Please participate to the talk pages consultation

Hello

Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.

We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.

We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

This was a spin-off from WikiProject Portals, for the purpose of developing zero-page portals (portals generated on-the-screen at the push of a button, with no stored pages).

It has been merged back into WikiProject Portals. In the MfD the vote was "demote". See Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject Quantum portals.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #031, 01 May 2019

Back to the drawing board

Implementation of the new portal design has been culled back almost completely, and the cull is still ongoing. The cull has also affected portals that existed before the development of the automated design.

Some of the reasons for the purge are:

  • Portals receive insufficient traffic, making it a waste of editor resources to maintain them, especially for narrow-scope or "micro" portals
  • The default {{bpsp}} portals are redundant with the corresponding articles, being based primarily on the corresponding navigation footer displayed on each of those articles, and therefore not worth separate pages to do so
  • They were mass created

Most of the deletions have been made without prejudice to recreation of curated portals, so that approval does not need to be sought at Deletion Review in those cases.

In addition to new portals being deleted, most of the portals that were converted to an automated design have been reverted.

Which puts us back to portals with manually selected content, that need to be maintained by hand, for the most part, for the time being, and back facing some of the same problems we had when we were at this crossroads before:

  • Manually maintained portals are not scalable (they are labor intensive, and there aren't very many editors available to maintain them)
  • The builders/maintainers tend to eventually abandon them
  • Untended handcrafted portals go stale and fall into disrepair over time

These and other concepts require further discussion. See you at WT:POG.

However, after the purge/reversion is completed, some of the single-page portals might be left, due to having acceptable characteristics (their design varied some). If so, then those could possibly be used as a model to convert and/or build more, after the discussions on portal creation and design guidelines have reached a community consensus on what is and is not acceptable for a portal.

See you at WT:POG.

Curation

A major theme in the deletion discussions was the need for portals to be curated, that is, each one having a dedicated maintainer.

There are currently around 100 curated portals. Based on the predominant reasoning at MfD, it seems likely that all the other portals may be subject to deletion.

See you at WT:POG.

Traffic

An observation and argument that arose again and again during the WP:ENDPORTALS RfC and the ongoing deletion drive of {{bpsp}} default portals, was that portals simply do not get much traffic. Typically, they get a tiny fraction of what the corresponding like-titled articles get.

And while this isn't generally considered a good rationale for creation or deletion of articles, portals are not articles, and portal critics insist that traffic is a key factor in the utility of portals.

The implication is that portals won't be seen much, so wouldn't it be better to develop pages that are?

And since such development isn't limited to editing, almost anything is possible. If we can't bring readers to portals, we could bring portal features, or even better features, to the readers (i.e., to articles)...

Some potential future directions of development

Quantum portals?

An approach that has received some brainstorming is "quantum portals", meaning portals generated on-the-fly and presented directly on the view screen without any saved portal pages. This could be done by script or as a MediaWiki program feature, but would initially be done by script. The main benefits of this is that it would be opt-in (only those who wanted it would install it), and the resultant generated pages wouldn't be saved, so that there wouldn't be anything to maintain except the script itself.

Non-portal integrated components

Another approach would be to focus on implementing specific features independently, and provide them somewhere highly visible in a non-portal presentation context (that is, on a page that wasn't a portal that has lots of traffic, i.e., articles). Such as inserted directly into an article's HTML, as a pop-up there, or as a temporary page. There are scripts that use these approaches (providing unrelated features), and so these approaches have been proven to be feasible.

What kind of features could this be done with?

The various components of the automated portal design are transcluded excerpts, news, did you know, image slideshows, excerpt slideshows, and so on.

Some of the features, such as navigation footers and links to sister projects are already included on article pages. And some already have interface counterparts (such as image slideshows). Some of the rest may be able to be integrated directly via script, but may need further development before they are perfected. Fortunately, scripts are used on an opt-in basis, and therefore wouldn't affect readers-in-general and editors-at-large during the development process (except for those who wanted to be beta testers and installed the scripts).

The development of such scripts falls under the scope of the Javascript-WikiProject/Userscript-department, and will likely be listed on Wikipedia:User scripts/List when completed enough for beta-testing. Be sure to watchlist that page.

Where would that leave curated portals?

Being curated. At least for the time being.

New encyclopedia program features will likely eventually render most portals obsolete. For example, the pop-up feature of MediaWiki provides much the same functionality as excerpts in portals already, and there is also a slideshow feature to view all the images on the current page (just click on any image, and that activates the slideshow). Future features could also overlap portal features, until there is nothing that portals provide that isn't provided elsewhere or as part of Wikipedia's interface.

But, that may be a ways off. Perhaps months or years. It depends on how rapidly programmers develop them.

Keep on keepin' on

The features of Wikipedia and its articles will continue to evolve, even if Portals go by the wayside. Most, if not all of portals' functionality, or functions very similar, will likely be made available in some form or other.

And who knows what else?

No worries.

Coma ergo comma

Fa Chrissake, illuminate me about that comma, uvverwise, I'm not going to sleep tonight:) Or just fix it kindly. I might add that I can link to a wonderful example of at sight reverting, if you are curious. [39] [40] and the discussion that followed, here, which evoked a 'for fuck's sake' on my part over stalling, and the immediate redress of 'be civil', when there is no trace of civility in the thread or the reverts! History! (and I'm somewhat history myself). Regards.Nishidani (talk) 12:54, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Nishidani. I wasn't referring to your statements, mind (I don't find it very kind or civil to correct another editor's grammar, especially given the international nature of Wikipedia and the prevalence of errors with mobile device keyboards), but the grammatical error is in the open letter to the Foundation (which should be, of course, unblemished by error in tone or grammar), which, as a nonrestrictive adjective clause (if I recall what I was taught), could read as follows:

The ban itself was actioned using a recently-introduced T&S process for local, time-limited bans, which, although announced in T&S’ 2018–2019 Annual Plan, was not adequately communicated to the English Wikipedia community, and not subject to any form of community consultation.

I'm sorry if I caused you any confusion or distress; I sure didn't mean to: I was unclear in my response about what I was discussing (which is what I get for posting immediately after waking up). All in all, it's a slight error, and there are multiple ways of resolving it (for example, another comma where I placed it, while keeping the former comma, too), but I couldn't help but notice it in an otherwise flawless statement. (I may have some quibbles regarding the closing paragraph, too, but I've already said way too much.) Hope you're well, Nishidani, and, as always, thank you for your candid and much-needed insight. Javert2113 (Siarad.|¤) 13:13, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
In short, this wasn't about you (and I really do apologize if you felt I was speaking to you), but the open letter. There, one comma is needed to separate off the "which", regardless of other commas. Javert2113 (Siarad.|¤) 13:15, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

Thanks and a question

After editing Louis G. Dreyfus, the WikiGnome was thrilled to receive a kitten. The shy creature was pleased to discover the nice patch of "mushrooms" (articles) that you had planted. He has now slipped quietly from plant to plant, hoping to assist by clipping a blade of grass here, or patting down some soil there. It brings him pleasure to help the "big people" (writers) in his own small way.

Ever since T&S/WMF stomped through the forest a couple of months ago, the gnomes have been nervous. They have seen Avatar and fear the continued search for the unobtanium of Universal Civility. If my gnome is annoying you, please say so. He will trot on his tiny legs back into the undergrowth.

Seriously, though, I did look at some of your articles, to see if I could help. Added some sections, etc. One article has a problem that I cannot resolve: William S. B. Lacy. Look under "Career at the State Department". The first two sentences contradict each other-- 1944 vs. 1946. I don't have access to NYT, so I cannot check ref #2, to see if it provides clarification. If you have time, can you review? I will make the changes, if you do not care to edit in article space at this time. (I consider Fram's block to be a travesty of natural justice, and support your right to protest.)

Thank you for your excellent contributions. You are a good writer and researcher and I enjoyed reading your work. Best wishes for all your endeavors, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 22:13, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

  • Hello, Tribe of Tiger. I greatly appreciate your help in the maintenance and cleanup of some of the articles I've had the pleasure of contributing. I also wouldn't mind this being an ongoing thing for the next batch of articles; I admittedly do take quite some time to research and synthesize the sources, and I'd be obliged if you could, in effect, be a second pair of eyes to catch my errors and mistakes.
As for the matter in question: The New York Times article referenced, from 18 JULY 1961, notes that "[t]he 51-year-old diplomat has served in the State Department since 1944." The Washington Post article, as you may know, says that he began working at the State Department in 1946. It is possible (though I admit to pure speculation at this point) that Mr. Lacy served as some sort of informal liaison or in some sort of combined-duty capacity until 1946, when he formally transferred over to State; but, given the greater detail and verifiability of the Post in this matter, I would be inclined to write something approximating the following: "Trained as an economist, Lacy joined the State Department in 1944 [Times citation here] or in 1946, after working in the War Production Board and the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.[Post citation]" For that matter, a complete omission of the Times article would not be wholly incorrect, either.
Again, thank you for bringing that to my attention: it must have slipped through my generally rigorous fact-checking process. I'm afraid, however, that I must leave the ultimate decision of what to write to you, as a fellow editor; though I do believe that I will be ending my strike rather soon, upon the release of the final decision in the Arbitration Committee case, I fear that my graduate education will be dominating whatever free time I would otherwise gladly devote to the betterment and improvement of this project. Thanks, this was very helpful! I have made the changes, as you suggested. I left the WaPo ref in place, in case others cannot access NYT. Do you have a subscription to NYT or can you access it through your university? I enjoy reading refs for further info, and find it distressing to be "shut out" of certain citations.
It can be a challenge to proofread one's own work, especially after you've already spent so much time immersed in reading sources, writing and revising. It will be a pleasure to review any upcoming articles that you produce. I will check your user page list from time to time, or you could send me a ping. Hope this current semester is a good one for you! Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 02:33, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:38, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

What I did.

So what I did for the new locks were simple. I thought that they needed a new design to prevent confusion. I saw that some were the same colour and the symbol could be misleading. That is why the cascade protection lock is blue. I changed the letters a bit to keep it a character consistent. So, that is what I did. Thanks --Wyatt2049 | (Talk) or (Stalk) 00:29, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. Wyatt2049, did you, by any chance, look into how the current locks and your proposed locks affect the colour-blind? Thank you! (Feel free to reply on the Village Pump (proposals) page, too.) Javert2113 (Siarad.|¤) 00:39, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

That's What my teacher says. And is it a support or oppose? --Wyatt2049 | (Talk) or (Stalk) 00:47, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
I'm not sure yet, but I might not be able to support; we're pretty serious about everyone being able to access Wikipedia equally here, and that's the deciding factor for me, I'm afraid. Javert2113 (Siarad.|¤) 00:53, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

  • Editors using the mobile website on Wikipedia can opt-in to new advanced features via your settings page. This will give access to more interface links, special pages, and tools.
  • The advanced version of the edit review pages (recent changes, watchlist, and related changes) now includes two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions". They will filter the view to just those namespaces.

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Javert2113,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Arthur Sherburne Hardy, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Alexander McDonald (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

Deletion discussion about Kate Marie Byrnes

Hello, Javert2113

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username SportingFlyer and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Kate Marie Byrnes, should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kate Marie Byrnes.

You might like to note that such discussions usually run for seven days and are not ballot-polls. And, our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|SportingFlyer}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

(Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Javert2113,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 810 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.
