[edit]Is there a way for your bot to do this, without moving the administration subcats or single article? (And without deleting the source category, of course. Keeping it as the parent.) - jc37 21:52, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Is Cydebot currently {{nobots}} compliant? If not, could you make it so? Nikkimaria (talk) 16:12, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
It should be compliant, since it uses PyWikipediaBot, and I haven't made any localized modifications to that part of it. --Cyde Weys 19:43, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- Good to know. It's not on the list, so I wasn't sure. Thanks, Nikkimaria (talk) 02:16, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Cydebot repeating a category on a CFD merger
[edit]Hello - just a query re this edit. I closed the relevant CFD as "merge" (it was said that the articles were already in the parent category, but I thought a merger was best just to be on the safe side in case some had slipped through in the past). I thought that the bot wouldn't add the category again if it was already there, but it seems that I was wrong. Is this an unavoidable feature of the bot's operation, and / or sufficiently rare that it can't reasonably be prevented? It appears to make no difference to the categories displayed at the foot of the article (and certainly doesn't now that I've removed the duplicate), it just adds to the wikitext, but checking to see if the merger target is already present in the article would seem to be a worthwhile step. Regards, BencherliteTalk 12:37, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
Odd move by Cydebot
[edit]Hi Cyde, I stumbled across Category:People from Hennepin County, Minneota, [sic] which was populated by one article (Milt Bruhn). Cydebot moved it from Category:People from St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, which was accurate for Bruhn (the category merge discussion is here). I'm not sure what went wrong; the misspelled version doesn't quite qualify for C1 speedy deletion, so I haven't tagged it. I was hoping you could delete the misspelled category for me, and I thought you might want to see if something went wrong with the bot. Thanks, BDD (talk) 20:34, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- {talk-page stalker) - Nothing went wrong with the bot - the admin commanding the bot to make the change made a typo. Category deleted as housekeeping. Well-spotted! BencherliteTalk 20:42, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Leftover category links
[edit]Howdy - a bot-issue for you. Cydebot does a great job dealing with with 'red' category links following the deletion/move of categories, but doesn't seem to see non-category links ([[:Category:Foo]] rather than [[Category:Foo]]). At a guess, I'd say it's operating from the categorylinks table rather than pagelinks. There may well be a good reason for this, but it's leaving oddities behind - see for example the Men's clubs links on Template:Football in Angola, Template:Football in Anguilla and a few more. - TB (talk) 15:41, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- (self reply) Hum .. actually, this might be a bigger issue than I had thought :( - TB (talk) 17:47, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

clydebot actions
[edit]hi. i'm puzzled. this edit http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category_talk:15th-century_crimes&diff=528588144&oldid=528221624 carries over "talk page" edit history, whereas on the category itself side, this edit http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:15th-century_crimes&oldid=528588143 creates a new page without carrying over "article page" edit history. i would expect for edit histories, when a namespace is moved, for an edit history for both the category namespace and its related talk page. this is not first instance i've seen. regards.--96.232.126.27 (talk) 19:06, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
This is an ages-old MediaWiki limitation at work. It's not possible to move category pages. See mw:Help:Categories, specifically this: "Unlike other wiki pages, it is not possible to rename (move) a category. It is necessary to create a new category and change the Category tag on every page. The new category will not have the older category's page history, which is undesirable if there are many revisions." This comes up quite frequently, and alas, until MediaWiki itself changes, I can't improve how Cydebot works. --Cyde Weys 20:21, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Robot - Moving category People associated with Ibiza to Category:People from Ibiza
[edit]- For your information as posted at Category talk:People from Ibiza
- For your information as posted at Category talk:People from Ibiza
Hello Cyde Following a long and lively debate at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 November 1#Category:People_associated_with_Ibiza, I thought this issue was concluded with no-consensus as to the correct categorization to proceed with. Regardless of this, this Bot has re-categorising this list. Once again I must comment that some people on this list cannot be said to be from Ibiza. But have a very strong connection with the island. It is may be necessary for these people to be found, in connection with the island by anyone with an interest in the subject and who wishes to Navigate around the articles. This Category title doesn’t really cover these people and the Bot which has re-organised this, Not only removed it from its parent Category:Ibiza (Now restored), has no differential and I thinks has destroyed the original easier route in which readers could have navigated and searched this category. stavros1 ♣ 19:15, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Non-free trademark/doc
[edit]A tag has been placed on Template:Non-free trademark/doc, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:38, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Updating interwiki for renamed categories
[edit]I think that when your bot renames a category, it should make sure that if the category has a Wikidata entry, the entry is updated. More details:
- The bot should check if the old category name has an entry in Wikidata. If not, skip the rest of these instructions.
- The bot should check if the new category name has an entry in Wikidata. If it does, skip the rest of these instructions (to avoid possible conflicts/mistakes).
- Update the enwiki name for the entry found in step 1.

cat. Anosy => Anosy Region
[edit]cyde, why the hell did you rename the Category:Anosy to Category:Anosy Region ?
Please refix this and rename it back ! It's me who's doing 99% of the articles there - and there is no logical reason for renaming it. There is no other "Anosy" in the world, so that this needs further precision. Thanks & regards Tonton Bernardo (talk) 09:53, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
