Executiones
[edit]So the Category:Executioners by nationality has at least 14 of its 19 sub-cats with less than 3 articles. I am not sure we need to subdivide it by nationality at all. The category Czech executioners is one we really ought to scrap. The one article is on a person who was an executioner for the Kingdom of Bohemia when it was under the rule of the Habsburgs. He is already in 17th-century Bohemian people, so just upmerging to executioners would probably be the best solution in this case. The largest Category is English executioners with 33 entries (all 4 articles in the sub-cat are in the parent cat). Although the Soviet with maybe 28 articles between the parent and the 2 nested sub-cats (I did not check for overlap) and the American with 18 might be Wirth keeping. Only the German with 9 seems worth keeping beyond that. However it is an odd mix of Nazi war criminals and government executioners under the Kingdom of Prussia, so considering executioners are agents of the state it may be unwisely conflating unlike things.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:29, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Hope you're doing okay (re. the ArbCom case)
[edit]Hi! When I emailed ArbCom with the relevant diff, I didn't want it to be public at first since I wasn't sure if you were okay with being put in the spotlight and having this event brought up again. While CaptainEek did email you, I thought it could still be good to make sure the whole situation isn't being too uncomfortable for you. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 16:18, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for checking in! I'm doing really well. It's really validating to see the community saying, yep that is indeed creepy and shouldn't be acceptable. SMasonGarrison 16:21, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
Banner suggestions & Q
[edit]Regarding Category:19th-century Greek sportsmen,
|living=no
is not needed/wanted on cats - there are no visual/categorization changes to the page with or without it, and|category=y
is being used incorrectly -|category=
should only be set tono
for demonstration or testing purposes to remove automatic categorization (incidentally,|category=
was recently removed from {{WikiProject Biography}}).
Regarding {{WikiProject Men's Issues}}, are we tagging all men cats with that, or only if a corresponding women cat exists, or some other criteria? ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 14:13, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks! So for context, I think that these might be the default in awb for the kingbot plugin. Honestly, regarding men's issues, I haven't thought deeply about it, so we should probably check out the project to see what active folks over there have been doning. Attitudes
[edit]I just have a comment about a comment about a comment, and I trust that you will sort of understand. I read the comment that says that men the age of Tony (which I am) sometimes don't view women as their equals. I was raised by two World War Two veterans, and my father demanded that women be treated with respect, because his father had demanded that women be treated with respect. I associated with and dated women who demanded to be treated as equals, because they were equals. But it occurs to me that a quantitative psychologist would know better than almost anyone else what percentage of men that age have regressive attitudes about women. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:03, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- I appreciate your comment about a comment about a comment. :) And I think that it's attitudes like yours (and your father's, mother's etc) that are why we can have this kind of conversation on Wikipedia at all. The fact is that I'm feeling extremely supported by folks of all generations and genders. (My academic advisor is about Tony's age, and has been just wonderfully supportive in my career. So rest assured, I know that Tony's anomaly.) SMasonGarrison 21:24, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

- @Liz: It is not about occupation, but about the declared level of knowledge. Yes there is connection, when someone if aggressively editing in the area they demonstrably have no knowledge. Putting a Soviet cosmonaut into a category of Russian Empire (!) and then edit warring is unbecoming of an assistant professor. I can take it easy on a teenager and patiently explain their errors, but a professor should have known better and be ashamed of aggressive edit warring. Category:Weather radar pioneers
[edit]I do not understand your edition. Since Category:Weather radar pioneers is a subcategory of Category:Radar pioneers which is already into Category:Pioneers by field why had Category:Weather radar pioneers into Category:Pioneers by field?

Winifred Reuning
[edit]Hi Mason - thanks for reviewing the page I created, Winifred Reuning. I see she has been categorized as an explorer, but I don't think that's correct, and it's not reflected in the page. She was a long-time writer and editor, and had a glacier named after her, but did not "explore" Antarctica as far as I'm aware. Blackballnz (talk) 03:05, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Would she be a better fit for People of Antarctica? SMasonGarrison 03:15, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Overcategorization
[edit]Hello, Mason,
I think we have a problem with overcategorization with editor User:KinoFan2021 who has a focus on creating new categories for screenwriters who have some connection to Disney films. I think one article had a dozen screenwriter categories on it which seems excessive. I'm not sure if you do much work with film categories but if you could review his recent contributions, I think that would be helpful. Thanks for any assistance you can provide here. Liz Read! Talk! 06:40, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'll check it out SMasonGarrison 12:43, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yep, this is definitely a classic case of overcat. SMasonGarrison 12:49, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
- I was looking at Category:Films with screenplays by American writers and I definitely think that this category could be pruned. There are other categories that KinoFan2021 made before their category creations were noticed. I think we should have a general rule (I think it's true for musicians) that there is no category for a writer's work if we don't have an article for the writer that would establish notability. I've already emptied some of the categories but they are easy to find because most of them just have one article in the category. What do you think? Should they be done manually or go through CFD? Liz Read! Talk! 03:50, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah -- I agree it's filled with a ton of tiny categories often with one or two pages. I think that the same logic can be applied as when I nominated a ton of family categories that had like one or two people in them. The categories weren't helpful for navigation. I think we should probably nominate a few test cases to get a sense of the community's feeling; just in case there's something obvious that we're both missing. SMasonGarrison 03:59, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

Religious worker categories
[edit]Hello, Mason,
I just did a query to find empty categories and I found lot of categories you recently created for religious workers from different countries. Will you be filling these in the near future? I don't want to tag them if you are still working on a project. I'd wait any way but I thought I'd check. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 21:22, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for checking! I'm working on filling them in -- actually right now. :) SMasonGarrison 21:24, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

- Lol usually true -- but I've definitely forgotten to populate a category after I've created it. So it's totally reasonable thing to tag them if they've been around for a day or so. It's a helpful reminder! SMasonGarrison 22:46, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
