Maps
[edit]Is there a reason for making mass changes to all the maps without discussion? It's nice to be bold, but you need to make sure you have the consensus before making these kind of changes. Your version is against the Manual of Style in terms of appearance and format (Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is always preferred over JPEG). Alex ShihTalk 13:55, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ainu language, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Chinese, English and Japanese (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Munda population
[edit]In this edit to Munda people you entered a total population figure that contradicts the sub-population figures, and doesn't match the cited sources (although it isn't clear that joshuaproject.net is a reliable source for population figures). Would you clarify where your figure came from, and if possible reconcile the sub-population figures? --Worldbruce (talk) 05:44, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Worldbruce: Yeah sorry about that. I was using Census of India datafiles for all the Indian states in which the Munda live. That was an incomplete number, and so I will revert that edit. However, I will probably make a full-scale population figure change after I had all data from censuses in all countries where Mundari live, as I should have done in the first place. That was an incomplete edit, I just wanted to save my work so that I did not lose it for a more accurate estimate. I will fix the issue soon, sorry for the inconvenience. The Joshua Project is not a very good source, and so I think replacement would be a good idea.C1MM (talk) 02:23, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

Number of speakers Slavey-Hare language
[edit]Hello, Last month you adjusted the number of speakers in Slavey language. But I think maybe your first figure (2120) is correct. You have changed it to 4335 but doesn't that involve a double-count? At the moment I'm translating the article on Slavey-people in Dutch and I would like to add some information on the language. Best regards, Koos van den beukel (talk) 20:27, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
Ethnologue data for KS languages
[edit]Hi,
The Ethnologue data for many KS languages is spurious. The number for a language may be applied to its dialects, multiplying the total unrealistically, or ethnic populations may be used for speaker populations, etc. That's why I added the notes that you've been deleting. In general, Ethnologue is not a RS, though it's often all we have (or other sources may be even worse). It was not intended as a linguistic reference, though the editors are now making an admirable effort at making it more reliable now that it's linked to the ISO standard. — kwami (talk) 16:46, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
US Census data is not reliable
[edit]I keep reverting your attempts to use US census data for speaker numbers on languages. I would think you'd get the hint. US Census data is not reliable for language speaker numbers because it is self-reported and not checked for accuracy by linguists. It includes everyone who knows two words and thinks "I speak the language". Please stop changing speaker numbers for Native languages of the US based on US census data. --Taivo (talk) 05:41, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Santa
[edit]Hi C1MM, I just saw you did a clean-up at Santa language. Not so sure at this one - it was like this for several years, and it might have been left as a construction site for a little bit longer, so that I can make some improving edits without necessarily deleting untidy content. But there's another issue: Santa has some additional consonants (see Talk page!) that have not been integrated into the table since it doesn't contain the required lines. Also, velar comes before uvular. If you're comfortable with tables, it would be appreciated if you could take care of this. G Purevdorj (talk) 16:20, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for identifying that Puredvor, the source I used did say Santa had 29 consonants, but only put 22 (sorry). I have just added those last 7 consonants, and fixed the issues with the velar and uvular consonants. C1MM (talk) 01:56, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
Salt with censuses
[edit]Hi, you might want to avoid citing census data about Australian languages. I'm not acquainted with how that census works, but it's extremely unlikely the data about speakers of languages to be anything by self-reported. This only tells us how many people chose the relevant option in the questionnaire, this doens't tell us how many people actually speak the language. There are usually discrepancies between the two because of the way language is seen as a marker of ethnic identity and people claim to "speak" the language of the community they're in (a claim recognised by others in that community) without having much (if any) knowledge of it. – Uanfala (talk) 23:18, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
- I absolutely see the issue with censuses of this type, especially due to discrepancies in census data between self-identified knowledge and actual fluency. The Australian census, from what I am reviewing, does seem to have that issue. Therefore, I will stop using census data, and start putting in info more in line with what I put on the Tharawal language page, which was that the speakers were self-identified. I absolutely see your point and will refrain from such activities in the future. In some cases, however, the census data does match up with actual data from the field, and so I think that instead of outright criticizing the census, we should evaluate its veracity based on previous field reports. C1MM (talk) 03:41, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
Kundal Shahi language
[edit]Hi, I'm not sure I get the point of what you did at Kundal Shahi language. Is there any benefit in separating out the aspirates like that? To me it looks a bit jarring to have one phonation type (aspiration) interleaved into the manner columns, and the other two (voiced and voiceless) remaining as rows. – Uanfala (talk) 15:00, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
Takelma language / Consonants
[edit]Hi, I have seen that you have restructured the consonant chart of Takelma in various ways. Which is good but unfortunately, the original data in the table as you have found it was partially incorrect in the first place. So I hope you won't mind that I have replaced the whole thing with a new chart based on Sapir, similar to the one in Golla's "California Indian languages". Especially, I have placed the stops and the affricate together in a single row, just to avoid the lone ejective affricate, and also to be more in line with the phonemic system of Takelma. Austronesier (talk) 18:12, 23 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for putting in correct data. I understand putting stops and affricates together, although most consonant charts on Wikipedia also separate the lone palatal approximant /j/ from postalveolar consonants, so having one consonant in a row is fine. I don't think it will be weird to have the lone ejective affricate there, since there are multiple other consonants that fill up the space. C1MM (talk) 19:48, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Hi,
I tried finding the discoverer's paper online, but the only linguistic treatment I could find was this. That certainly has an agenda, but it's the only thing I've seen that references the lit, so I redirected the articles accordingly. If you know of anyone who's reviewed Dr Mohanty's data (it doesn't seem that Dr Dash has), please let me know. — kwami (talk) 08:50, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

New speaker numbers
[edit]Please be more careful when replacing {{Infobox language}} references to Ethnologue with references to the Census of India. Don't break references elsewhere in the article, as you did in these edits at Santali language or this edit at Kukna language.
Other editors have raised concerns about using census data instead of linguist's data for number of speakers. Using Census of India also has the disadvantage of ignoring speakers outside India, such as the Santali speakers in Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. It's wise on Wikipedia to use in infoboxes a conservative source like Ethnologue that facilitates apples-to-apples comparisons. In the body of the article you can explore the range of numbers with a full explanation of differences in timing, methodology, and scope. --Worldbruce (talk) 17:47, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Re-arranging phonetic charts
[edit]Hello C1MM, Can you please stop rearranging the consonant and vowel sound charts? I had to revert a bunch of pages that you rearranged because the way you had fixed the charts had taken way to much space on the Wikipedia pages. The reason why some charts have some abbreviated words in them (ex. palatalized; pal.) is strictly to save space on the pages. Also I am aware that I tend to differentiate the terms bilabial and labiodental, as bilabial and labial. It just makes the charts look less awkward as well as the pages themselves. It's also less awkward for other viewers to view the charts. Please leave the already-added charts alone so it looks less awkward. Fdomanico51997 (talk) 05:07, 7 September 2018 (UTC)
extinction dates in Unesco's AWLD
[edit]Hi,
Re. this edit, that just means that the language was extinct in 2007, not that it went extinct then. Since there were no full speakers in 1965, it's more likely it went extinct before then.
From this, it looks like reading the AWLD may be like trying to interpret population dates in Ethn -- that is, that you need to check their source.

Infobox images
[edit]Hello C1MM, Please stop immediately the infobox changes you are making to large numbers of pages. All infobox changes require WP:CONSENSUS and your edits with cursory uninformative summaries, with no justifications provided, can be quite harmful. So, please stop! If you would like to make a change to an infobox of a subject you know well, please make a proposal on its talk page, explaining your reasons, and invite comments. You should only be making such changes after you are confident that there is a consensus for them. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 09:10, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Kautilya3: Sorry for doing an edit blitz, but my edits have not been harmful or damaging to the pages in any way, and it is often obvious what I am doing: especially when I mention "updated map:" the only map on the page is that in the infobox. Please tell me how adding more accurate locator maps is harmful, although I should have posted more detailed edit summaries. To your second point, that these changes require consensus and making a full proposal, comment, consensus then edits, I think you are being slightly too dogmatic without thinking of the practicalities. For an article on a state or major city that will have significant traffic, of course edits of the kind I am doing should have consensus and comments. But topics like the district pages of India have very few editors in the first place looking at them and even less at the talk pages, and so waiting say a few weeks for a response or maybe months for people who actually take the time to look at the talk page and write responses is counterproductive especially when the edits I am proposing are not malicious or harmful in any way. Response rates on these talk pages are quite low: I have added several talk page posts to far more important articles such as that on Babasaheb Ambedkar, but have not received a response in months. If you put a limit, for instance, that you have to get consensus from 3 or 5 other editors for each somewhat significant change (adding an image, updating population figures or demographics) on these far less traffic-heavy pages you will not be able to make any changes in a meaningful amount of time. If you oppose all the edits I have been making for Assam, then ban my account or go through my entire edit history and revert every single change I have ever made to articles about India's districts. I have done similar things for all the districts of Karnataka, most districts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and hundreds of other district articles and have never had people reverting my edits over, for instance, a lack of consensus over the image map I added, until now. C1MM (talk) 03:38, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, probably most of your edits in the blitz were benign. But the first edit I ran into is this one, which had an edit summary of "changed image", whereas in reality it removed a map showing the course of the river and inserted a photograph of the river in the plains. This, for a river that flows through the High Himalayas, passing through two countries, with active border disputes, water disputes and so on!
- Please remember that all edits to Wikipedia are subject to review by other editors. The reviewing editors will generally look at diffs. Changes of images won't be apparent in the diffs. So your edit summaries need to state clearly what has been changed and why. Even "updating map" is not clear enough. Why does a map need "updating"? Has its territory changed? Are there reliable sources documenting the change? (By the way, districts often get split, merged or reshuffled and it is a nightmare to deal with them.)
- Infobox images are often controversial. The image needs to be truly representative of the place. If you don't think there is anybody available to discuss, you can at least leave a note on the talk page explaining your choice. I also dare say that you are displaying extreme naivety if you equate Arunachal Pradesh with Chattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. There is no comparison. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 01:21, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
- I would probably be an idiot to think the situation with Arunachal Pradesh or J&K is the same as much of the rest of India. That edit you mentioned was a mistake I should not have made, and I'm sorry for that. I have dealt with those district splittings and reshufflings and that is the main reason I was updating those infoboxes. I had just batch uploaded a lot of new locator maps displaying all current districts of Assam, even Bajali which was formed a few months ago, and was making those changes for that reason.
- Also, for many districts, it is very hard to get images of the district in the first place so giving those who see the page at least a decent idea of what the district looks like, either topographically or culturally is not a bad idea. But you're right on the representative part, and I will be mindful to leave talk page messages in the future. Thanks for reminding me. Also sorry for the slightly belligerent tone in my last talk post. C1MM (talk) 03:07, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

[edit]How are you getting into the language percentages. As per the census 2011 excel sheet, the Bhojpuri and the Nepali figures are well below the Bengali and Assames figures in teh undivided Karbi Anglong district. Please provide the exact link(s) otherwise I'll remove it per WP:SYNTH. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:32, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- That is for the total district, but Karbi Anglong was divided in 2016. Donka circle became West Karbi Anglong district. See "Donka" subheading under Karbi Anglong. Similarly I updated language data for most divided districts except Sibsagar (because the district was not divided on the lines of revenue circles that appear in the 2011 census). C1MM (talk) 15:36, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- OK.. Then we have to explain it in the article. And what about Nagaon district district? How did its percentages change? - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:40, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- That was fixing vandalism. Someone had changed Assamese to Bengali and same in Opposite direction in the pie chart but did a bad job. Sorry I used a default edit summary rather than a more specific one. The Nagaon figures were arrived in the exact same way as the rest of the divided districts. If you want a template on how to include the fact that the demographics are for the separated district you can look at Purba Bardhaman district article.C1MM (talk)
- Thanks, The 2011 census Nagaon district had a population of 2,823,768. Now it seems it has 1,892,550. I want to know which blocks, circles, sub-districts got separated. I'd quote/note it int he article. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:58, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- Or we have to mention that the figures are from the then undivided Nagaon district of 2011. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:34, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- All figures are from the divided district. C1MM (talk) 16:38, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- I got it the first time. I want to know the sub districts/circles etc that are part of it now, so that I can make a quote and efn note in the article since the 2011 source could get readers to different population figures not matching with the source, ergo it is getting into synthesis territory. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:59, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Misleading edit summaries
[edit]Hello, I'm Toddy1. I noticed that you recently made an edit to Kaushambi district and a similar one to Faizabad district in which your edit summary did not appear to describe the changes you made. According to your edit summaries you "Added religion bar chart and languages pie chart", but these were already there. What you really did was to make a load of changes to the infobox, change some URLs and delete lots of content. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks.-- Toddy1 (talk) 10:45, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
- I see your problem. The 'deleting of lots of content' was that the languages section describes major languages, but nearly all languages in the tables I deleted are spoken by at most a few thousand people out of a population of millions. But I will make sure to change my edit summaries which do better at describing changes. C1MM (talk) 16:35, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello sir,
The page has many flaws and authors pov. It's most of the information (including summary) was contributed by 2 editors only. The two were fighting like kids in the talk page as you can see. You can compare the page with Rajputs, Khatri, Vokkaliga and many dominant society of Indian regions. These pages are well constructed by genuine editors from various backgrounds. Literally, The Vellalar page summary is author's pov (their claim starts "seems to be rather"). The page need major improvements, cleanups and more sources.
The Wikipedia's purpose is to benefit readers by acting as a widely accessible and free encyclopedia that contains information on all branches of knowledge. If the page can be edited by admins only, what's the need of wikipedia editors? The information should be contributed by volunteers and genuine editors without any restrictions and opinionated moderators rivalry. I hope you understand my concern. Thanks :) Exhistorian (talk) 18:24, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

- Since Churachandpur district was split recently and existing circles were bifurcated during the split, there is no accurate census data on language/religion for this, Pherzawl or Tamenglong/Noney districts. C1MM (talk) 17:32, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, I know, But that problem is the same as for the other districts too. Almost every district was bifurcated in 2016. Let us continue to document the 2011 data. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 11:38, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Named reference errors in upazilas
[edit]Please try not to leave a trail of named reference errors in your wake as you edit upazila articles, for example Bamna Upazila, Bhola Sadar Upazila, and Lalmohan Upazila in the past few days. --Worldbruce (talk) 14:56, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
- And this week: Barguna Sadar Upazila, Betagi Upazila, and Islampur Upazila (someone tried to fix the last for you, but now the inline citations don't connect to sources that support the content). --Worldbruce (talk) 17:29, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Have a look at these changes. It is a banned sock with Telugu POV, as demonstrated by their previous edits from another IP that is currently blocked. But, have a look at the percentages. Thanks. And do ping me. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:52, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Fylindfotberserk Yes, these percentages are completely wrong. The ones I put up were correct. Will fix this. C1MM (talk) 14:14, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
Hi, could you have a look at the census figures Anupgarh district article as well as Ganganagar district article? Thanks. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 19:01, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
- Figures are correct since Chhatargarh and Khajuwala were removed from dist Anupgarh (see Dainik Bhaskar article in page). I will update language figures to match. Need to change demographics for dist Bikaner as well it seems. C1MM (talk) 15:00, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, can you check the religious affiliation percentages (census 2011) in the Gondi people article? I believe the article has gone through ethnic POV pushes, resulted in changes to these percentages. Thanks. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:42, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
