because I went to school there (I'm from just down the road in Clapham). Sadly I am exiled to Norwich these days (I'll go back to Sussex someday though!), but if there's anything I can do to help out with the project I'll try and chip in. WikiProject Redwall Roll-Call
[edit]Hey there! Your username is listed on the WikiProject Redwall participants list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active on the project. Your name has therefore been moved to a "Potentially Active" list. If you still consider yourself an active WikiProject Redwall editor, please move your name from the "Potentially Active" list to the "Active Participants" list. You may also wish to add {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Redwall/Userbox}} to your userpage, if you haven't done so already. Conversely, if you do not wish to be considered a member of the WikiProject, leave your name where it is and it will be moved to the "Inactive" list. If you wish to make a clean break with the Project, however, you may move your name to the "Inactive" list. Thanks! ~~~~ |

Also Neranei has recently started the U2 Portal. Don't forget to visit it when you can.
On front cover of All That You Can't Leave Behind is a very subtle Biblical reference. In the background J 33-3 can be seen. This is a reference to verse 33 of chapter 3 of the book of Jeremiah: "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and hidden things which you have not known." |
Welcome to the September Edition of the U2 WikiProject Newsletter. The theme for this newletter is "All That You Can't Leave Behind". We hope you enjoy reading it!
Our new members this month are Keeper76 and Jort227. We have now reached 40 members.

Church of St Wilfrid, Mobberley
[edit]I am interested in your comment about the origin of the organ at the Church of St Wilfrid, Mobberley. The info came from the church's website, and I suppose the church should know where their organ came from. It is not possible that some of the registers were taken, rather than the full organ (which I agree would be unlikely to fit into a parish church)? Could you check this out and make the appropriate comment in the article? In the meantime I have amended the text to put the reference where it belongs, ie. before your comment.
On another subject, where can I find the official line about the "standard" title for churches? I have searched and been unable to find it. If your revision is the standard I will have quite a bit of work to do to move a lot of articles. Thank you. Peter I. Vardy 15:33, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- Peter: Regarding the titles of articles on churches, I think Vox is wrong here, and indeed if there is a "standard" the opposite is true; under the common usage rule (see WP:NC(CN)), church article names should reflect local usage. I and others raised the issue in March (see above at Renaming of articles) in some detail, but without response so far. So please don't move any articles; indeed, unless Vox can persude us otherwise, I think his moves should be reversed, in this case to St Wilfrid's Church, Mobberley ! I, like you, await illumination. Carbonix 21:26, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- Following the above, here is a copy of my message to Carbonix.
- "I think there are arguments on both sides. I looked hard and long for guidance on naming churches when I started doing a series on Cheshire churches and found no guidance. So I followed Wikipedia:Naming conventions which says "Generally, article naming should prefer what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize" and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) which says "Convention: Use the most common name of a person or thing that does not conflict with the names of other people or things." Most English people say "St xxxxx's church", rather than "Church of St xxxxx". The majority of titles of British church articles follow the former style, as do the vast majority of articles on US churches. There is no WikiProject on churches so I agree we should continue with the common format unless there is an authoritative convention on the other style." Peter I. Vardy 13:28, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message on my talk page. I do not think that "an admin once told me" adequately reflects consensus or that it is authoritative enough to form a policy for Wikipedia. What I have said above represents what I see as the current consensus. I therefore, with support from other editors, intend to continue to use the format "St xxxx's Church" and I will change back the titles of those in the Cheshire category. I shall not of course change any of the titles on the articles you have contributed, and I hope you will not change any more of mine. Best wishes.Peter I. Vardy 08:56, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks again for your messages. I think we are pretty well in agreement, ie. that the title for a church should be "St xxxxx's Church" unless it does not make sense or is clumsy, etc. Sorry, I was not trying to "own" articles – I know that nobody does own an article in Wikipaedia; I should have worded it better. I should have said "the articles to which you have contributed" and "the articles to which I have given titles" – that is what I meant. Apologies and best wishes. Peter. Peter I. Vardy 18:11, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Vox and Peter: Thank you both for all this. Yes, I too am much more comfortable with a general style of ‘St Saint’s Church, Town’ for the article title, and I will embrace that approach (subject only, as you say, to us being alert to those more unusual dedications where local use has determined that the ‘Church of St …’ style is the more elegant title, e.g. Church of Our Lady Immaculate). Can I also make a plea for continuing active support for the relevant disambiguation pages; these pages are generally already entitled ‘St Saint’s Church’, as that is the prevalent style of the articles, but they should still include these different variants, as the whole point of disambiguation pages is to help people find what they want. Examples are at St. Nicholas' Church and St. Andrew's Church. Carbonix 22:00, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Church of SS Peter & Paul, Aston
[edit]Can you provide your authority for this change? It looks very strange and un-English, and doesn't seem to agree with the existing guidelines as I understand them, but if there is a convention I have missed, I would be pleased to know of it. HeartofaDog 13:30, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Please can you give me the actual reference to where it says that on Wikipedia this is how church names involving two saints work - I don't believe that this is an agreed name format, and I would like to know your reasons for changing the name to this from a format I would have thought more standard. Thanks. HeartofaDog 22:42, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. The reason why I queried it in the way I did was because of the way you worded your move: "moved Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Aston to Church of SS Peter & Paul, Aston: Naming convention". I was wondering what "naming convention" you had in mind, as this is a format I have not seen before on Wikipedia (although yes, I am aware of it IRL).
- You are of course quite right that there IS no church-naming convention as such. But to the extent that I know the existing guidelines on naming in general - some of which are conveniently summarised further up this talk page - I think probably the original form of the title is more in keeping with them than the new one. For example, the use of "&" in an article title, when it is not an intrinsic typographical part of a proper name, would not be standard, and the abbreviation SS for Saints is not a Wikipedia norm AFAIK - which is of course not to say that the abbreviation is not used elsewhere. HeartofaDog 11:25, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Birmingham Cathedrals
[edit]Before you rename any more articles in this way, PLEASE indicate clearly why you think this is the accepted naming convention. This will involve identifying a Wikipedia guideline and giving the link to it. In the meantime I have reverted St Philip's and am about to try to do St. Chad's. Please do not do anything more to them without a proper discussion. (BTW, it is also not acceptable to blank talk pages).
I see you have been warned, nicely, about bizarre renaming of churches before.... HeartofaDog 23:17, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments. To distinguish two cathedrals in one town by their denominations makes sense (I have done it myself with overseas cathedrals). But I think there are problems with the abbreviations "RC" and "CE" used in an article title. If this were the route to take, then "Birmingham Roman Catholic Cathedral" and "Birmingham Anglican Cathedral" would probably be better.
- But looking at the other RC cathedrals in the UK, this isn't quite how they work. Where there is only one cathedral, Catholic or Anglican, it is always "X-town Cathedral". Where there are two, then the usual way seems to be to call the Anglican cathedral "X-town Cathedral" and the RC one whatever it is most commonly called - so (eg) Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral but St. George's Cathedral, Southwark. So on that basis perhaps whatis needed is "Birmingham Cathedral" and - whatever the RC cathedral in Birmingham is most often called. The article seems always to have been "St Chad's", so perhaps that is how it should stay.
- As for "blanking the talk page" I said that because I noticed that on one or other of the Birmingham cathedral articles you had correctly opened a discussion but closed it far too early and then removed all trace of it from the talk page. HeartofaDog 11:45, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

dude you're a fucking douche
[edit]seriously, you want to force people to keep babies from rape? babies from parents with terminal aids?
a fertilized egg is just a bunch of cells dumbass, its as much as a living thing as a tumor is, theres no mind, theres no consciousness theres no "soul"
making abortion a crime has never stopped it, and it won't stop it, all it will do is end up people having unsafe abortions and alot of them dying or being seriously harmed, although i suppose a tory fuck like you think people deserve that for killing your precious potential life
i have the right to whatever i want with my body, women have a right to theirs, and until something has brain activity its not a live, so a fetus is still part of my body until it becomes a separate body
and if stopping "potential life" is murder, then I've made fucking genocide into Kleenex many a time
also, you're douche Cameron would continue the insane war on drugs, which ruins the lives of thousands of non violent, peaceful drug users, as well as increasing crime rates and poverty, you see in places like holland and switzerland, where drug use and production is not punished, drug use is actually LOWER than in the UK, not that facts matter to you, ones like alcohol and tobacco being legal and killing more than every other illegal drug combined, and drugs like ecstasy and magic mushrooms being class A, even though the percentage of users who go to hospital, let alone die are many times lower, but you see it fit for someone to have 7 years of their life stolen from them, and a life destroying record after that, for someone who has never harmed anyone else, someone who is no more a criminal for downing an E than you are for drinking a beer, that's their life and people like you are fine to see it ruined because YOU can't be bothered to fucking think things through
also your friend cameron will do nothing to repeal the horrible destruction of freedom and the justice system in the name of terrorism, because terrorists aren't just murderers, no we need special laws that mean no one has a right to a fair trial any more, and that you can be detained or extradited to a foreign country for no reason, where you may be tortured, for an indefinite amount of time, with no need for a trial or evidence, EVER, and you could, and people have been locked away and tortured for years, then released with no compensation, not even so much as an apology, not even a charge of what they were meant to have done
no doubt you stopped really paying attention to what im saying as soon as it became apparent i wasn't here to lick your ass and actually had a meaningful point to make
go kill yourself fucker, or at the very least don't ever vote for any fuck who is going to try and ruin my life simply because douches like you are too fucking dull witted to understand the concept of personal liberty and self ownership, —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.201.173.133 (talk) 11:57, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
Bath Abbey
[edit]Hi, Some months ago you asked for Bath Abbey to receive a peer review "before going to WP:GA". Are you still interested in trying to get it to GA standard (probably needs some work on citations & ? move the gallery)? Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset has quite a good record of getting article to GA (& FA) at present & some collaboration & help might be forthcoming from the members of that project.— Rod talk 18:25, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Great & thanks for joining the Somerset wikiproject - there are some sections of the Bath Abbey article which need citations & other areas where there are one sentance paragraphs which reviewers don't like. Why not put a message on the project talk page asking for help & ideas - but we are a bit busy at present Bath, Somerset has just made GA & we are working on geting that to FA & Somerset is currently an FA candidate!— Rod talk 17:42, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- Having looked at this again there is a lot of overlap between the history and architecture sections. It may be better to combine them in chronological order & have sections covering: up to 1087, Middle ages, Modern (or similar) & (where possible) incorporate images from the gallery into the main article to illustrate the points being made. Have a look at Bristol Cathedral which may give some other ideas.— Rod talk 22:41, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Greetings from Somerset, VH8'
[edit]I think the monastic tradition is one of the most important, distinctive, and interesting bits of Somerset heritage, so welcome aboard! I personally think it would be great to have a special page just on the monastic tradition here. I live in a village (Aller) that is right amidst the jigsaw mosaic of lands once owned by Muchelney Abbey, Bath Abbey (which you obviously already know about), Glastonbury Abbey, and Athelney Abbey. I think we're probably physically closest to Athelney, but the village church and adjacent tithe barn and refectory and the construction of the rhynes (drainage ditches) was done by the Muchelney monks. Just up the road from us is Othery, and that village was associated with Glastonbury. My husband learned that one of the first orders of Franciscan monks was located in Bridgwater (a few miles the other side of Othery from us), and that order was started quite soon after Francis died. I don't know that I believe all the Glastonbury myths about the young Jesus coming to Glastonbury Tor with Joseph of Arimathea as a lad, but the monastic tradition definitely goes a l o o o o o n g way back in Somerset. Glad you've joined us! (p.s. I have a son about your age whom I've dragged over here from America, so next year he will have been in three different schools --in two different countries-- in four years without ever having been thrown out. Like you, he seems to have a sense of humor about it...)Celia Kozlowski (talk) 20:34, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Iamges
[edit]Per WP:MOS#Images,
Specifying the size of a thumbnail image is not necessary: without specifying a size, the width will be what readers have specified in their user preferences, with a default of 180px (which applies for the overwhelming majority of readers), and a maximum of 300px. However, the image subject or image properties may call for a specific image width to enhance the readability or layout of an article. Cases where a specific image width is appropriate include:
- images with extreme aspect ratios
- detailed maps, diagrams or charts
- images in which a small region is relevant, but cropping to that region would reduce the coherence of the image
- a lead image that captures the essence of the article (recommended not to be smaller than 300px, as this will make the image smaller for users who have set 300px in their user preferences).
None of these immediately seem to apply to the images you've been adjusting in Bath Abbey. David Underdown (talk) 15:31, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Orgelbau Hey
[edit]A tag has been placed on Orgelbau Hey requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:MercuryFM-1027-01.png
[edit]Thank you for uploading Image:MercuryFM-1027-01.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 14:53, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Template:Cathedral
[edit]A tag has been placed on Template:Cathedral requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

I'm keeping fine- got my A level results (five As, politics was my lowest, with English and RS both satisfyingly high. Also got 100% on one of my history papers, which was a nice surprise. The other was general studies, which I obviously don't much care for...) and I'm doing the typical 'I have lots of time' thing- drinking and finding excuses to go out/have parties. My parents are off to Switzerland next week, but I'm staying here- another excuse for a get-together. How are things going with you? J Milburn (talk) 17:25, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice
[edit]Hi,
As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.
We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.
We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

I'm back...
[edit]...on MSN Messenger, when I can be. I'll probably be signing in for a few hours every couple of nights, more if I can. Finding myself quite busy. I haven't seen you online yet- are you not about much at the moment? J Milburn (talk) 19:38, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hey, it's great to hear from you again! I seriously thought that was it, I thought we wouldn't be talking again. I guess it's pretty ridiculous using separate accounts like this, but if you want to email me, it's the gmail account- if you want to chat, it's hotmail. If you're not using MSN Messenger for whatever reason, email me, as I'd love to hear from you. If you're still on MSN Messenger, I'll be on most evenings (apart from Friday and Saturday, which, for the most part, are my relax nights, if you catch my drift). Hope to hear from you soon! Re:Need to replace stuff by bot
[edit]We're talking fewer than 300 edits, so I'll look into doing it through AWB and do it myself later tonight. I may set the bot on it, but it's probably better if I do it manually. J Milburn (talk) 16:09, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- 300 edits exactly, did the first couple by hand and I've now set the bot to do it. Should probably have gone through some process do get approval for it to do that, but never mind. J Milburn (talk) 16:28, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- The bot's finished its run- it skipped St Peter's Church, Delamere and St Cross Church, Appleton Thorn, so you may want to check them manually, but other than that, all should be good. J Milburn (talk) 18:45, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (File:Sussex shield.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Sussex shield.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. FileBot (talk) 23:10, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi again
[edit]Welcome back! Good to hear from you again. I'll send you a proper reply later in the week, once I've done as much work as I can on my latest (Grade II* listed buildings in Brighton and Hove). I was out yesterday getting the last few pics for it, hence the sudden decision to move it from userspace where it has been languishing since last April. Yes, the church lists just sort of grew and grew...! You may have seen that I've done 6 of Sussex's 13 districts/boroughs now. The rest are on their way (eventually)... Eastbourne will be next, because it's the smallest (!). You probably spotted the proposed "List of RC churches in A&B" here as well...? Very early stages; I'm just playing about with the format and trying to add info where possible. Anyway, longer reply to come! Cheers, Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 23:19, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- And hi again! Thanks for the reminder message – as you probably guessed, real life overtook Wikipedia stuff and the bot that archives my talk page hid your message; sorry! Can't believe it's three weeks since I sent the above...?!?! Anyway, latest news from me Wikipedia-wise is that I have most recently been concentrating on Brighton and Hove stuff, as you may have seen; the church list and article writing you got me interested in mutated over time into an interest in listed buildings and architecture generally, hence my creation of various articles on those topics relating to the B&H area (actually, one is on Did You Know? as I write this). Then I started to cover Crawley, Mid Sussex, Worthing (where I work) and Adur districts/boroughs with church and listed building articles/lists. One thing I need to do w.r.t. Mid Sussex is write articles for all notable churches for List of places of worship in Mid Sussex; generally my criterion for this is listed = notable, otherwise do not write article, but some exceptions can be made. West Grinstead would certainly be a candidate to have an article written, as you say (even though it's not listed). This is a starting point architecture-wise. I'll add it to my "to-do" list (which is now frighteningly long). I will need it (and its picture ... summer would be a good time for a visit, perhaps?) for the proposed list of A&B churches I mentioned earlier as well, of course. Same for all the Surrey churches. I can't commit at this stage to doing any specific Surrey-related work beyond this, unfortunately, because of all the pending Sussex stuff I "need" to do first, but maybe in the future... I recently had a go at reinvigorating WP:WikiProject Brighton by tagging, grading etc. all relevant articles and doing some possible article templates; could try a similar thing for Surrey I suppose. As for church photos in A&B, I'll have to just pick off one or two here and there; it will be a slow process (by train and bus, and on foot if necessary). If you're ever on a wander in the vicinity of an A&B church, do take your camera with you! Anyway, this year may see some enforced slowdown on Wikipedia work (unfortunately: just when I have more and more to do) because I may be about to take on a larger role in one of my other hobbies, which if it comes about would result in my needing to research and write a major "piece" (ultimately for publication, which is nice). I will continue plugging away with new articles and photo sessions where possible though! I will now be away for the weekend in Scotland, but back on Tuesday to continue with more article-writing! Cheers, Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 19:00, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Really questionable CSD nominations
[edit]I've gone through and undone a number of your speedy deletion nominations, as they completely missed the point. Your personal distaste for Brandy Norwood does not in any fashion justify labeling Brandy: Special Delivery as "nonsense." A7's expansion specifically notes that it does not apply to schools, so labeling Grant County Middle School with A7 is improper. " ...designs, builds, operates and own power plants all over the world..." is certainly a credible claim of importance, so SEPCO3 can't go under A7. 山东电力第三工程公司 gets over a million Google hits, including the home page of a site that supports most of the claims in the article. Francky perez is a French entertainer, and his article certainly claims importance.
"Speedy" is supposed to describe the deletion process, not the nomination process. Slow down, read the nominated article, read the CSD category carefully, and only place nominations on articles where it reasonably applies.—Kww(talk) 02:56, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Tagging of In re Gateway Learning Corp.
[edit]I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on In re Gateway Learning Corp.. I do not think that In re Gateway Learning Corp. fits any of the speedy deletion criteria because the article is not about a company or organization, but rather about a filed action against that company, so it does not qualify for A7. I request that you consider not re-tagging In re Gateway Learning Corp. for speedy deletion without discussing the matter on the appropriate talk page. You are, of course, free to tag the article with {{prod}} or nominate it at WP:AFD. Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 01:59, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Surrey shield.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

Latest from me
[edit]Hello again! How do I manage it all ... good question – even my boss asks me! Haha... The secret is doing lots of preparation and research during "dead time", so I have everything ready to write an article quickly when I have time to do that. For example, I leave work at 5pm on Tuesdays and go to a pub quiz down in Hove ... but it doesn't start until much later in the evening. Fortunately, Hove library opens late on a Tuesday night – so there's an hour or more of research, taking out books etc. a week! Plus I can get quite a lot done on my daily commute, during lunch hours etc. This is how I can write an article so quickly (good example: Montpelier, Brighton, a huge recent article of mine, took less than 4 evenings of solid writing.) Also there is the motivation of knowing there are still so many more things to write articles on! Believe it or not, my "output" was actually quite significantly reduced for a few months because I was writing a lengthy "piece" for publication in real life, so to speak; I have recently finished it and the publishing process is now underway, so more chunks of time have become available. I expect my contributions to increase accordingly. A full rewrite of Brighton is high on the agenda! Cheers, Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 14:03, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
[edit]Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:10, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
