pLEASE ALLOW CRITICISM OF WIKIPEDIA.

[edit]

CRITICISM MEANS YOU WILL NOT LIKE IT: ACCEPT THAT. wHY HAVE AN ARTICLE NAMED CRITICISM IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO ACCEPT STATEMENTS ABOUT WIKIPEDIA THAT YOU DO NOT LIKE. ParvisStPierre (talk) 00:02, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism means I will say things you do not like: everyone understands that. You should too: you will not like what I say: that is what criticism means. Accept it. Or do you think I will state things you like on the "criticism" page?? ParvisStPierre (talk) 00:06, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

They would have been removed because it was all original research, or at best uncited, and full of opinion. The writing is also very poor. Answer to your question on ArbCom Case

[edit]

Regarding this on the talk page, DungeonSiegeAddict510 confirmed the doxing in this edit on his talk page back in November. No need for him to risk his breaking his t-ban to confirm. — Strongjam (talk) 15:23, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, Titanium Dragon was also doxed. Tutelary was actually doxed twice. Once by Wikipediocracy (in the form of a photo) for inserting some of the material about Quinn and another time by 8chan for noting the pedophilia issue in that site's article.--The Devil's Advocate tlk. cntrb. 07:23, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Also, you should link to the actual case where Starship provided the evidence against Tarc. It is here.--The Devil's Advocate tlk. cntrb. 07:45, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, didnt notice the case had been archived. As for Titanium Dragon, the reason I didnt list him is because (as he commented in the ANI thread) he didn't seem particularly bothered by it and felt his identity was no secret. If @Titanium Dragon: feels I've misrepresented him, I'd be willing to mention him too. Bosstopher (talk) 12:09, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Who I am is a matter of public record (I use this identity all over the internet, and do so in a number of places in conjunction with my real life name - it is more of a pen name than a pseudonym, as I'm not trying to hide my identity), but feeling more or less victimized by it is irrelevant - we should certainly not reward people for overreacting to such things. The group which did this did not realize that my screen name and real name were publicly linked. Doxxing is, fundamentally, a threat and an attempt at intimidation. "If you don't like what you do we'll find your real name (and real photographs of you, in the case of Tutelary) and write an article smearing you." I will note that the reason that they didn't call me misogynistic was probably because they found one of my blog posts about feminism. The thing which is most bothersome about it is that they tried it in the first place, and that Gamaliel expressed his opinion there:
"If we had more power to block obvious SPAs and agenda pushers, then less of this stuff would happen, but every time we even attempt to take action against these types, there’s a chorus of OMG ADMIN ABUSE!!!!1!, and the loudest ones are people from this site. Make up your mind."
Shortly before he applied the first (rescinded) topic ban. Titanium Dragon (talk) 22:17, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I apologise, I wasnt aware about the username being linked to your real life name, and you're right, not feeling victimised doesnt make it justified in any way. Will update. Bosstopher (talk) 23:12, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

How do I do that Drive thing? The only reason I HAVEN'T edited an article itself yet was because I didn't want to go in and muck things up while I still don't know how everything works. Assuming I am not indef banned, this will provide some great hands on experience... if I can figure out how it works. AnsFenrisulfr (talk) 13:03, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there thanks for responding. One of the best (and also worst) things about wikipedia is, that nobody cares what shit you put on an article if it isnt about a so called "controversial topic" such as Israel/Palestine, Gamergate or Tree Shaping. After I first got involved in editing the Gamergate page I started getting worried that people would revert even the most harmless of edits I made to any page, but thankfully (or perhaps not depending on your point of view), it isn't so! It's amazing the feeling of satisfaction you get when you make an edit to an article that isn't reverted after 30 seconds (or maybe I'm just a bit weird). But wikifying is mostly harmless. You dont have to add or take any content, so there's no way for you to end up accidentally defaming someone. See this page for instructions. Also you can get cool snazzy awards, and there's a whole competitive aspect to it. It's not really the most exciting form of editing their is, but it's soothing and you end up learning a lot about random things through wikifying random articles. If you're still very worried about making mistakes, I'd be willing to skulk through your contribs a bit to make sure you haven't accidentally exploded anything. Good luck!Bosstopher (talk) 13:23, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I am not so much worried, as cautious. I am aware of Wikipedia's policy, Be Bold, but Boldness shares a coin with Recklessness. I have chosen to be cautious as I learn how to be a wikipedian, since from my standpoint, it would be the best way to learn. I raise ideas that I believe are valid in talk pages, if I am right, it can be confirmed and I can propose a change. If I am wrong, I can be informed of such, learn where I was wrong, and use that for the future. Unfortunately... it appears my choice to stick to talk pages to avoid people claiming I am a POV pushing SPA... has somehow made people think I am a POV pushing SPA. The irony is palpable. More on topic, I definitely could use someone looking over my shoulder for my first attempts. Wikipedia is a loooot to take in at once, and I have spent quite a few days worth of man-hours going through guidelines and regulations. @_@ AnsFenrisulfr (talk) 13:58, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is there anyway/anywhere I could go to get help editing Wikipedia in real time? If I can be guided through my first edits, I will pick it up quickly. AnsFenrisulfr (talk) 22:41, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, I am soliciting comments for an RfC that is currently open on the "Glengarry Glen Ross (film)" page. There is disagreement about where the film was set (New York vs. Chicago).

One of the issues is whether it is original research to cite to elements in the film itself (including props, dialogue, and a statement in the end credits that it was "filmed on location in New York City") to establish setting.

Response so far in the RfC has been mixed. Comments welcome! Xanthis (talk) 14:16, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reichstag

[edit]

The reason the Reichstag was little-used during the years of Nazi rule is that it had been burnt in a notorious fire. Its symbolic importance is great -- at least among those of us who detest the memory and legacy of the Reich. Thanks so much for your editorial advice. It’s been nice knowing you; have a good life. MarkBernstein (talk) 23:04, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@MarkBernstein: It has now occurred to me that I forgot to follow that link at the end of your blog post (the one linking to the article about the reichstag fire), while making a comment about you failing to follow a link in someone elses post. I apologise for the hypocrisy, insensitivity, and holier-than-though false historical know-it-all posturing. I haven't touched any modern German history in the last 4 years. I was aware of the fire, and it's aftermath but didnt particularly think of the Building as anything holding particular significance. For the insensitivity of my comments I am deeply sorry. Nonetheless I still believe you have misunderstood the comments of Rhoark and colacid, and ask that you refrain from jumping the gun as I have done. Arbitrary section header

[edit]

TIL an inanimate object falls under the "biography of a living person" category. Anyway, there's absolutely no good reason for commenting on a talk page to be a bannable offense, and honestly just shows how far you people are going to keep your little echo chamber alive against all reason and facts. you are the cancer that is killing Wikipedia. Bumblebritches57 (talk) 17:46, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Bumblebritches57: All claims about living people fall under WP:BLP. Suggest you also read WP:NPA your last sentence is a pretty clear violation of that. — Strongjam (talk) 18:07, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Your comment was neither "reason," nor "facts." It was just you insulting someone. Imagine what the reaction would have been if you'd walked into a job interview for Encyclopedia Britannica and that had been the first thing you said (although of course you can obviously get away with a lot more as a free volunteer on a website, there are still limits). If you had proposed, reasonable and factual changes to the article which were backed up by reliable sources, instead of just posting unconstructive attacks on living people, there would have been no reason for you to be topic banned. Please keep this in mind, when editing other topic areas from now on.Bosstopher (talk) 19:08, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I need help

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for your attention. Actually Wikipedia is very extensive and I have not become familiar with it completely. Of course, I have a question. As you know I am interested in Iranian revolution. I saw in this page some information which is true but is not suitable for this page. For example this one: “Led by the leftist intellectual Saeed Soltanpour (later executed by the Islamic Republic), the Iranian Writers Association… ” This information is true, but is not suitable for this page. I think “later executed by the Islamic Republic” is irrelevant to Iranian revolution and must be used in page of Saeed Soltanpour or Islamic republic of Iran or something like that. Am I right? Do I have permission to delete it? Is there a rule in Wikipedia in such cases? Munifi3nt (talk) 08:01, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Munifi3nt: Hey! Wikipedia is RIDICULOUSLY complex, and its hard to learn all the rules at once. Just skim through the most basic ones first, and you should be fine. I'd suggest you be bold and remove that phrase. There's no specific rule about it, and I agree that it's unnecessary information. You shouldn't worry so much about permission. If you do anything that breaks any rules hopefully someone will just revert your edit, and you can learn from your mistake. Especially in this case where you're cutting down unnecessary information. BUT there's an exception. If you are editing an article to put in negative information about a living person, you should be extra careful before making any changes. But in most other cases (unless it's a super controversial article), if you think something will improve an article, do it. This is really oversimplified and has a lot more exceptions, but trial and error is the best way to improve.
P.S Remember to start section headings in articles with a capital letter. Sorry if this all comes across as gibberish. Wikipedia is kind of convoluted.Bosstopher (talk) 22:54, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Factually accurate"

[edit]

This is what Iranian law says:

Legal marriageable age is 20 years for males and 18 years for female, but in specific cases it can be reduced to 18 and 16 respectively. In a book Iran: Country study (p. 114) published by Library of Congress they have slight error because they claim it's 18 and 15, but it may be a little outdated (2008). On previous page they say after revolution limit was reduced to 15 and 13, while I can't find such thing on Iranian parliament archive so it may be false, or they mixed hudud with civil law, or aghd with arusi. Anyway, your claims about 15 and 9 (???) age is simply bizarre and it's nothing more then anti-Iranian propaganda. Of course I'm familiar that there are a lot of internet pages which contain such claims, but they don't count as reliable source since they contradict Iranian law itself. Big irony is that you can find such misinformation even on some "progressive" websites which propagate secularism, free thought, etc. Just beautiful, they're not sheep of clerics anymore, but they became blindly sheep of TV and Internet propaganda. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Cesare Lombroso, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Resurection. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
