Newsletters and navboxes and categories, oh my! ;-)

Great work on the project; if you need help with anything, please don't hesitate to ask! Kirill Lokshin 22:42, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hehe... We just keep shamelessly stealing stuff from you guys... so I guess I would ask that you keep doing good/neat stuff on WP:MILHIST so we have more stuff to steal! ++Lar: t/c 22:50, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mmm, it might be worthwhile for you to keep up to date on our newsletter, then, since that mentions (most of) the things we're considering doing in the near future. Maybe there'll be some more ideas you could adopt :-) Kirill Lokshin 22:53, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can I subscribe to it without being on the project membership list? ++Lar: t/c 23:00, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you're fine with getting the full version, you can just add your name to the list here; that might be easier for you to keep track of. Kirill Lokshin 23:18, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I hacked in a new category. I also added myself to the memberlist... probably don't need both, I guess... LMK which you'd prefer. ++Lar: t/c 23:54, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
New category is fine, and is probably the better way of doing this; I'll go ahead and take your name off the main member list, then. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with. Kirill Lokshin 00:04, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think we're square. Thanks again! ++Lar: t/c 00:10, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your upcoming RFA

[edit]

Hmm, you might want to delay putting it up by a day or two--wouldn't want to have it coincide with May 1, 2006 or anything. Good luck when it comes! Matt Yeager (Talk?) 23:46, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did not even know about that. But it depends on whether my third co-nom turns up tomorrow or Tuesday. When she turns up and fills out her bit, it goes, May day or not! Thanks for the good luck wish, but I'm hoping I won't need luck, we'll see! ++Lar: t/c 23:53, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, you hit 100 supports! Congratulations. Tijuana Brass¡Épa!-E@ 03:35, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ya, how about that! Thanks for the congrats... The support from my colleagues is gratifying and a bit scary actually (expectations to live up to)but very welcome. ++Lar: t/c 03:54, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there!

[edit]

Yo, just dropping by to wish you good luck on your RFA; mine didn't pass, mostly because people ran in and dropped off a vote without reading the previous stuff (not that I'm complaining though :P); hope yours goes better, though! :D _-M o P-_ 17:44, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My condolences, I thought you made a fine candidate as I said at the time. I think you should try again after an appropriate interval... thanks for your wishes! ++Lar: t/c 17:57, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A landslide victory for The JPS (aka RFA thanks)

[edit]
Hey, Lar/Archive 6, thank you so much for your vote and comments in my RfA, which passed with an overwhelming consensus of 95/2/2. I was very surprised and flattered that the community has entrusted me with these lovely new toys. I ripped open the box and started playing with them as soon as I got them, and I've already had the pleasure of deleting random nonsense/attacks/copyvios tonight.
If I ever do anything wrong, or can help in some way, please feel free to drop me a line on my talk page, and I will do my best to correct my mistake, or whatever...
Now, to that bottle of wine waiting for me...

DYK

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Teresa Bagioli Sickles, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Dear Lar/Archive 6,

Thanks for voting on my RFA! I appreciate your faith in me, and was overwhelmed by the positive response to my RFA; for it shows that at least I'm doing something right. :) I've started working to improve myself already, and I hope that next time, things run better, and maybe, just maybe, one day we can bask on the shores of Admintopia together. Thanks and cheers, _-M o P-_ 20:52, Saturday, December 7, 2024 (UTC)

I just made it smarter...indeed when I ran it for you on RfA, it was much simplier, and the "sig" edits was not looking very rigorously. Amazon / AMAZON.COM

Why not bring it up on the talk page of the article? I'll take a look if I get a chance. Meanwhile, review WP:WEB, WP:N and WP:V if you get a chance.... ++Lar: t/c 18:24, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Lar/Archive 6, and thank you for vote on my recent RfA! With a final vote of 62/2/4, I have now been entrusted with the mop, bucket and keys. Show/hide divs

[edit]

Where'd you learn about those show/hide divs? J. Finkelstein 17:56, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen them around... the WP:MILHIST newsletter uses them, I've seen them on user pages like User:Aaron Brenneman and elsewhere. I forget where first though, sorry. Hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 18:01, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Popups

[edit]

Hi Lar. I've seen a few edit summaries where Popups was used to disambiguate links. I've not worked out how to use the tool for that particular job - do you know how? Cheers. --kingboyk 17:01, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fraid not, mate... I've never done it. I'd ask on Lupin's page for the popups toolset. When I mouse over a link I'm not seeing anything that looks like "dab" in the menu so... dunno. ++Lar: t/c 17:13, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

[edit]
The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.
Signed...

Still looks a bit dodgy to me. Any contribution here should be licenced under the GFDL and without any conditions. I also wonder if that info is not already available in another article somewhere. I'm not exactly sure what is being asked here, either. Sorry! I looked at the Amazon.com article, and made some changes, including putting the NYT ref back in. Please take a look at the history or diffs: [1] to see what I did and if it does not address the concern, please take it up on the talk page for the article. That is usually the best approach, keep article related issues on the article where everyone interested can see them and comment. ++Lar: t/c 14:03, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations

[edit]
Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Dear all

[edit]

Thank you all for your kind words. I REALLY appreciate your support and advice and counsel. I will be thanking each commentor in my RfA individually. This is just thanks for the congrats here. I need to get caught up on work a bit though so I may not be quite as active for a day or two but this will be a short break. Can't stay away.. !!!!! ++Lar: t/c 23:53, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In all seriousness now, congratulations! I look forward to working with you even more. Before you get too involved with adminship though - and once your real life issues are resolved - could we get the WP:TBA classification table rolled out? Just a gentle reminder, no pressure. :) --kingboyk 14:31, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's first on my list of things to do!!! I want to get the tool to the point where I can offer it (the service of creating these tables) to other projects, before I send out my thank yous, because I want to advert that in my thank yous. So ya. If it wasn't for needing to merge existing ones in I would be done!!!! I could crank out a table now but it would have dups with what we've done already. ++Lar: t/c 14:37, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic! When you have a moment, you might want to look at Apple Corps v. Apple Computer. I've forked it out from the Apple Computer litigation article. I think it works well as a standalone piece. --kingboyk 17:23, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

monobook

[edit]

I did some debugging and clean up for your monobook. The history thing seems to work OK, for now. The "since" tab no longer does nothing. Nevertheless you have heavy tab spillage (the user talk edit mode has tabs bleeding waaaayyy out). Do you want me to fix that (by abbreviating the others)? Oh...and cograts with the adminning. Also, I kinda like that quick live preview, I'll be sure to integrate it into my shared admin script file.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 21:36, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey thanks! I run 1600x1200 resolution so I don't get as much tab bleed.... not any at all, actually... (well, now i do... I have more tabs all of a sudden). I think I can do some abbreviating on my own though. How did you test MY monobook though? copy it to yours? very thoughtful and much appreciated. ++Lar: t/c 23:43, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah...I run 1028x1024, but my fonts are scaled up. At any rate I hope the since tab does what you want, as looking at the code, I was guessing at what it was trying (but failing) to do. After I recoded the last part of it, it should now give the diff of everything past your last edit. Now I'll have to debug Kingboy's monobook soon.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 14:31, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Opps...I forgot to say that I removed the force summary code...this was implemented into MediaWiki a while back and can be turned on in your preferences window, so no need for script.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 14:53, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot about that... thanks! ++Lar: t/c 14:57, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I may have to revert. Lupin's popups (which I cannot live without) seem to have stopped working. I noticed a lot of removal I have to look at more closely. I do really appreciate the help though! And don't feel you have to fix everything, a user's monobook theoretically is their own responsibility. You've been far more kind than anyone has a right to ask for. ++Lar: t/c 17:15, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look into the popups issue. I like javascript and debugging :).Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 16:26, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to be OK, maybe beceause you swiched to regular popups.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 16:31, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm the Brent Dax from Megatokyo. (As far as I know I'm the only Brent Dax on the Internet; certainly everything Google turns up has to do with me.)

Some of the early material in that article is from Wikitokyo, although it's seen a lot of refinement at the hands of Wikipedians. My dear Larry

[edit]

My dear Larry, sorry about the delay, but I simply couldn't live without saying CONGRATULATIONS, Mr. Admin! We have all won, for now we have an admin who truly understands the value of kindness and Wikilove. I'll msg you again this weekend - I'm most of the time at the station this month, meaning I can manage to do quite a lot of quick reverts... but not actually writing. Tight hugzzz! Phaedriel tell me - 22:13, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dearest Phaedriel: Why thank you! You were in no small part the reason I decided to stand... your many kindnesses are an inspiration to us all... Here's hoping you have some fun editing in a thing or two. And when will YOU be standing? I know there's a big queue to nominate you. All the best (hugs back) ++Lar: t/c 22:20, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You give me too much credit, Larry - it was you the community voted, not your nominators ;) Regarding me, well... I dunno, maybe in a month or so I'll throw myself to the lions... I'll let you know ;)
In whole truth, I find it very hard to keep on trying to cheer everyone up as I used to... is it me, or the general mood has gone pretty ugly while I've been away? Users dropping out of the project like flies, and even Esperanza in crisis... I am somewhat exhausted, which may also be the reason why I'm mostly focusing on janitorial tasks and writing new articles lately, instead of spending all of my time interacting like I used to. Fortunately, good friends like you, Kingboy, Aaron Brenneman and a handful remain here - otherwise I think I might have never returned from exile... Phaedriel tell me - 22:37, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ack, don't say that! The part about not returning, not the part about Larry not appreciating himself enough (that's correct). You are much appreciated, and if you go, the place will be far bleaker. KillerChihuahua?!? 23:21, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ack indeed. The thing to do is to edit articles. All the rest is a swirl but doing some good articles really can rejuvenate oneself I think. Howeer in the final analysis you have to do what is right for you, whatever that may be. The project is bigger than any one of us and there are always wonderful people joining. Different aspects may go through rocky patches, that is just the nature of things... but the project will endure. IMHO anyway. Still, it would not be the same without you. (or any of us. Each of us adds something) ++Lar: t/c 00:21, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree. I can't say I've noticed any general decline. I've seen lots of nice new people joining up, and I've probably been too busy working on articles to notice anyway :) And, Sharon, please don't feel it is your duty to cheer everyone up! Your natural kindness and warmth is quite enough, don't turn it into an obligation and make yourself unhappy over some (incorrect) perceived failing OK? :) Great to have you back! --kingboyk 12:30, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Now I remember why I like the three of you so much, guys... I reckon this is what friends are for ;) Thanks for your great advices, Larry, KC & Steve! Mwah! Phaedriel tell me - 22:10, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK update process, only 1/2 done

[edit]

Hi Lar. I don't want to appear too pushy, but is there any particular reason you only rotated half of the entries on the DYK template? Regards, ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! - review me 02:47, 12 May 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Because I'm not really sure what I am doing and rather than bollix the WHOLE thing up... (grin)... I'll do a whole rotate next time I do it... I am still trying to get the hang of this (and in fact am still putting notices on pages and etc). If it bothers you feel free to rotate the other half out too, I don't mind. (actually there were 5, I pulled 2 and added 3 because there was room).... ++Lar: t/c 02:50, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lar, thanks for your comments on the discussion on Irish constituency names, on the Category talk:Parliamentary constituencies in the Republic of Ireland. I thought that you might be intersted to know that I have posted a lengthy (maybe over-lengthy!) reply to the discussion, at Category talk:Parliamentary constituencies in the Republic of Ireland#The_case_for_a_consistent_naming_format. --BrownHairedGirl 14:08, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It looks to me like that discussion is percolating along nicely without me... I'll be happy to help move things if and when but it may be too estoteric for me after all... ++Lar: t/c 02:29, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

why do you hate me

[edit]

Why? Why? Why do you hate me? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Yagrebu roevert (talkcontribs) 22:12, 12 May 2006).

Um, I don't hate you! I just happened to delete something that wasn't appropriate to the encyclopedia. Please don't vandalise my user page either, ok? With over a million articles there's plenty of notable stuff to write about. ++Lar: t/c 02:17, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of SpongeBob SquarePants episodes Semiprotection request

[edit]

Voice of All said on the Requests for Protection that the List of SpongeBob SquarePants episode was going to be protected. ForestH2

So I see. I've semiprotected it but will not leave it that way indefinitely. ++Lar: t/c 03:01, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh no. I just wanted it there for about a couple days (maybe a week) In fact, I don't think I want any pages protected indefinitely however I guess some have to. ForestH2

I wouldn't have asked about this if Voice of All had said just keep reverting. ForestH2

Come on!

Now what could you possibly have against the classical discipline of Ice-cream-truck studies? What!?? Red link?? Excuse me, I gotta go work on something for WP:DYK... —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 03:28, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ya, you get right on that, won't you? I'd be PROUD to leave you a DYKbox because after all, what have you written lately? ++Lar: t/c 03:32, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA Question Answered

[edit]

Hi Lar,

Thanks very much for the excellent question, which helped me to clarify my own thoughts on the matter. Best wishes, Xoloz 09:35, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And thank you in turn for your very thoughtful response. I look forward to working with you further. ++Lar: t/c 12:23, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hugs all around! May I say, without too much hyperbole that having you to both as admins is the best thing since sliced bread.
brenneman{L} 13:20, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(checks wallet) Thanks! Now, what brought THAT on? Still feeling sheepish about NOT SUPPORTING my RfA ??? Grin. ++Lar: t/c 13:37, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CSD T1 Comment

[edit]

Greetings! I've added a fairly lengthly comment on the CSD talk page, which I'd like your opinion on, as a fellow process fan :) It suggests (I hope!) a possible way of getting where we both want (user POV out of template space), but by a less extreme method (albeit less fast) than adding them to the speedy criteria. (Note added here, as it's way too easy to miss comments on such a busy page! All the best, MartinRe 11:56, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up... I'll give it a look later today (in between flights as I do this.. wanna see if I can crank a DYK update... (well, no, too risky to do in 20 min and then be off wiki for 2 hours)) I gave it a quick peek and I can't respond quickly. I do think you're making major contributions to the discussion, and really appreciate it. We process wonks must stick together. ++Lar: t/c 12:22, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, and thanks for the appreciation :) I don't think I'm a process wonk, but I do believe that it's as important for policy to be seen being applied as it is for the end result to be policy compliant. If anything, I'm a "quote wonk", my user page has just some of them! Cheers, MartinRe 12:27, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Update

[edit]

I was just about to protect Image:ATSF Scott Special 1905.jpg to update DYK, and I see that you beat me to it. I'll let you carry on Lar, will be interested to see your choices. Obviously our #1 item matched pretty well. Happy updating ... baaaa. --Cactus.man 12:56, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just read the thread above and, with 45 mins since your last edit, it seems like you are in between locations, so I will usurp the updating process. Hope you don't mind. --Cactus.man 13:12, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was in DTW... had about 1/2 hour before my flight..., thought I'd try to run an update but wasn't time. Now I'm home in GRR. I have no problem with you doing one!!!! Not at all. (And the one you did looks great.. we're actually running low-ish on articles now!) I'll try to get the next one later today if I can, though, as I want the practice. ++Lar: t/c 14:38, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Smolensk

[edit]

Thanks for your kind words on Battle of Smolensk (1943). Incidentally, I listed it for GA nomination, so you're welcome to rate it... :) -- Grafikm (AutoGRAF) 23:52, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the nomination for DYK and the kind words on the article. Regards Mick Knapton 06:55, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hi, i see that the "good article" spam has been put back in Template:featured despite objections from several users. this seems to be the way the GA project works: boldly putting something into a page that doesnt want it, then claiming consensus is required to *remove* it again (consensus is never required to put it there in the first place).

this is exactly the same behaviour as witnessed on the attempt to create an article space "good article" star, which i & raul654 finally managed to have deleted (a huge effort since they had already spammed a 1000 articles with it), and on the Community Portal where this non-policy wikiproject has pride of place - its apparently far more important than any of the other dozens of collaborations!

they even had the cheek to remove the "non-policy process" template from the top of their project pages claiming they now had "enough support to be policy" - this is despite clear consensus on the talk page that its NOT policy. an attempt to put it back was quickly removed.

i would appreciate any comments on the template's talk page. i'm really fed up with fighting these GA spam battles everywhere, its quite tiring. why do they have to constantly spread their GA spam everywhere? hope you can help! Zzzzz 09:45, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA thanks

[edit]
Dear Lar — Thank you for your support on my recent RfA. It succeeded with a final tally of 72/2/0 and I am now an administrator. I'll be taking things slowly at first and getting used to the new tools, but please let me know if there's any adminnery I can help you with in the future. I shall endeavour to do some talking in Portal space too. —Whouk (talk) 18:09, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your code

[edit]

Hi Lar, not sure if you have this page watchlisted or not - Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Work via Wikiprojects - but I'd suggest you add it if not. Looks like there might be some progress on Wikipedia 1.0, and news of a bot. It would be a shame if our tables weren't readable by the bot. (I've already asked them to either support our table format, or let us know what changes should be made). No reply needed as it's just a headsup. --kingboyk 19:43, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been watching it, ya... I feel like we're diverging farther and farther away and I have not yet cracked the "merge old back into new" problem. Not sure what to do about it. Are you ever on IRC? maybe we should talk faster than mailing or talk messaging would allow. ++Lar: t/c 21:08, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't use IRC and I think it's blocked our firewall (or, at least, I couldn't get it to work when I tried to sign in a few weeks ago, when Wikipedia was down for quite a few hours). I do however have MSN and Yahoo messengers. Email me if you want to know my IDs. --kingboyk 13:20, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK!!!!

[edit]
Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Hell Below, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Yes, I am congratulating myself. Deal! Smile. ++Lar: t/c 21:57, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
