in friendship

Thank you for being around! - Happy new year, in friendship! - One of my pics was on the Main page, DYK, and even made it to the stats. - In this young year, I enjoyed meetings with friends in real life, and wish you many of those. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:57, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2022 began happily with vacation. I uploaded images but stopped at 22 January - click on songs. 30 January means 10 years of Precious. It's also the birthday of a friend, - I'm so happy I mentioned his DYK on his 90th birthday when he was still alive. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:35, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

sources in USS Johnston (DD-557)

[edit]

Thanks for your edits to USS Johnston (DD-557) to whip into shape – they are great improvements. Regarding the sources (particularly Morison), the 3 volumes you cite weren't all published in 1958, so there's no need for "date=1958a/1958b/1958c" disambiguators for {{sfn}} refs.

Also, the sources I moved to Further Reading were unreferenced, displaying Harv warnings. E.g.: "Harv warning: There is no link pointing to this citation. The anchor is named CITEREFMorison1958c." That is why I moved them to Further reading, since they aren't directly cited, and to prevent generation of those warnings.

If you're in the process of adding material that will eventually cite the currently-unreferenced cites, I'll happily hold off moving them for now. Regards, happy editing.  — sbb (talk) 19:57, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Sbb: I was unaware that History of United States Naval Operations in World War II wasn't all published in the same year, so that sort of perplexes me. As for the books I moved back into the general population, I am going to use them, don't worry. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 20:06, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the volumes were published over the course of I think 17 years. I'll fix up the Morison dates and references, and otherwise leave the endmatter organization alone. For now. ;-) Regards.  — sbb (talk) 20:09, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vami @Roniius: I finished going through the comments and w/ revisions to the article. Thank you for all the input and checks! Anything that I missed?

Separately, since you guys put in a lot of work into the article, would you like to be FA co-nominators? --K.e.coffman (talk) 13:18, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@K.e.coffman and Roniius: Let's do it. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 03:13, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I left Roniius a message; they have not edited since Jan 21, so it's unclear if they'd be back soon. Could they be a co-nominator in absentia? Not sure... :). What do you think? --K.e.coffman (talk) 15:53, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
He certainly can't co-nominate if he isn't editing Wikipedia at the moment. Up to you if you want wait on a definite response from him. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 16:28, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This makes sense; I left a follow-up message with a timeframe. I would proceed with a nomination in a week's time either way. --K.e.coffman (talk) 21:06, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Either way there are a couple cleanup tags such as "citation needed" and "page needed" which should be fixed before a FAC. (t · c) buidhe 02:53, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Buidhe: since we are all here, I'm continuing the discussion on this thread. I took care of the two issues. But I have a question about the two fair-use images in the article: File:Kurt_Meyer_and_Paul_Hausser_at_a_HIAG_convention.jpg and File:Der_Freiwillige_1959_cover.jpg. In your opinion, how likely are they to survive a potential FAC review? Please let me know your thoughts. --K.e.coffman (talk) 16:24, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For 1) I am not sure that it meets NFCC#8: "its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic". It just shows a group of men celebrating together. For 2) it could certainly be justified in the article about the magazine, but I don't think it works in this article because judging from the caption the main message could be and is conveyed through sourced text (NFCC#1). So I would axe both of them. (t · c) buidhe 16:59, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed both images. However, the article could still benefit from tightening prose in some places by reducing/paraphrasing quotes. (t · c) buidhe 21:24, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of WikiProject Nebraska to USS Nebraska

[edit]

Hello! I noticed that in May 2017, you added the WikiProject Nebraska template to USS Nebraska (BB-14). May I ask your reasoning for this? I don't see how that ship as anything to do with Nebraska outside of being named after the state. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:06, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That really was just the reasoning behind that addition. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 21:28, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. Well seeing as on other pages with ships that have a state name have the associated state's wikiproject on them I'll just mark it as low importance. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:31, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This state of affairs should likely exist for US cruisers, too, as they are named after American cities. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 22:08, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I've been making some copy edits to Wikipedia:Missing Wikipedians, and I noticed that back in March 2021 you added SloaneFrench to the list, who does not actually exist (the log doesn't show any renames). Are you sure this is their correct name? Maybe there were some missing character or diacritic. Thanks! Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 15:14, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

First, have an image of Alina Gorlova, whom you also wrote the article about. Second, I notice your creation comment for No Obvious Signs was "I shall not be sniped again" - did you mean you wanted to create the article before someone else did? Well, if so, on that note, I'd like to draw your attention to User:GRuban/Maria Berlinska which is an article I'm working on for the other person you mention in No Obvious Signs, so if you want to create that article, can we cooperate? Thanks. --GRuban (talk) 18:15, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be pleased to! Though, I don't know how useful I'll be as a monolingual American. Slava Ukraini. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 18:43, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, first, half the sources I'm finding so far are in English. Second, while I'm pretty good in Russian, for Ukrainian I mostly rely on Google/Bing translation. But third, despite a fair bit of searching, I found nothing about this No Obvious Signs thing until I searched on Wikipedia itself - while you obviously did! Though I'm getting a fair bit about The Invisible Battalion, I had no clue she did another film. So whatever you did to find that will be very very useful! Is there a third film or more? --GRuban (talk) 19:47, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose we'll find out! –♠Vami_IV†♠ 17:14, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your help! I think I'm done with adding stuff and moving things around in User:GRuban/Maria Berlinska. I'm going to write her again see what she has to say, but if she doesn't respond (I'm assuming she's rather busy - I was shocked than she responded when she did), I'm mostly ready to push it live. Could I ask you to look it over? You also did a great job writing the lead - I'm terrible with balancing the lead to summarize the article - and maybe it needs more massaging? --GRuban (talk) 13:36, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much! She just wrote with thanks, so I'm guessing she's happy, I massaged it a bit more and pushed it live: Maria Berlinska. Any ideas about a DYK hook? --GRuban (talk) 13:32, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know...

...that Ukrainians Maria Berlinska and Andriana Susak confronted a Russian diplomat while on tour for a documentary they co-produced?

...that Ukrainian activist military volunteer Maria Berlinska led the research and publication of three reports about women in the Ukrainian military? –♠Vami_IV†♠ 15:03, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removed pictures of sunk USS Johnston (DD-557)

[edit]

Hi, can you please clarify on the talk page of the ship why you keep removing the pictures of the sunken ship? They are CC-BY-SA so "copyright reasons" should't be an issue. Thank you. Byankuren (talk) 08:04, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Byankuren: There's a clarification at the ongoing A-class review. The photos are not actually CC-BY-SA because we aren't certain that the uploader was the holder of the images' copyrights. It is entirely possible that the uploader is in fact Victor Vescovo or does have that copyright (as they claim here), but they haven't verified either of those things. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 08:13, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Vami IV:, first of all I would like to thank you for uplevelling the article about USS Johnston to a Good Article status. For sure it was a lot of work. To some degree I was surprised that the three pictures depicting the wreck are no longer part of the article, to some degree I wasn´t. I was the one who inserted them in the gallery after the user Vlvescovo mentioned that he provided them via commons. I have read all related discussions about the identity of the user VIvescovo and his uploaded pictures and would like to ask you under what circumstances you are willing to reinsert the pictures. Should there be an additional review by OTRS team members? I have been trough all this because I wanted to have pictures of his submersible for the related article and it was everything but easy to get this finally done. But now the article about this sub does have some pictures in contrast to the one about James Camerons Deepsea Challenger where there is still just a drawing of it. In my opinion it would be nice for the readers to have the three pictures or at least one in the article about the Johnston, just to round up this much improved article. What do you think about this? Best regards Yeti-Hunter (talk) 10:37, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Vami IV:, I have asked the commons Volunteer Response Team whether some of them involved with previous conversations with Victor Vescovo regarding licences of other pictures are able to judge whether he is authorized to upload his pictures as his own work. You can contribute to this discussion overthere. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Volunteer_Response_Team/Noticeboard#Clarification_about_the_user_VIvescovo_and_his_rights_to_upload_pictures Best regards Yeti-Hunter (talk) 19:02, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would be very willing to have those photos back in the article if they satisfy whatever mechanisms we have for this. I don't do image copyright, so I don't know. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 18:32, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

May songs

I have the quirky DYK today, which is rare, and I don't quite know why music for peace was deemed quirky. If you look at the article, you'll see some ill links that you might be willing to fill with at least stubs, such as his church in Düsseldorf. Basilica of St. Severin, Cologne would be good for expansion ... - I took and picked the blue-and-yellow pic last year for May. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:30, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Today, thank you for Saline Valley salt tram, "about a defunct aerial tramway that operated in the mountainous desert of south-eastern California at various times in the 20th century. New CCI

[edit]

I'm back from my wikibreak. Would you have any interest in helping me polish off a new ACW CCI - Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Hary1mo? The images are all claimed to be own work or CC-by-SA 4.0, but are generally either obvious public domain or obvious copyright violations. Although there's some stuff where the source isn't clear that I'm leaning towards probably a violation, and then there's trickier ones like File:USS Peterhoff wreck.jpg that's claimed CC-by-SA 4.0 but is apparently a work of the North Carolina government. It might be necessary to call in a licensing expert for some of the trickier cases. Hog Farm Talk 23:09, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Of course. Perhaps Buidhe (talk) could help with these trickier case? –♠Vami_IV†♠ 23:16, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I think most of them can be figured out fairly easily, but some do look a bit trickier. I just tagged two more for speedy on Commons. Some of the articles are non-notable anyway; if you have any doubts about notability I have several books on related subjects and can check for coverage. Hog Farm Talk 23:31, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

question re possible roles

[edit]

Hi there. I am the Lead Coordinator at WikiProject History. we could use some experienced editors there, who have some knowledge of editing and of history-related topics, to serve as coordinators there. would you be at all interested? please feel free to let me know. please ping me if you reply. thanks!!! --Sm8900 (talk) 01:15, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Sm8900: Sure, why not? Can you tell me more about WP:HIST's goals, structures, and methodology? –♠Vami_IV†♠ 02:48, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
thanks so much! well, our goals right now are mainly to serve as a community forum and noticeboard, based simply on whatever topics editors might wish to discuss there. the wikiproject itself is not very active at all. I mainly have tried to format it to be a useful talk page and forum, and not much more than that. We are always open to input, ideas, and knowledgeable insights, from an editor with actual extensive experience with editing, or bringing artices to FA status, etc. I will let you know the next steps a little later. it's really good to hear your reply. feel free to write. thanks! Sm8900 (talk) 01:28, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
hi. Ok, let's move ahead with this. could you please go to the talk page at the main page for WikiProject History, open a new section, there, and then please: a) introduce yourself, b) mention that I asked you to please volunteer as a possible Coordinator for WikiProject History, and then c) mention some basic details about your editing experience, past editing accomplishments, relevant awards or milestones if you wish, and of course d) the details on your editing as it relates to history topics, which I know is pretty substantial. You can also of course add or include anything else you feel that you'd like to mention in your messsage there.
I will then comment on your message, and will indicate my support. we will allow a time period of about two weeks to allow anyone to comment who wishes to do so. the purpose of this procedure is to maintain some degree of structure for this process, as well as transparency. I anticipate that your candidacy should be approved with no dissent. I am sure the other editors will be glad to have your involvement there.
Just to be totally clear, I consider you an outstanding candidate for this role. our WikiProject will be lucky to have your involvement. your past awards, your past recognition received in various editing milestones, and your extensive involvement with a wide variety of history topics and areas, means you will have a variety of positive knowledge and experience to offer. I really appreciate your willingness to be involved in this way. looking forward to discussing possible ideas. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 21:21, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Palanga

[edit]

Thank you for passing by and rating the article! I can see that it didn't pass on the "Coverage and accuracy" criteria—reasonably covers the topic, and does not contain obvious omissions or inaccuracies; I'd like to see if I can improve the article in any way. Is there any sources that you would like to see included, that conflicts with the current information? Imonoz (talk) 21:11, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about sources, since this is out of my area of familiarity (you might ask User:Auntieruth55), but an order of battle would make this a B-class. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 01:34, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for improving articles in June! My song collection is especially rich, look, and the hall where I first heard DFD, Pierre Boulez and Murray Perahia. Do you find the baby deer in the meadow (last row)? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:16, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I was struck by this and the contrast between the flowers and songs and the horrible things described in my TFA blurb. My new FAC co-nom about an old towboat at least conjures up music in my mind, but I'm not sure how popular "towboat picking up barges / on a long hot summer day" (courtesy Hartford and Felker) is around here. Note re ideas

[edit]

hi. I have some ideas that I would like to discuss with you. would you be willing to communicate off-wiki? the reason I am asking that is that for some topics, I find it easier to discuss via a threaded messsaging app, such as WhatsApp. Also, if you are willing, perhaps we could speak by phone? we can keep it brief if you want; but I simply have some ideas to discuss, which might be easier to discuss if we actually speak by phone. if you prefer not to, that's totally fine. feel free to let me know whatever method(s) you might be okay with. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 00:28, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in the unofficial WikiMedia community Discord server, if that works for you. If not, I can look into WhatsApp or just email you a phone number (I would also prefer the latter if Discord doesn't work). –♠Vami_IV†♠ 01:11, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. well, actually, yes, I don;t really find DIscord that helpful. it would better if you could please email me your phone number, if that feels okay for you. I will send you an email, to get the process started, if that is helpful. thanks!! Sm8900 (talk) 02:26, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can't do a whole lot with anything written now with a badly cracked computer screen. But from a quick glance of the Watie article, I don't think File:Polson Cemetery, Historical Marker for Stand Watie (Degataga Oo-Watee).JPG is usable. No freedom of panorama in USA and it was apparently erected by a state historical society in 1971, so it's not federal government PD and not old enough for PD. Any thoughts on this image's licensing? Bolivar

[edit]

I have been following your remarkable work on Boliver for some time, bravo! It seems like you are on the home stretch with his life, though I assume the legacy section will take some time.

Re this; I added the notes subheading as I assumed it had been forgotten. If your intention was/is to minimize the sub-headers for that section, then perhaps returning to "References" above "Citations" and "Bibliography" makes more sense, given that the current format has the "Bibliography" as part of the "Notes" section, which is rather odd. Aza24 (talk) 08:43, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have renamed the sections as you suggested. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 03:56, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies, I wasn't very clear, I meant that if you preferred not to have three subheadings, I would just keep the formatting how it was before I touched the article. Best – Aza24 (talk) 06:01, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think I might be confused? I hadn't forgotten a subheading; I just hate having section headers directly below each other, with no separation. It's always struck me as a waste of space. The headers I was using, however, could have used improvement, and I think they are much improved now with your prodding. I've never been an academic and as such have been misusing the word "citation" for years. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 06:29, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Correction to previous election announcement

[edit]

Just a quick correction to the prior message about the 2022 MILHIST coordinator election! I (Hog Farm) didn't proofread the message well enough and left out a link to the election page itself in this message. The voting will occur here; sorry about the need for a second message and the inadvertent omission from the prior one. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:42, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

links? Unnecessarily (talk) 21:27, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I will read them with an open mind, I found the book quite neutral, and the section in question is factual and opinion free. I will be surprised to find that it is incorrect. Unnecessarily (talk) 21:39, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As it turns out, I had misremembered. I mistook de Bruyne's work for a biography of Degrelle published in the Netherlands in 2015 or thereabouts. I eliminated de Bruyne because I could not find a copy of it when I was writing the article. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 21:43, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Clarified. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 21:59, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Also, are you saying that all wiki pages that show awards should have them removed? This page is about a military officer, his awards are fairly relevant! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Unnecessarily (talkcontribs) 20:46, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes; they're inappropriate and actually not all that relevant. I mentioned when Degrelle won notable awards like the Iron Cross in the regular prose anyway. There is no need for a big list, independent of the rest of the article, that screams "hey check out how cool this Nazi guy was!". –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 20:50, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So you would have no problem going to The George Patton page and deleting the awards section then? Unnecessarily (talk) 21:28, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Patton's article tellingly does not include an Awards section. And if it did, I would not have a problem removing it and then discussing its removal per WP:BRD. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 21:37, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgy_Zhukov Unnecessarily (talk) 22:26, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gah, of course. That'll have to go, too. Absolutely needless. A complete, Good or Featured Article on Zhukov would not have that list and instead mention important awards as they come up in the prose. See Walter Krueger or Alan McNicoll as examples without subsections for awards. I guess if I'm bringing up Featureds as examples though, there's Douglas MacArthur#Honors and awards (but then he's MacArthur) or Lionel Matthews as a bad example (especially as it may break our guidelines for non-free content. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 22:37, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I use wiki for information.....facts and data, I am capable of deciding by myself which I consume. I don't need to read an article that has being throttled because of editors preferences of what should be seen. The users are not children that need to have basic facts censored, they can make their own minds up. This denial of knowledge is not a good thing!

Indeed, readers can make their own minds up. If they really want to know all the awards Degrelle won, they can search that up somewhere else. But the inclusion of a list of his awards, or any soldier's, is unencyclopedic. Especially if the sources for that list include titles like "Loyalty was their Honor!", which is an almost word-for-word quotataion of the Waffen-SS's motto. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 21:42, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"they can search that up somewhere else."
yes but this is where people look stuff up! I don't see the downside of a list of awards....if I am looking up a person, I want that information there, so I can decide if it is relevant to me or not. In the case case of Degrelle, his awards are public knowledge, but why would you want to drive people away by restricting the information that is allowed, or worse, driving them to sites that are far worse than wiki. Unnecessarily (talk) 22:04, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The information is already in the article: In May [1942], he was made an officer and awarded the Iron Cross, First Class, for his conduct in battle. [...] On 20 February [1944], Degrelle was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross by Hitler.

The reason a separate section (or worse) for awards is a bad idea is threefold: it's unnecessary and just takes up space; it needlessly adds to the size of an article; and it becomes a sort of altar to that person and to the idea of military glory. That is not a thing that needs to be promoted, and the trend on-wiki has been to remove them in favor of mentioning noteworthy commendations in the prose and listing prominent awards in the infobox. Degrelle's article does both. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 22:17, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know... in my heart it feels like censorship. Unnecessarily (talk) 22:39, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
IMO it does not matter that he was a Nazi, what matters is that the awards are not the primary or even secondary reason for his notability. For a counter example, some Olympic athletes are indeed notable for the awards they received, and I wouldn't remove Oksana_Chusovitina#Competitive_history (although the next two sections of that article feel pretty crufty). Because it's not relevant to the notability, it is more like trivia that is generally not encyclopedic. (t · c) buidhe 04:05, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The politics are irrelevant to me, although I know well that many people see only through the political lens! I see no difference between the soldier and the athlete, if I look up either, I am doing so to find out information about them. I do not want or need others to decide which information is worth me seeing. I have the ability to figure that out myself.
The fact that Vami deleted the Awards of Degrelle, but put a request in to delete the awards of Patton, and has left Zhukovs awards untouched lets me know that Wiki NPOV policy it not worth the virtual paper it is written on. Shame on those who censor and push their own agenda and narrative
Just show the facts...all the facts...trust that the readers can decide for themselves when to stop reading. They are not children, and do not need to be guided into thinking the correct way. Unnecessarily (talk) 07:02, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I do not want or need others to decide which information is worth me seeing. I have the ability to figure that out myself. It's impossible to avoid this because Wikipedia articles are of finite length. In order to remain useful to our viewers and not sprawl out to an unreadable length, some content will have to be left out and the bigger the topic is the tighter the summary has to be. (t · c) buidhe 07:06, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vami, I think it is unfair to Misters de Bruyne & Rikmeenspoel, that your note that their book has been "assessed as less than reliable" still stands. Can you fix this please. Unnecessarily (talk)11:43, 18 September 2022 (UTC) — Preceding undated comment added 11:43, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot modify edit summaries. If it will suffice, I checked some of my sources again and Eddy de Bruyne, at least, is a reliable author (Martin Conway cites his French-language work a few times in his book about Rex and Degrelle). Rikmeenspoel appears to be another Gordon Williamson (writer), though. I'd be happy to learn that that isn't the case, but I had a look at his works and one of them is a translation of a Waffen-SS memoir while the other is a book-size listicle of Knight's Cross winners. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 20:01, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think that condemning an author because you do not like his chosen subject field show a lack of neutrality. Unnecessarily (talk) 21:04, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

sawmill fire

[edit]

hello, Vami IV! i had a quick question regarding this article and the associated blurb. tannerite appears to be a brand name. should it be capitalized in the blurb and article? i am not sure if it is being used as a genericized trademark, but the cited cnn source capitalizes it, and this npr source seems to focus on it being a brand. dying (talk) 04:19, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It had escaped me that Tannerite is a brand, but that was because the word "tannerite" has become quick shorthand for Tannerite-like explosive powders. That is why I rendered it in lower-case in the article and blurb. I do not know for sure if it was Tannerite tannerite in that target in April 2017 (though I guess those sources imply it was the genuine article), but it is moot anyway. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 05:00, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
are you saying that "tannerite" is generally accepted as a genericized trademark? i am admittedly not familiar with the substance, which is why i found it unusual when i noticed that many of the sources on the fire, as well as wikipedia's own article on the explosive, generally capitalized the brand name. this discrepancy is why i wanted to check with you regarding whether its use as a generic term was proper.
i think "aspirin" has been genericized to the point that using it uncapitalized on the main page should not be an issue. however, i also know that "coke" is used as a generic term for a soft drink in some varieties of english, but i cannot recall ever coming across such a use of "coke" on wikipedia (aside from, of course, in the discussion of its use as a generic term). also, i noticed that the tannerite web site seems to be trying to protect their brand name, with registered trademark symbols liberally used throughout.
in any case, i will defer to your judgement on the issue. thanks, Vami IV! dying (talk) 08:08, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
