A Fond Hello

If you're an idealist, I'm a cynic. I've recently run into several people on wikipedia that are not vandals but what I feel are a bigger threat to wikipedia, people that truly believe they are right. Anyway, although we've never crossed paths (I stumbled upon your page via the trifecta userbox, in case you were curious) on an article, I enjoyed your user page (although I thought the daily deeds section was a bit spurious) and felt compelled to leave a comment. It's clear to me that you don't think of yourself as a leader, at least not any more than being a mother implies, but to simply refer to you as leading by example doesn't sufficiently capture it. Perhaps it is better put by Ray Kroc when he said, "The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves." Here's my thanks to you, not for raising the standards of articles but of Wikipedia.

Your Essay

Hi Catherine. I have loved the essay which heads your talk page. Your style and message reminds me very much of the writings of Beatrice Warde the American writer about printing and typography. She penned the famous broadside This is a Printing Office ... which adorned many hot-metal printing office from the mid 1930s onwards. Like WP it also got translated into many languages. Your broadside is great stuff! Congratulations! How do we get it on the Main Page??. I shall welcome your technical advice, please. In the printed version of BW's text some words are highlighted in red. Is it possible to do this in Mediawiki? The layout of the text on the BW page is as it was printed, but I have to smallify some of the lines to replicate the emphasis she gave to the original. It's in their cover feature on how to create sites with impact. They highlight "Ten sites that have instant impact", and Wikipedia is one of them. There's a screenshot of the wikipedia.org portal, and they say "Wikipedia pages aren't much to look at. The collaborative encyclopedia overcomes this with two landing pages. The first is a high-impact splash page with language options, search and navigation, while the second highlights current content." John Taylor articles

Hi Catherine, I am curious to know about your interest in articles with this name. I have a biography of John Taylor 1779-1863, an English mining enginer and and engineer. I will write a WP piece about him when I have finished with the Beatrice Warde saga. As well as her piece I have had to write more than half a dozen more from scratch to complete the background. Thanks for your message, I see there are 34 John Taylors in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, so there is a way to go. UK and N Ireland public library subscribers have just gained free access by logging on with their library IDs. and I can do the same with the online version of The Times. Delete request

Hi Catherine -- I found you on the list of current sysops and you're just so darn welcoming, I thought I'd ask you for help! I uploaded a photo yesterday for use in an article on Princess Märtha Louise of Norway. It's the lower photo of her at a book signing. Unfortunately I uploaded an uncropped version first and it's really ugly. I corrected it with a newer version but the old one is still there waiting for a sysop to delete it. Could you? We do have a lot in common! :) It's rare to run into women who were around at the beginning of the early days of home computing. We're always really cool people, I've found! Do you ever miss that modem dialing sound? :) My girls and I have loved homeschooling (we get a super curriculum from K12. Very advanced and lots of cross-cultural references, which I like). This fall my two oldest girls will be going to a Montessori school. Wow, will that ever be a change (for me & them!). Dear Catherine, please allow me to apologize for the very belated reply. Just as I was telling some of my friends, I'm a terrible replier these days; my work, but mostly, our activity at the Comanche Nation Center is really taking all my time. Just today, I drove all the way to Lawton for one of the most beautiful Pow-wows I have ever attended; I even took some pics just upload them to WP!

Anyway, I simply wanted to thank you wholeheartedly for the beautiful and kind words you had the other day regarding me and my humble contribs. Coming from one the greatest Wikipedians I can think of and a truly wonderful person, it really enlihtened my day. Even more: have you ever felt like butterflies flying inside your stomach, and a knot in your throat, with the feeling your eyes suddenly become moist? Reading your beautiful words gave me all that... and yes, I am very emotional, I know - but it's not everyday someone I look up to tells me what you did. So, just simply thank you, Catherine. With people like you around, WP will surely live for a long, long time, I hold no doubts about it.

BTW, your work with Duran Duran is simply amazing. I have loved the band since my teens, but I had never, ever read such a beautiful, neutral and objective article about it. why you are here

I stumbled upon your page from another user's and read your more or less preface and apologia to wikipedia under heading "Why am I here?", and simply put: Well said! Both poetic, and I feel, very apt. I am also an hopelessly addicted editor, though I mostly work at Vicipaedia. I tell the same thing to my students (I teach middle school latin) all the time, check wikipedia, then check every other source that the article suggests for further reading. By the end of every semester, my students are coming up to me telling me about random articles they have researched and I notice them using wikipedia for research in their other classes. question about how to have admin delete duplicate file

You are listed as an admin and may know how this is handled. The Jessie Mae Hemphill image I uploaded in the past was intended to be between 72 dpi and 92 dpi. I got confused and saw my scan said 92 kb and uploaded it but it's causing problems for the photographer, who intended only a smaller file be allowed. If Wikipedia needs a larger one, they should obtain one from someone else, but to use this particular person's photo it should be the smaller resolution. My mistake since I helped do the scan for her. Can someone delete the extra copies? I also messed up and tried to see how the del/rev buttons work but accidentally reverted to an old one once while checking that out. An 80 kb item is up right now but the backup files need deleting to protect the photographer. Or all copies of the photo should be deleted if this can't be done because she does not want a large copy availalbe since people are downloading it and possibly reposting it without a credit. She doesn't want larger res copies out there without people contacting her for one directly.

Do you know how to delete the larger copy in the photo info page? When you go to the photo page, it has a place to delete the larger one but only admins may do this. This is a matter of adhering to what was agreed to by the photographer which was not a large version. It starts to show up places like the news and so forth. Basically the third from the top in the list of revisions at the bottom of the info page is the right one and the bottom (large) one is the wrong one; the top two are extraneous. The one we have and use should be the 80 dpi file and no other. Let me know what to do. I don't want this sitting out this way any longer, exposing the photographer to problems. We can get a different, larger image by some other photographer if we need a large one but if we want to use this one we need to delete the older versions that are large. Clan Munro

I just thought I'd let you know that to say the Munros were a 'peacable' clan is nonsense. Those who know the facts know that the Munros were involved in just as much fighting as everyone else. Much has been said about the Munros which is not true. There nothing wrong with the Munros being involved in violence it was just the order of the day, centuries ago. To be fair they fought respectfully compared to other clans like clan Campbell. However the Munros were always up for a fight and would fight for people other than themselves. Its interesting now to see how certain people would want to cover these things up. I'm currently researching which battles the Munros were involved in during the contiental wars where Robert Munro led 700 members of the clan in the 17th century. Those details will be added shortly. I don't mean to be rude and I understand your work its just people want to know the exciting things about the clans. Every other book and website just lists the same old profile; crest, pipe music and plant badge etc.... but what does that tell you ? I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the current Munros of Foulis whos line who have changed their names to Munro (the previous Chief's mothers maiden name) and that they do not want so much attention but they really seem to dull down the battles and that sort of thing. Maybe they feel it makes them look bad to be descended from people who killed and used violence. There are many other clan associations who are quite open about there battle histories. It wouldn't be a problem if you want to merge your article infomation aswell. Although the current article is getting a bit long so I moved the stuff about Foulis Castle because that has its own page. The list of Munros may have to go to the Munro (disambiguation) page too if more info is to be added.

Your user page has been like a little island of serenity for me. I come here pretty often just to take a deep breath, especially if I've been wrestling with despair over Wikipedia's future, or bruised trying to make peace among some rather strident people. The last few days on Wikipedia have been difficult, and things aren't going so well at home, so your page meant all much more today; I couldn't go without saying "thank you".

On a happier note, I had a Duran Duran question. I seem to remember a beautiful wooden sailboat in their videos; do you know anything about it? Laurence Baxter

I have removed the Prod notice on this article. Prof. Baxter clearly passes WP:PROF. One of the criteria is "The person is regarded as an important figure by those in the same field", and the fact that his university established an annual lecture in his memory and that eminent statisticians have delivered the lecture is ample proof that he meets this. Thanks for your kind words, Catherine. I've been getting some practice lately on writing biographies for Wikipedia, and there was some good information on Nigel at IMdB and on his own site. It just needed sorting into sections.

The one thing I haven't cracked yet is how to add citations linking to notes.

Wow!

Did you know that you're just about the only person I've run across online who's actually GOTTEN the reference I made with my username without me even having to drop a single clue?? I am serious. I have it as my Last.fm username, I use it for my Gmail... I use it SO many places and no one seems to get its meaning. Until now, that is. You are awesome. And thanks for the welcome. I've added Duran Duran to a lot of the dynamic song lists (e.g. the List of protest songs one) but have never really gone past the main DD profile because I've thought said profile was perfect. It truly is. It's the best piece of writing about the band I've ever read. I love it to bits and have linked to it numerous times during Serious Musical Discussions.

BTW, you're the same person behind the Timeline, aren't you? If only you knew how many times I've used that site.... It's really been a nearly-endless fount of knowledge from which I've consumed far more than I could ever replenish. Thank you for doing that for us fans. Oh yes, that's actually why I picked the nickname "krushsister" in the first place, i.e. only the Hardcore Fans would be able to get the reference. But I guess I became a bit tired of all that mystery after hanging around non-fans who wouldn't have gotten even a more overt reference, so ta-da, instant sentiment explainer, I guess/hope. Thanks for the offer of assistance. Wikipedia sometimes appears to me to be this gargantuan monster being where everything goes against logic, but I'm slowly learning bit by bit, and besides, I've only been here for eight months, and only been registered for six.

BTW, I took a major, major step in my Wikistence. Major. MAJOR. Currently it's just a submission to a "list of proposed WikiProjects" page, but I'm hoping to garner enough interest to make it worthwhile to actually have such a thing exist. I'm saying this to you because I know that as a fellow Duran Duran fan, you must be New Wave-friendly. And as a much more experienced Wiki Editor Being, maybe you could tell me what I could do to improve the page and/or the submission. That advice would be highly appreciated. Tape recorder

It looks like an interesting challenge; I'll try to take a look at it late next week when I have some extra time. I'm totally baffled by the Brezhnev-era Soviet tape recorder diagram; aside from being in such strange color choices and having an excess (and redundancy) in labeling, the entire image looks more like some sort of space-age tricorder than it does a simple tape recorders. I don't know much about tape recorders but I'm sure I can cobble something together. --Fastfission 16:55, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Lol, if only the vandals realized that hitting one of the anti vandalism bots is the fastest way to get blocked... oh well. In any case, {{indefblock}} is better for when you indef block a user, I've seen {{vandalblock}} used too - it's more or less a personal pref. Pretty much when it comes to vandal only accounts, they get blocked, indef :) - as for the all mightly policy, there's nothing that can't be undone, (well except image deletions) - go with your gut feeling most of the time - it's the easiest way to do it -- Tawker 18:10, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Imbrex and Tegula

Using images from Wikinews

I want to place some images (listed below) from the Wikinews article "Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras celebrated by 450,000 people" on the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras page. I checked the image and link sections on the help pages but I cannt find anything on linking to these images. I did find one of your pages linked on the Image Help category page. Can you point my in the right direction or add them yourself and I will check the code.

I'm writing to send a big "thank you" and to ask for your suggestions. The happy news is that we managed to bring Photon out of an edit war and to FA status in about six weeks. It was the first physics FA in roughly a year, and I really do think it's a good article, albeit somewhat technical. There were several dark patches along the road, but your faith in Wikipedia sustained mine through thick and thin; the FA would not have happened without you. So — thanks!

Photon is due to appear this Saturday on the Main Page, and I'm frankly scared silly. An analogous article, Enzyme, is the Main Page article today, and is being hit by vandals every ~20 minutes or so. Do you have any ideas of how we might protect Photon from similar damage? I'm really dreading Saturday, and the horrible waste of time of good editors. Could we maybe lock the article for a day or two? Any other ideas would be really welcome! Hi, I'm a little less panicked now. ;) My fellow editors at Talk:Photon clued me in that there's a policy against locking articles on the Main Page (which I understand). They also encouraged me to relax and let the vandalism happen, then revert after everything calms down. Still, I don't want vandalism early in the day to spoil Photon for all the people who visit it later on. :( I suppose I need even more faith, that all will be well and I should just spend Saturday in my garden. Thank you for taking part in my RfA. The RfA was not successful, mostly because I did a pretty bad job of presenting myself. I'll run again sometime in the next few months, in the hopes that some will reconsider.

In the meantime, one of the projects I'm working on is A Wikimedia Administrator's Handbook. This is a wikibook how-to guide intended to help new administrators learn the ropes, as well as to simply "demystify" what adminship entails. If you are an administrator, please help out with writing it, particularly on the technical aspects of the tools. Both administrators and non-administrators are welcome to help link in and sort all of the various policies regarding the use of these tools on wikipedia in particular (as well as other projects: for example, I have almost no experience with how things work on wiktionary or wikinews). Users who are neither familiar with policy or the sysop tools could be of great help by asking questions about anything that's unclear. The goal is to get everything together in one place, with a narrative form designed to anticipate the reader's next question.

A second project, related but not entailed, is a book on wikimedia in general, with a history of how various policies evolved over time, interesting trivia (e.g., what the heck was "wikimoney" about?), and a history of how the wikimedia foundation itself came about and the larger issues that occurred during its history (such as the infamous "Spanish Fork").

Progress of Wikipedia

Hi, Catherine, out of curiosity and procrastination on a thorny FAC, I compared the article coverage of Wikipedia and the Macropedia and got a pleasant surprise. :) Wikipedia seems to cover most of the Britannica topics and, if you browse through them, the WP articles are pretty good and well-referenced — although the majority are not yet equivalent to the Macropedia article. Something to work towards! I was also surprised to see how systematically biased the Macropedia itself was, although I suppose that's because they have to sell it. My impression is that Wikipedia is already, in many respects, a superior encyclopedia; more topics are covered in depth, and fields seem to be broken up into articles more sensibly; other WP add-ons like Portals, Categories and Article-series boxes make WP that much better. Judging from our recent progress in science, WP's improvement seems to be accelerating, rather than decelerating, too. Totally Inappropriate Block

Admin Glen S has made a totally inapprobriate block here. Please Unblock. There are Two very good reasons. 1- The users are not the same and 2-Just as Important the reason given was evading of block! But the the previous block of 31 hours had already EXPIRED!! 3- As far as I know users do not always choose their ISP address so it wouldn't be intentional (this is moot since these two people are not sock puppets)

Hey CatherineMunro. There is a lively debate about use of promo photos on wikipedia. My name is Jeff and I Do not support the interpretation of WP:FU as implemented by user's like User:Chowbok. They believe that Wikipedia should be free of all promotional photos that are "replaceable with an equivalent" (i.e. an amateur photo from flickr). Their rationale is being debated in many places, and take it a step further believing that all promo photos should be deleted and let someone else deal with finding and uploading a free alternative.

I and many others who support use of fair use promotional photos have not been successful in changing the actions of Chowbok and rampant deletion and changing of many hundred's of useful images from Wikipedia articles continues. One good example is the Jennifer Granholm article which had a great promo photo replaced by a terrible photo. I seek to raise the profile of this issue through challenging promotional photos on high profile article's like Duran Duran which is a featured article. I'm sorry, really I am, but fair use policy as implemented by Chowbok has left me with few viable options.

I'm sorry to hear you're leaving us...I'm sure you have good reasons. At least you know WP will always be here if you get the urge to poke your head back in sometime. Unfortunately, for fairly obvious reasons, I can't delete a user's pages on the request of an anonymous IP account that could be anyone. All you need to do is log in to your account, and add {{db|reason}} to your pages. I will add them to my watchlist, and delete them myself once you've asked for deletion through the proper log-in.
