Yet another question

Checking-in on Portal:Rhode Island, I can't get the infobox in the article to stop being transcluded into the portal, after tweaking the transclude lead template in various ways. Since you have been most helpful regarding such quandaries in the past, running this by you for hopeful input. Cheers, North America1000 14:26, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

@Northamerica1000: I no longer maintain Module:Excerpt following protection changes. However, the problem goes away if the {{#expr:...}} in Rhode Island's infobox, which calculates water area, is replaced by a simple number. Another editor recently changed the module's handling of such parser functions, but has also been discouraged from editing the module further. Certes (talk) 15:12, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
Fixed. Certes (talk) 15:53, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks a bunch. It would have taken me an hour or more to figure all of that out, having to research everything, etc. I don't work in the module area at all, but if you were to obtain template editor rights, that would enable you to continue working on them, if you still want to. North America1000 16:16, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
We already have one group trying to internationalise the module while another deploys it in article space, and both have had a template editor demoted in the last few days. Tempting as it is to reclaim ownership, another editor applying to pull the software in a third direction might be the last thing they need right now. Certes (talk) 20:54, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
I had no idea about any of this. Why not have separate module pages, ones to internationalize and ones just dedicated to templates, portals, etc. (if it's possible to do so)? North America1000 04:24, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
Reusability. Most of the code is common to portals and articles, and we'd have to duplicate it and maintain multiple versions. Using a single module makes sense because each use case can benefit from the others' improvements. I can still suggest fixes and enhancements, and fill in the edit request forms. However, that was the least appealing part of programming when I was being paid for it, and I'm not keen to take the task on as a volunteer. The module is fit for the purposes it was designed for, so perhaps it's time to say that the portal software is complete. If anyone wants to adapt it for use elsewhere, good luck to them, though we do ask that they not break the portal functionality. Certes (talk) 10:35, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
Intetesting stuff, and good to know. Thanks for the replies, and happy editing. North America1000 14:36, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Mro etc.

Hi Certes! It seems that the ethnic SPA is totally unwilling to contribute to WP in a constructive and collaborative manner. Their edit history is a pathetic trail of disruption, especially the page moves. I have shot two final warning templates at their talk page, but I think that actually the case is already ripe for ANI at the present stage. –Austronesier (talk) 08:18, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for stepping in, Austronesier. I have no subject knowledge and have been trying to treat the two editors sympathetically – either or both of them may be right, for all I know – but you're right that the behaviour is disruptive. See also Mro(Mru) people. Certes (talk) 09:00, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
FYI, I have brought Moyezan's behavior to ANI[1]. Yomeo also has done a pair of ill-performed moves, but they are much more willing to communicate and express their concerns (within their limited means). –Austronesier (talk) 10:25, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Certes, I saw most of Mro ethnic photos and information are removed. As i am a local and research for that. I do not understand why Wikipedia administrator are remove without any reason. Can you let me now what about, Wikipedia stand for. Thanks --Yomeo (talk) 13:57, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Yomeo. I removed a link to an image which no longer exists. It was deleted from Wikimedia Commons after this request with the explanation Small size, no metadata, unlikely to be own work of uploader as claimed. I have not reviewed the images but they look very suitable if Wikipedia is allowed to use them. If you own the copyright on these pictures, or if they are in the public domain, you may want to ask for them to be restored via Commons:Undeletion requests. Certes (talk) 14:10, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

@Dawood.CX: I see that you and the other topic specialists such as Dawood.XV have done a lot of work on expanding Zameen.com. Perhaps you could produce similar articles for other companies in the sector and link them from {{Real estate in Pakistan}}, to give a broader overview of real estate portals in Pakistan rather than limiting it to one company? I don't know the industry but a quick search brings up Earthpk, Graana, Ilaan, Jagan, Pakistan Real Estate and Real Property along with Zameen. Certes (talk) 09:37, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

I would love to create the articles for Earthpk, Graana, Ilaan, Jagan, Pakistan Real Estate and Real Property, but in way would come the issue of "Wikipedia:Notability" and the page would be suggested for Speedy Deletion. Please advice.

@Dawood.CX: Thanks for the reply. That's a good point. I don't know those companies well enough to advise which of them would pass WP:ORG. WikiProject Companies seems quite active and may be able to give a more informed opinion. Hope that helps, Certes (talk) 11:17, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Check out...

Check out Portal:Pop music. I remember that you pinged me at its MfD discussion a few months ago, but I didn't participate. I have recently upgraded the portal and updated it with more articles. See its talk page for a synopsis of recent work that has occurred. Feel free to improve it more if interested. Cheers, North America1000 06:35, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

It's a hit! That's looking a lot better, and more importantly will stay looking good as you've pre-empted the usual embarrassments such as excerpts which begin "Elvis Dead is a singer". Thanks again for continuing with the good work. Ideally most portals need a subject expert, and I've generally moved back to disambiguation work and on to other areas where a gnome seems to be badly needed, but I am keeping an eye open for queries about the module.
MfDs seem to have died down but I have noticed a new tendency to propose "archiving" without defining it precisely. Deletion should not be used for archiving a page, but there may be some confusion over that policy. Certes (talk) 10:41, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
The idea for now is to improve portals such as this so that they 1) provide current, up to date information, which is solved by using transclusion templates, 2) Revive them a bit, remove outdated content, adding new content, etc. Oftentimes, more FA- and GA-class articles are available then were around when the portals were created. 3) provide readers that check them out with a functional medium to navigate content, 4) continue improving them periodically to keep content fresh. I feel that the transclusion templates that include lists of articles is functional to at least invite other users to edit, particularly when compared to the subpage system. North America1000 14:15, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
Regarding my very last sentence above, see the Revision history for Portal:Suriname (here). An example of someone coming in and adding more to the portal. North America1000 14:29, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
Yes, you (and a few others) have made it easy for someone who can locate Suriname without a map to give us the benefit of their expertise. That's a great achievement. Certes (talk) 14:53, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

User:Certes/Surname links - all  Done. Narky Blert (talk) 13:44, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

@Narky Blert: Thank you for sorting these out and for spotting one of my mistakes. Your comments were useful: I've fixed [[marshe]]s and Voss in non-taxon articles. I'm currently working through User:Certes/misdirected links#Surnames: 2400 fixes for 70 different surnames so far. I estimate that there are about 10,000 left. It may not be practical to do them all but I can at least pick the low-hanging fruit. Certes (talk) 14:21, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
I'd come across the Rothschild problem before, during our 2019 exercise. It's uncommon for there to be two near-contemporary independent naturalist relatives with the same interests. Precisely one hit in my search identified the original paper, and then it was easy: Biodiversity Heritage Library is a wonderful resource. I think I discovered it while drafting Carlo Antonio Fornasini, which made an unexpected call on my Grade 2 Latin O-Level, and of whose pageview analysis I am quirkily proud.
That other listing of yours looks ugly. Feel free to call on me if you would like the services of an editor who can read Foreign. Narky Blert (talk) 15:29, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks; I will. Most foreigners so far have been familiar European languages. What we do need is a polymath: several names such as Wright are generally correct but hide links to diverse topics like Wright (electoral district), Ben Wright (footballer, born 1980) and Wrightbus. Certes (talk) 20:42, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello. Java Rockin'land has hundreds of artists/bands linked, most are red and many of the bluelinks go to the wrong place as a result of mass-indiscriminate=linking. I was thinking it may be best to just unlink them all. Thoughts? MB 22:35, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

@MB: I've come across a few of these and they're awkward. If you use Popups or similar, you could hover over the links and vet them quickly. Links to Bite, Clover, etc. are clearly unhelpful but ideally we should keep /rif, Burgerkill, etc. That leaves the redlinks: it's a close call as to whether to unlink those to avoid problems later or leave them red in the hope that someone will write the missing article. Theoretically, a diligent editor would also check whether Bite (disambiguation) lists an Indonesian band. (Spoiler: it doesn't.) Certes (talk) 22:58, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
I would normally use WP:DABSOLVER, but that is currently not available, right? MB
@MB: Not through the usual channels, but you can enter it via the back door here. Of course, it will only assist you in fixing links to dabs, not links to irrelevant articles such as Denial. Certes (talk) 11:19, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
I forgot that the "unlink" works only on dabs links, and not normal wikilinks. I went through manually and removed about 30 links (mostly made them red by adding (band) disambiguators. There were a couple of Indonesian bands out there hiding! This led me to some missing dab pages. Betrayer is a redirect to Betrayal. Betrayer (video game), Betrayer (band), and The Betrayer are all candidates for Betrayer (disambiguation). Assuming the redirect stays as the PT, do we change the hatnote there to
Another weird case is Noxa which redirects to Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate-induced protein 1. There is also Noxa (band). If you search on Noxa, you get to the protein. A hatnote there: would make sense if you got there by redirect after typing Noxa but would be confusing if you got there another way. What should I do here? A two-item dab page? MB 23:05, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
@MB: Thanks for improving the article. Betrayer should probably get a dab, though it has few incoming links and all mean "traitor" except Johan Liiva which should be a redlink. Pragmatically, we could do as you suggest with the hatnote; technically we should add a separate {{redirect}} as I've done for Speak Up and Noxa. (There shouldn't be too many more like Noxa, as we worked through the gene acronyms last December: discussion). Certes (talk) 00:12, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

Dispenser tools

I saw your comments on the Dispenser Talk page. For several months I have been unable to get any of the Dispenser Tools to work. Any ideas? Thanks.Vmavanti (talk) 19:49, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

@Vmavanti: Most of them work if you go via https://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/... rather than dispenser.info.tm. http: usually won't work as it redirects you to https: for security reasons but, in doing so, redirects you to the broken domain too. Hope that helps, Certes (talk) 20:37, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

redirect/dab

Can you advise on Riverside Mall. I created this redirect for a mall in Utica, NY that does not have an article but was mentioned in an article on its developer.

Today, the page was turned into a pseudo-dab. The new entry is a mall in Riverside, California that doesn't go by that name - so I don't think it's a valid dab. It needs to be reverted or turned into an actual dab page. MB 03:52, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

It's probably a dab. The only incoming link was meant for a third mall in Nelspruit, South Africa, which also has no article. I've had a hack at the page and resolved the link, but it's still not our best or most important dab. Certes (talk) 09:31, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
Yes, a dab with no matching bluelink! It still may help someone someday. MB 14:02, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
G14 does not support deletion of this dab but has some relevant advice: If a disambiguation page links to only one article and does not end in (disambiguation), it should be changed to a redirect. I'm not sure how many articles this dab "links to": do blue links after the start of an entry and See Alsos count? Certes (talk) 15:09, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
Like many things here, subject to interpretation. I would say that all three redlinks could be made into redirect/bluelinks, and all are potential articles so think it passes. Some others might disagree. MB 17:33, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
@MB: A similar case is being discussed at Talk:Statue of Robert Baden-Powell#Requested move 1 July 2020: several things so called; only one has an article. Certes (talk) 21:14, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@Shhhnotsoloud: What I created was a redirect to an existing dab at the base name. The primary topic has since been restored to the base name, overwriting the dab and temporarily leaving the (disambiguation) redirect targetting one article. WilyD and I have recreated the dab. We may still want a dab because there are multiple topics, in which case we should link it from the PT hatnote, or we may feel that hatnotes are adequate. Certes (talk) 10:57, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
That's fine Certes, there was no criticism intended. This was one of a number of "dangling" Foo (disambiguation) redirects I'm tidying up. It's now a good page, Thanks, and regards, Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 11:02, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

Template : Stafford-Manchester line RDT

As both Wedgwood and Barlaston stations are in their current "state of limbo", neither officially closed but not served by rail services, is there a different type of station icon that can be placed against both these two stations on the line template, as it looks if the closed station icon has been applied in both cases.

Xenophon Philosopher (talk) 07:28, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

@Xenophon Philosopher: The stations use pHST with the "p" for "passed" prefix (c:BSicon/Catalogue#Naming logic, third table). That's described as Express (do they mean that expresses don't call?) but can also be used for custom purposes, as in this example for "set down only". I can't think of anything better, but I'm only an occasional diagram editor and the RDT regulars may be more helpful. Certes (talk) 09:21, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Not just expresses do not call, no train services at all call, but the two stations have currently not been through a formal closure procedure.

Xenophon Philosopher (talk) 14:26, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

@Xenophon Philosopher: As you say, the facade is that the stations are officially open; it's just that all services happen to be replacement buses. Is there an exact equivalent elsewhere? All the cases I can think of are either formally closed or have a token service with an actual train. Although neither is an exact match, I think the stations are metaphorically somewhere between Redcar British Steel and Teesside Airport, which both use pHST, so that is probably the least bad option. Certes (talk) 14:47, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

dab question

This one is simple. In Reynolds, there is Reynolds, California (disambiguation). Under that are two locations from the Calif. dab page, which actually has a third.

Is it better to remove the sub-bullets and change it to "Reynolds, California (disambiguation), several locations in California" so this can never be wrong again, or just add the third place here (it seems wrong to have the same "list" in two places making double work to update). MB 03:10, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

@MB: We need Reynolds, California and its (disambiguation) redirect, and it looks good except that I would remove the redlink which is not mentioned in Tulare County, California or elsewhere. As there are only two entries, I'd repeat them in the main list and not link to the California dab: one more line to save readers a click is good value. If there were several entries then I'd only link the dab, and that's not actually wrong here either. Another option is to transclude text from the California dab, but that's non-standard and perhaps unnecessarily complex. Others at WT:D might have differing opinions. Certes (talk) 09:33, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
I hadn't noticed the redlink - that changes everything. The page was so small, I only viewed it as a pop-up window where the link is blue. My first preference is to turn it blue by mentioning it somewhere, but beyond GNIS saying it was on a 1928 map, I can't find anything. It was probably just a ranch or mine. I've done some cleanup.MB 16:12, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

MC

In Pitsford School, I came across the splendidly-named Sir Hereward Wake MC DL. The first postnominal looked implausible, so I WP:BOLDly amended the link. Eyeballing the links-in turned up nineteen more, including an FRSE, two KBEs, two major-generals, and one with a bar. Narky Blert (talk) 07:53, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Good spot. I've reunited four other alleged DJs with their medals. Certes (talk) 10:14, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
That last one was marked by an asterisk not the word, but it set me a-thinking. On checking the links-in, I discovered a gallant drunk, an unexpected fact about Pakistani lawyers, that the sheriffs of London present petitions at the Bar of the House of Commons, and even one bar which (among other things) once housed a royal library, once had its own imam, and today hosts football matches, is on a major road network and has a 46MW wind farm. Narky Blert (talk) 10:23, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Hope

I had hoped to discover someone who had lived (or was at least born) in Hope, but no such luck. I did, however, find an album, a band, a commercial, two films, a golf course (perhaps relocated from Expectation), two British hamlets, a song, a Turkish city, and a TV relay station (a productive article - it also contained Cowling and Idle). Narky Blert (talk) 13:36, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

@Narky Blert: Good spot. John Wright (greyhound trainer) seems to have lived in Hope before moving to Flintshire. I also found three buildings, two more songs, a bank, a cycle race and a fashion brand. I searched for linksto:Hope insource:/\[\[Hope/ to exclude lowercase links but, with the personification as a proper noun, most results are false positives. Certes (talk) 23:59, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
MC and Hope exemplify how difficult it is to find every bad link to a PTOPIC. Narky Blert (talk) 13:36, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
To be honest, I'm disappointed that I missed this one. I reviewed Flintshire (44 bad links to Mold and several to Flint) in April, and looked at Derbyshire recently too. Certes (talk) 14:08, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
Staying in that part of the world, Greenfield and Holywell are DAB pages, and don't suffer from such problems. Narky Blert (talk) 20:16, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
We moved Holywell in 2018. All 127 links correctly referred to the Flintshire town. Certes (talk) 22:04, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
We used to have twin factories in Greenfield. A colleague was barred from a pub in Holywell after asking for an extra sachet of grease for his burger and chips. Narky Blert (talk) 15:35, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

The Mercury

I'll clean up this pile of garbage in the morning, and retarget The Mercury to DAB page Mercury. However, this find may prompt you into keeping an eye out for other similar bad redirects to SIAs.

(I was draughting one of my rare articles when I added a citation to the Hobart newspaper. Surely that link will turn orange (or in the case at issue, oranje) not blue, so that I can get the correct link from the DAB page? Oh no it didn't.) Narky Blert (talk) 18:02, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

I'm working through widely linked SIAs, improving links that should be more specific. (For example, Ministry of Defence usually refers to one nation's efforts.) I checked newspaper SIAs 18 months ago: I fixed 34 bad links to The Mercury and am disappointed that so many more have appeared since. At least it's better than The Express, which until last year was about an unremarkable sports film. I'm not sure that Mercury is the best target though: The Mercury rarely refers to the planet, element or deity. Perhaps List of newspapers named Mercury should be a dab called The Mercury, as we did with The Telegraph last year following this discussion. Certes (talk) 19:40, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
I found 39 to go with the 34 you found last year, and 1 to Mercury (newspaper). (That was how I learned of {{siadn}} and Category:All set index articles with links needing disambiguation. I plan to give it a seeing-to once I've dealt with the couple of hundred ambiguous johns in DPwL.)
IMO the List contains far too many WP:PTMs for it to be a DAB page. It also has unlinked entries, which are OK in a SIA but not a DAB. My current idea is to add a new Newspapers section at Mercury#Literature, duplicate the 3 or 4 full matches from the List into there (and move the List there from see-also), and retarget The Mercury and Mercury (newspaper) at that. Most editors will be looking for the Hobart paper, and that would make it easy to find. Thoughts?
Incidentally, I found confirmation that American Mercury is referred to as Mercury, so it's in its proper place on the DAB page. Narky Blert (talk) 10:02, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
That sounds like a reasonable compromise. Over 90% of my fixes were for Hobart. Set indices on newspapers was the list I worked through. Star (newspaper) now claims to be both a SIA and a dab, which is inconsistent but handy as incoming links get flagged. We also have PTs such as The Daily Telegraph, which had over 250 bad links intended for topics such as The Daily Telegraph (Sydney). Certes (talk) 10:16, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
@Narky Blert: I'm afraid I just added about 100 more articles to All set index articles with links needing disambiguation. I'd tagged these as dn over the last few months, but siadn is more appropriate. Of course, despite its title, the category lists pages with bad links rather than the linked SIAs. Certes (talk) 12:40, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
Mercury etc. done as proposed (substed {{anchor}}, Awful Warnings, and everything).
I agree about the inaccuracy of the cat title, which doesn't parallel Articles with links needing disambiguation; but it does its job. I will evade your devious schemes by looking at the oldest links first (emptying a maintenance category is satisfying). Narky Blert (talk) 14:57, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
The older links in that cat are brutal, though I was lucky enough to find a handful where the problem had been solved but the tag not removed. Even searching in Cyrillic got me nowhere on one of them; but I did manage to find that HMS Albatross was in fact USS Albatross (easy mistake, which anyone could make). I've asked WP:WikiProject Poland for help with one of your recent ones (Second Polish Republic); I haven't called on them before. Narky Blert (talk) 17:04, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
Most links to Council of State were easily fixed, but the Second Polish Republic followed the Council of State (Kingdom of Poland) and pre-dated the Polish Council of State. I considered the Provisional Council of State but that disbanded the previous year. It may just be a short-lived and barely notable council of state with no specific article. Unfortunately, many of the new siadn tags may be difficult, as I hope the editor placing the tag will have had a go first. Certes (talk) 18:21, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
WikiProject Poland quickly sorted that problem.
Now down to 90 for this month. That cat isn't without interest - the first of your tags I looked at today involved a mistransliteration from Russian into the German name of an obscure village known only to Polish WP. Narky Blert (talk) 15:42, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
Now 62, and hoping for <20. Some fixes are trickier than others. They can make a refreshing change from adding qualifiers or unlinking common words. Early in my searches, I began to suspect that Cavalli had had no hoof in the design of the Peschiera. Narky Blert (talk) 16:33, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Well done! My aim was to maximise improvement per hour by addressing obvious errors in bulk and marking those I couldn't fix quickly for expert attention. Except for the easy answers I've overlooked, they're all tricky cases. There's also an intermediate class where I did nothing. For example, I just skipped someone who worked in the Palau Ministry of Finance: we have no article on that particular department, so the link continues to tell the reader what a finance ministry is. Certes (talk) 17:39, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Spanish WP had the same mistake, most likely copied from English WP. Much like you, I suspect, my ability to be arsed depends on numerous factors, including the quality and importance of the article, and the time of day. For example, the needle on my arsednessometer hit zero earlier today with the link to Risk in Amitabh Bhattacharjee. Hey, it's blue, innit? Though considering the <ahem> risk of links to that PTOPIC being intended for Risk (game) and so on, it might be one for your list. Narky Blert (talk) 18:26, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
The versatile Bhattacharjee also performed in a town, two singers and a cosmic force. I know little about Indian cinema but it can often be a good source of bad links. Checking games is a helpful suggestion which I'll look into. Monopoly came up in my general search for mislink magnets (51 errors) but I've not looked at Risk or others yet. Update: 16 links to Risk fixed, mainly games but a few for Risk (2007 film). Certes (talk) 20:42, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Yours is a new project. I'm not surprised it's turning up difficult-but-soluble problems. I found the same when I first began to cycle through DPwL. (I remember one, relating to a palace owned by the Bishop of Breslau (as the place then was). None of the articles on the Czech, English, German and Polish DAB pages could resolve it. I managed it by creative googling; similar but not identical spelling, and we had an article; a very handsome castle. Looking at that, I saw that it had belonged to the lord of someplace-or-other - at the opposite side of Poland, which seemed implausible. Yet more creative googling, and I may have been the only person then alive to know who had handed the castle over and why. (A C14 princeling decided to absorb the territory of a small and feeble neighbour. Unfortunately, the neighbour had large and irascible mates. The bishop agreed to intercede, leaving the aggressor with most of his original possessions - for a price.))

Indian articles fill me with dread. One PTOPIC you might care to look at is Bhairavi. If any bad links are music-related, I know who you might ask - see User talk:ShubhanTelang#Help requested.

This felt like a worthwhile edit. I did find an English-language citation attributing the book to one Michael Scheißkopf, but doubted its reliability. Narky Blert (talk) 13:46, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

The article's other citation suggests that your suspicion may be well founded. Certes (talk) 14:28, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Bhairavi had 29 bad links when I checked it in June. There may now be fewer, if I've managed to sort the Carnatic rāgams from the Hindustani thaats. Certes (talk) 15:21, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Not es:WP:FF, IMO. Narky Blert (talk) 16:35, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
A brief look at the last-500 (which is where the bad links often appear; I've no idea at all how links-in are sorted, the order often looks random) suggested that Cologne may be more-or-less OK. However, a last-500 look at bridge turned up this and this with minimal effort. Sigh. THINK before you LINK. Narky Blert (talk) 19:50, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
(Bridge is also ridiculously WP:OVERLINKed.) Narky Blert (talk) 20:18, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
I changed 20 links from Cologne to Eau de Cologne two months ago. It's nearly two years since I looked at Bridge; I fixed 81 articles, mainly for the game. I don't look at every link and probably missed some errors; others may have accumulated recently. The type of checking I do wouldn't spot overlinking if it has the meaning at the base name. Certes (talk) 23:42, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
Down to 20 in the October category, then I got stuck.
Before 1928, and possibly into the early 1930s, "bridge" will probably be auction bridge (less likely straight bridge) and not contract. Narky Blert (talk) 07:30, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
19. Our Indian colleague solved the last Bhairavi problem (and fixed a couple of other errors in the relevant article). Narky Blert (talk) 06:03, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
I've skimmed X (game) and X (board/card/video game) and worked through the most likely cases. I fixed pleasingly few bad links to topics like Othello and Scotland Yard; most were for non-game topics such as Brass section and Taboo (rapper). I hope that no one writing about auction bridge would expect to find its article at Bridge, even if the structure has slipped their mind. Certes (talk) 11:12, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Puzzled

Hi Certes: On Portal:Ireland, no matter what I do, the Transclude random excerpt template is only listing ten articles in the List of selected cities section, despite there being eleven listed within the portal. Perhaps you could provide some input. What am I missing here? North America1000 17:18, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

@Northamerica1000: The article whose excerpt appears is now excluded from the list. The relevant code is table.remove(candidates, candidateKey) -- candidate processed, which appeared in a different form with this update. As you may remember, Module:Excerpt was template-editor protected in February before being enhanced with several non-portal functions. At that time, I stopped watching changes to the module, as I no longer felt able to help. The code has been returned to us as Module:Excerpt/portals, which is similar to the old version but has many changes with which I'm not familiar. Certes (talk) 17:48, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, Certes. Pinging @Sophivorus: here. Maybe they can help out. I don't know enough about modules to tinker with them myself; I'd probably just end up breaking something! North America1000 00:20, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
If we want to show the selected article in the list then I think all we need to do is to wrap the remove (shown above) in something like if (text and text ~= ""). Alternatively, we could copy the whole table before removals occur and have showall use the copy, but that seems more expensive. Certes (talk) 00:35, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I'm not fluent in module coding. I've posted at Module talk:Excerpt about the above. North America1000 07:08, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

This one has some links that should be to Romance novel. No sure how many since "what links here" picks up a template also, so I haven't looked further. MB 17:44, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

@MB:Done; thanks for the tip. I filter this sort of error with a search like linksto:"Romance (novel)" insource:/\[\[[Rr]omance/ -Conrad -Madox, adding Template: and a few other namespaces. 26 articles, one portal and {{Infobox animanga}} fixed; two false positives skipped. Certes (talk) 10:52, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

New

A new one, Portal:Lakes. Feel free to suggest anything to improve it. Cheers, North America1000 15:25, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

@Northamerica1000: Looks good; well done. A nice bright eye-catching picture and plenty of relevant content. The column of navboxes feels a bit big, but the alternative is a nest of hidden boxes which I hate having to open recursively. Is "Lakesography" really a thing? Certes (talk) 17:39, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
Fixed that typo. Whoops. Nope, no "lakesography". I don't mind the nav boxes, and I too don't like everything collapsed into one small box that has to be expanded. I would bet that only one in one hundred readers would bother to open it. They're near the end, so people don't have to use it or see it if they don't want to. North America1000 17:53, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
@Northamerica1000: Another gap filled. Lots to admire there but I think the panoramas at the top (which give the first impression) could be tweaked. On my screen, most of them come up as sky and need to be scrolled down to see the interesting bits (though moving the aeroplane up and down is amusing). Certes (talk) 19:44, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the idea. I used "|croptop=15" in the Portal image banner template. It would be great if each image could be cropped separately, but no go. Unless I'm missing something, only one value is allowed. At any rate, it took care of the airplane image. Check it out! North America1000 03:01, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
That works, at least for the random subset of images that came up for me. Module:Portal image banner encloses the gallery in a div with one margin-top: style, which may be the best we can do. The module's author has retired but Evad37 knows more about image handling than most. Certes (talk) 11:46, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Square number page problem

i am sorry but i am realy bad at spelling so please baer with me. i dont understand why my edits to the page called "Square number" were taken back. i then dont understand what you ment by this "single value for this simple calculation" but this is my intepritation. i think that you are trying to say that i am trying to over complicat the ocuation in witch you think is simple when it is realy not. 0*0 and all things related to 0 in an eqation is more complicated then you seem to think. the awenser can not simpley be a one number awenser. if this does nto make sence then here is a video that is abl to explane it much better then me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRRolKTlF6Q~ 5illian — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5illian (talkcontribs) 18:46, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

@5illian: As the video explains, zero to the power of anything is zero. This includes 0 × 0 or 02, which is never 1 or –1 but always 0. The video also mentions that division by zero is undefined, and that the expression 00 can be confusing, but neither of those problems is relevant to Square number. Certes (talk) 22:03, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

i guess i interprited it differintly then you. sorry for bothering you. i hope your having a good day~5illian — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5illian (talkcontribs) 22:43, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

@5illian: A bit of geometry may help. 0 × 0 or 02 is the area of a square with sides of zero length. It clearly has an area of zero, not 1 (in what units?) and certainly not –1. It's true that 1 × 0 and –1 × 0 are also zero, but that is not relevant here because they are not squares. Certes (talk) 23:32, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

yeah okay. im in grade 8 sooo..... my knolge of this concept is entirly from my understanding of the video. anyways thanks for the help i guess and your day :)~5illian

New dab

Temple Block had been a redirect to Temple Square for 10+ years. It is now a dab with two (Temple Block)s and two (Temple Square)s. Pageviews show the church complex in Salt Lake City (Temple Square) gets 10x the views of the other articles so it would be a PT if it had the same name. But block ≠ square. Googling "Temple block" shows the instrument is most likely what this means. The instrument is at Temple block with lowercase "b" (and it's actually another redirect to wooden fish).

I don't think this needs to be a dab. Temple Square and Temple Square station don't need to be disambiguated. Temple Block (Los Angeles) and Temple block don't need disambiguation either (both are redirects anyway). There is a small chance someone searching WP for Temple Block may be looking for Temple Square. I think this should all be handled with hatnotes. I was going to start a discussion to get other opinions, but I'm not even sure where to do that. It can't be at RFD since Temple Block is no longer a redirect. Maybe RM, since moving Temple Block (Los Angeles) to Temple Block could be a solution. Or should I just start a discussion on the Temple Block TP suggesting to un-dab the page and asking for input at the dab project TP.

Comments? MB 02:06, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

What is the reader who types in "Temple Block" seeking? Probably Temple Block (Los Angeles): although a subtopic, it's the only subject on Wikipedia with that exact title. Possibly Temple Square: although not known by that name, it is a "temple block", so we should provide a route to there from the destination of "Temple block" and perhaps "Temple Block". Possibly Chinese temple block: not everyone is fastidious about capitalisation. Certainly not Temple Square station; that doesn't mention "block" and is probably never known as "Temple Block". Wooden fish has more incoming links than the rest put together but most of those links have nothing to do with "temple block", let alone "Temple Block". Incoming links for the current dab are LA 1:1 SLC. Search has a clear majority for LA, with the odd mention of SLC and others.
In the absence of history, I'd have made "Temple Block" a straight {{R to section}} to Victorian Downtown Los Angeles#Temple Block per WP:DIFFCAPS and added a hatnote. However, changing target from one article to another breaks incoming external links, so we should consider keeping the dab (with the station removed).
"Temple block" has a marginal PT of Wooden fish, but it needs a {{redirect}} hatnote leading to wherever Temple Block goes. Certes (talk) 11:02, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
(a stalker writes) "Temple block" is specified in several C20 Western music scores - link (to which I'll add Britten's Cantata Academica and Noye's Fludde, ref). It's an unusual instrument, but should be in every battery's armoury, and is a likely search term. Narky Blert (talk) 16:54, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
But if you google any capitalized variation of "temple block", there are page after page of hits about the instrument. Even though "Temple Block" is a better title-match with the area of LA, my feeling is that more readers are looking for the instrument. If you google "Temple Block Los Angeles", you see that some sources use "Temple block", so I don't think we should put too much weight on the capitalization. I think Temple Block should be considered an alt-cap form of Temple block. MB 17:07, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Editing the "Teeside" typo

Hi, Yesterday morning I started correcting the error of writing "Teeside" for "Teesside" in all article pages where the search box could find it. Suddenly I noticed that this correction was being applied to many pages automatically just before I could do so. Eventually I worked out that you were doing this using WP:JWB. That was fine by me and thank you.

Another similar need for correction is the use of "Adbul" for "Abdul". I could just carry on and correct these by hand, but it's temptng to try WP:JWB, which I've never used before. The documentation looks a bit forbidding. Have you any advice? SamuelTheGhost (talk) 19:40, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

@SamuelTheGhost: When a typo fix appears on my watchlist I usually have a look for similar cases. Only one of the pages you fixed was on my watchlist, and I didn't realise that you were already fixing others. The first thing is to ask for authorisation; see WP:AWB/CP#Guide. Approval should be a formality for someone with your record. Once your name is on the list, follow the simple instructions at User:Joeytje50/JWB. The same authorisation lets you use WP:AWB, a more powerful but more complicated alternative to JWB. A knowledge of regular expressions will help you get the best out of JWB or AWB but is not essential. If Adbul is consistently a typo for Abdul, you could consider adding it to the automatically fixed typo list at WP:AWB/T (long page) or suggesting it on its talk page. Good luck, and let me know if I can help further. Certes (talk) 20:03, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
I should add that the request page for JWB/AWB access is Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/AutoWikiBrowser and you should mention why you want approval (typo fixing is a valid reason). Certes (talk) 20:30, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks very much for your reply. I'm going to give it a go. I'm waiting for permission at the moment. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 11:48, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
@SamuelTheGhost: JWB needs a list of pages to edit (bottom left). Search results can be tricky to transfer. I've installed User:The Transhumanist/SearchSuite.js, which adds a link in the left sidebar to hide found text leaving only the titles, which can be copied and pasted into JWB as a block. You still need to remove annotations such as "(redirect from Foo)". AWB has a built-in search. Certes (talk) 15:18, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
I started using JWB one page at a time, and soon got into a rhythm where I was working fairly fast and could check for appropriateness in each case, so I did the lot that way. I didn't fully understand User:The Transhumanist/SearchSuite.js in any case but that's OK. Thanks for your help. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 12:25, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Additions to Niall Dunne's Wikipedia page

Hi,

My name is Sophie and I am contacting you because I saw that you have previously made edits to Niall Dunne's Wikipedia page in 2019. I have some additions I would like to add to his page but because of WP:COI (Conflict of Interest) I am unable to add them myself and was hoping you could help me.

I work at Polymateria which is the organisation which Niall is now CEO for and would like to add this information to his Wikipedia page as a new section. If you are happy to help update his page for me I am happy to provide the text.

I am also fairly new to Wikipedia editing/articles so please do let me know if there is another way I should be making these edit requests.

Many thanks and hopefully speak soon, Sophie

SophieStromback (talk) 15:53, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

@SophieStromback: Hi Sophie. I know nothing about Niall Dunne; my only involvement as been fixing a wikilink to indicate which People's Climate March was intended. It sounds as if edit requests on the talk page may be the best way forward here. The information at COI and possibly UPE may also be relevant. Hope that helps, Certes (talk) 17:05, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Certes, Thank your response, very helpful! I have now gone ahead and created a edit request on [Dunne]'s talk page. Is this something you would be able to approve? Thanks again! Sophie SophieStromback (talk) 16:21, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

@SophieStromback:That sounds like the best way forward, but I'll leave any actual change to someone who knows the subject area. I'm more of a wikignome who makes numerous edits such as fixing typos and broken links without being familiar with the topic of every article I edit. Certes (talk) 16:30, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Ok, excellent - thank you so much for your help so far :) SophieStromback (talk) 18:02, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

New User Here :D - Help?

Hello Certes,

I hope that you are well.

I am new to the editing of Wiki Pages and spotted that you had recently done some editing in (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Trains#UK_station_edits). I wondered if I might be able to highlight something with you for editing by a member of WikiProject Trains as I am not entirely confident with how to do it (I'm learning :) )

On the page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrington_West_railway_station), the station is said to have opened on 16th December 2019. This is incorrect. The page (https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/WAW/details.html) is being cited for this, however, as the Retail Supervisor who was on shift here the day we actually opened, Sunday 15th December 2019, I know that the information being displayed is currently incorrect.

Hopefully one of the users of WikiProject Trains will be able to see to this at some point.

Many Thanks, LDEvs — Preceding unsigned comment added by LDEvs (talkcontribs) 06:55, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello LDEvs and welcome to Wikipedia! If you have a reliable source for the information then you can just edit the page yourself. What you say sounds correct, as I know that GB timetable changes happen on a Sunday and the station has Sunday services, but I'm not an expert. If you would like more help, just leave a message at the bottom of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains. I've left a few other useful links on your talk page. Happy editing, Certes (talk) 11:47, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Most sources talk about the official opening on Monday. The only concrete source I can find for trains quietly starting to call the previous day is [2]. You could cite [3], [4] or [5], but all are predictions rather than reports. This report [6] mentions a Sunday train and strongly implies that it ran on 15 December without explicitly stating a date. You may have better local sources. Certes (talk) 13:22, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Certes, Thank you for your quick response. I'll have a shot at editing it myself and see how I get on. I'll take a look at what you've left on my Talk Page too :D Gonna have a dig through and see what source I can find for the open date but I know for sure that we were open on the 15th ... I even have the first ever ticket served from the station. Many thanks for your help! - LDEvs — Preceding unsigned comment added by LDEvs (talkcontribs) 07:30, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Prank or realistic

Hello Certes,

We Burmese people have noticed you have changed 2020 Myanmar National League's foreign players by adding nonsense.

3 questions 1. Are you Thai? 2. Why did you edit that disastrous? 3. Do you hate Myanmar?

You editing the table is fantastic, but you editing the Foreign Players is just a bunch of stuff. Please let me know what you wanted to do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RomeluSued (talkcontribs) 08:35, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

@RomeluSued: I have only made one edit to 2020 Myanmar National League or related pages, which was to correct a spelling mistake from "Untied" to "United". I have never changed its list of players nor added any other content. I am British and I have no personal feelings for or against either Thailand or Myanmar. You may have confused me with another editor but, if you do contact them about their edits, please assume good faith. Certes (talk) 11:45, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Dabs

Hi Certes -- Thanks for that edit to Jonathan Dunsby; I used to check all links for dabs religiously but recently I've been relying on the orange-colour-coding gizmo; clearly it only works for certain dabs and not for others! Bother, that was actually quite a time saver. Cheers, and happy 2021, Espresso Addict (talk) 03:00, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

@Espresso Addict: The orange gizmo still works but Schoenberg isn't a dab. The primary topic, which hardly any articles mention and no one ever links to, is the surname. You're far from being the only one who finds that so unlikely that they didn't even check for it. In my recent purge of widely linked surname pages, Schoenberg came second with 95 links (almost all for Arnold), second only to Zunz. I now have a new toy which e-mails me whenever a new link to Schoenberg appears. Certes (talk) 12:18, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation, that's good to know. And thanks also for systematically checking these, it's a very useful service. On Schoenberg, my personal opinion is that it should link to the composer (who is so rarely referred to with a surname that I didn't actually know it), but I'm probably not the best judge. Cheers, and happy new year, Espresso Addict (talk) 23:24, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, it's great to be appreciated! We've fixed a few of the worst offenders (who'd have thought the primary topic of Burgers was a surname?) but we should probably start a few more RMs. Certes (talk) 23:28, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Indeed, burgers was idiotic, even though variants on Burger are a common surname (presumably meaning ~citizen), it would relatively rarely be pluralised in that meaning (I naively type, but on clicking find actually there are several... the wonders of Wikipedia :)). Keep up the good work! Espresso Addict (talk) 02:10, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Biodiversity Park, Visakhapatnam: Revision history

Hai Certes, Thank you for the edit you made. I would like to re edit it to only family Lycaenidae with out mentioning the common name Blues, because park includes the butterflies of all other subfamilies, of the family Lycaenidae. In old traditional books, common name Blues was used to the members of the family Lycaenidae. That is why, I am editing it, by deleting common name 'the blues'. thanking you, regards, --Bmantha (talk) 12:52, 8 January 2021 (UTC)(Dr. Rama Murty)

Hai sir, I found another common name for the entire family Lycaenidae. They are commonly called as 'gossamer-winged butterflies'. Hence I am inserting this. I am new to this wikiworld in editing. Inconvenience caused if any is regretted. Once again I am extending my thanks to the correction you made. regards --Bmantha (talk) 13:13, 8 January 2021 (UTC) (Dr. Rama Murty)

Thanks for your help, Bmantha. I have no idea how wide a range of butterflies are in that park; I just wanted to divert the link from Blues (the musical genre) to something more relevant. What you've done looks great, though both wikilinks go to the same article and you could safely unlink one of them if you prefer. Certes (talk) 13:30, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Reversion to Adventure game

Hi, were you aware that you reverted my edit back to a revision which also "duplicates" the word "game" from the title? Huggums537 (talk) 14:04, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

Short descriptions appear alongside the title and don't need to repeat anything that the title conveys, but sometimes there really isn't a sensible phrase which avoids duplication. "Video genre" doesn't work because the topic is a type of game rather than a type of video. If you can find a better wording, please go for it! Certes (talk) 18:51, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
But, isn't "Video game genre" a rather over-generalized description that doesn't really distinguish it from any other style of video game, and if we have the title to do that job for us, then of what actual use are the descriptions if we could label all types of video games as "Video game genre"? Huggums537 (talk) 19:14, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
We can label all types of video games as "Video game genre", and we probably should. The article title, which appears alongside, tells the reader which of those genres the article describes. It's standard practice. For example, Ficus (gastropod) has short description "Genus of sea snails", and so do dozens of similar articles. I was about to point you towards the current discussion at Wikipedia talk:Short description, but I see you've already contributed. What we need to distinguish from is other articles with similar titles but different topics, such as Adventure board game and TV show The Adventure Game. It's a bit like the disambiguation page entry, which reads Adventure game, a computer game genre rather than Adventure game, the adventure computer game genre. Certes (talk) 19:46, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
Ok, yeah I see that the link I provided actually says, "distinguishing between articles with similar names", I guess I just think we should be distinguishing more. Huggums537 (talk) 20:19, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

32- Sport

Hi,

The edit in reference to Cricket was done to reflect the significance of the number 32 in this particular sport. Can you please elaborate on what the concern is here before deleting? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robertch28 (talkcontribs) 14:40, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

@Robertch28: The concern is that the entry is not really about the number 32. Lots of things happened 32 years ago. Listing them all on 32 or 32 (number) would create clutter which obscures the more relevant entries. It would also create a duty to move them all to 33 on the appropriate dates and to 34 the year after, etc. If you disagree, please raise the matter in a new section on Talk:32 (number), and let's see if there is a consensus to add such entries. Certes (talk) 15:13, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

I've taken the liberty of adding you to Category:Wikipedians who patrol bluelinks, in case an overzealous WP:CFDite tries to speedy the category before you upload User:Certes/sandbox2 and add it to Category:Wikipedia:WikiProject Bluelink patrol. Narky Blert (talk) 21:23, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Revert of my edit.

I understand why my edit was reverted. However, when I type "2^31" on the search bar (desktop, not sure about mobile), the system completely ignores the ^ for some reason. This is not the case for "2^31-1". Is it just me? I tried this multiple times and it always just lead to 231 with no (redirected from 2^31) message on the top left.108.46.173.109 (talk) 03:07, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. The search bar shows a list of article titles (and redirects) similar to the term you type in. For 2^31-1, there is a redirect with that title, so it's shown first in bold. Having shown any exact match, the search algorithm then shows near misses. It seems to give letters and digits more weight than punctuation. (Readers may well type a space where Wikipedia uses a comma but are less likely to use a P where the title has a Q.) So 2311 El Leoncito appears second but 2^61-1 only tenth. (Exact results will vary from time to time but the principle holds.) Wikipedia has no article on 2^31, nor a redirect, because the obvious target 2,147,483,648 has no article. The most relevant article is 2,147,483,647 and a redirect to it, 2^31-1, comes up as the first search suggestion when I type 2^31, with 231 in ninth place. I think search is working well in this case. Hope that helps, Certes (talk) 11:21, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, I notice that when I press the enter button, it just leads to 231. The suggestions are great but since 2^31 is so short, you might not see the suggestions when you are just speedily typing "2^31".14:21, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
So it does, which seems odd. Technically it's not a redirect but it's not the behaviour I'd have expected from CirrusSearch. It may be one for WP:VPT if you want to raise the matter further. Certes (talk) 14:25, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Template and module

Can you pliz help or give some suggestion with some portal module and template using lua in Meitei wikipedia main page [7] we are facing some technical problem in the main page which would lead to specific portals ꯂꯨꯋꯥꯡ (ꯆꯥ) 13:05, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't read Meitei (or even have the fonts to display it properly). All I can suggest is that you replace "Portal:Arts" etc. by the names of actual portals which exist on that Wikipedia. By the way, you may want to protect that main page against changes by "normal" editors such as me. Help:Lua and WT:Lua may be able to help you further. Certes (talk) 13:55, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Kentucky Colonel rollback

User:Certes Sorry I rolled back one of your edits. See Transylvania Company and Nashville Company or Virginia Company these were not military they were civil land companies. All colonels, setting up colonies, under the authority of Governors with no military purpose, rank or duty. Problemsmith (talk) 15:23, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

@Problemsmith: Well spotted and thanks for letting me know. I assumed a company run by a Colonel would be military, but it looks as if I got this one wrong. Certes (talk) 16:58, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

I saw you recently edited Aza. AZA was just created. Did you see that? Do you think the capitalization difference warrants a separate dab? MB 16:49, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

@MB: I hadn't noticed that AZA was new. The entries do fall into two distinct groups – someone typing AZA in capitals is unlikely to want Aza, Azerbaijan – but I think both pages are small and simple enough to merge per WP:DABCOMBINE. Certes (talk) 23:50, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
Done. Thanks for the feedback. MB 00:41, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Any luck with the Dispenser tools? I haven't been able to get Dabfix to work.

@Vmavanti: Dabfix isn't working for me either. Databases have moved, and no one is maintaining the software to follow them around. Some tools such as Dablinks still work. Certes (talk) 19:07, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Big idea

Hi Certes: I and others use {{Transclude files as random slideshow}} to present slideshows of general images in portals, and it works fine. The big idea is whether or not there would be a way in Lua to include an article link with each image. For example, if the template pulls images from three different articles, would there be a way to automate it to include a "Read more" link (in bold, like other such links in portals) at the bottom-right of the template, with the correct article links being displayed relative to the article where the image is transcluded from? This would vastly improve portals, in part because some images do not include the article's title in them. North America1000 12:28, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

@Northamerica1000: I've prototyped that at Module:Random slideshow/sandbox. If you pretend to edit that sandbox (no need to change anything) then preview a portal with it, you should see the links. However, many of them are to a generic article, e.g. Portal:Australia linking to Australia, and not particularly relevant to the image. What do you think? Certes (talk) 14:10, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. {{Transclude files as random slideshow/sandbox}} seems to be working fine, at least on the Telephones portal, which I have been working on. Check it out. I feel that a generic link is better than having no link at all. One strong personal preference is to remove the ellipsis after the "Read more". I find it to be unnecessary, very outdated and even arcane. Internet users know that an active blue link leads to a new page. Removal of the ellipses also gives pages a cleaner layout, in my opinion, rather than having a bunch of ... littering pages ... in every ... other box.... North America1000 21:04, 22 May 2021 (UTC) ...
How about clarifying what the visitor could read more about, by replacing "Read more..." by the title of the page containing the image? Now available in sandbox. and visible on Portal:Telephones. That will also avoid disappointment when someone clicks through to the generic article about the portal's whole scope. Certes (talk) 21:25, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes! You're a mind reader. Perfect. This could be added to the template itself now and it would be way better for portals compared to having no links. North America1000 21:37, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
It passes the regression tests, so I've promoted this change from the sandbox. Please feel free to fix or revert if something bad happens. Certes (talk) 21:49, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
T h a n k s! Looks real nice in the portals I maintain (e.g. Telephones, Coffee, Liquor, etc.)
North America1000 22:25, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

And another thing...

So, from what I understand, using the standard portal links in articles with the framed box doesn't show up in mobile view, whereas, if I'm not mistaken, using the inline format does show up on mobile phones. Am I mistaken, or on the right path here? North America1000 01:38, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Boxed

versus inline

Portals portal
I didn't know that, but viewing this discussion on mobile suggests that you're right. I'm not sure which to use. Many portals still look a mess on mobile, and there may be an argument for advertising them only on desktop. Certes (talk) 10:00, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Well, in that mobile view the boxed doesn't show up at all, whereas the inline does. Looks like I'm going to use inline portal links exclusively from this point onward. I've seen discussions about this general topic somewhere or another a while back, and people were saying that the boxed version wasn't showing up. This still appears to be the case. Might as well use the link that works on PC and mobile, particularly per how mobile devices are so popular nowadays. North America1000 10:18, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
P.S. If you get bored, you can listen to some interesting phone sounds at the new Portal:Telephones/Selected audio page. North America1000 10:25, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
