Wrong categorisation

Please remove the erroneous Asquith family category from this page. John Jolliffe who was Bodley’s librarian has nothing to do with the Asquiths. Notable Race page rejected

[edit]

Hello. Many thanks for the info you provided for the Contenders Hurdle and the excellent quotation from Nicky Henderson. I am having difficulties getting a new page Draft:Edward_Hanmer_Memorial_Chase published. This race was clearly a major part of the Chasing scene in the eighties (my favourite period) and the precursor of the Betfair Chase, but apparently I have not made a sufficient case for it to be "notable". Similarly it seems my references from Timeform and Racing Post are no longer sufficiently reliable! Any help you can give will be gratefully received. (JockeyColours (talk) 09:07, 23 February 2023 (UTC))[reply]

Like you the 80s are my favourite racing period and I can remember the Edward Hanmer as a significant race - I hadn't figured that the Betfair Chase was developed out of it, but it makes sense now. For some reason, people don't seem to like the RP and Timeform results as establishing notability and while you and I know which races were notable, it's sometimes hard to prove it with sources. I'm not around for a few days but will have a look next week and see if I can find anything to support the notability of the race. Sad to see the Contenders Hurdle disappear, I used to go to that meeting a lot and the 2m hurdle and the Gainsborough were big Cheltenham trials in those times. Now one has gone and the other is a standard handicap. --Bcp67 (talk) 17:47, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JockeyColours I have added a couple of bits of into to the draft mentioning Gold Cup winners, with references. Hopefully might help a bit. Bcp67 (talk) 16:04, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover granted

[edit]

Hello, Bcp67. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Useful links:

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:14, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Timeform

[edit]

Hi, I wonder if you can answer this for me: does a Timeform master rating for a filly or mare include the weight-for-sex allowance? Or does it need to be added? For instance, TF's recent Breeders Cup review on the Sporting Life says "plus [allowance...]". Might that be slightly careless wording, i.e. should read "including allowance?" My reason for asking is that if the female master rating needs the allowance added, then the likes of Indian Skimmer, rated a very good 133, would be a 136+ horse. Thanks Billsmith60 (talk) 14:50, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's an interesting one, and one I don't know the answer to! I've had a look at Timeform's website and their ratings explanation [1], and I think their master ratings don't include any sex allowance - "It is important to mention that all ratings are at weight-for-age, so that equal ratings mean horses of equal merit. Another way of looking at it is to see the universal rating handicap as four handicaps side by side: one for two-year-olds, one for three-yearolds, one for four-year-olds and one for older horses." So I would say if you had a four-year-old colt and filly both rated 100, and the colt carries 9 stone and the filly 8 st 11, the filly is better in at the weights. But the actual master rating would still be 100 for both of them. Does that help? Bcp67 (talk) 14:57, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot about seeing that explanation on their website. But "It is important to mention that all ratings are at weight-for-age, *so that equal ratings mean horses of equal merit."* seems clear enough (the weight allowance *is part of the master rating). With the highest-rated filly ever, Allez France from memory, being 'only' 137, Timeform are arguing that no filly is near being in the top 15 or so all-time greats at 140+ or even in the top echelon of truly outstanding horses at 138 and 139. I find that a bit hard to believe. Ta Billsmith60 (talk)• Billsmith60 (talk) 16:39, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to join New pages patrol

[edit]

Hello Bcp67!

  • The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Notice

The article Esher Novices' Chase has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Lacking sufficient sourcing to demonstrate notability per WP:NEVENT and WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I saw where you edited this race as well as the article for the racecourse itself. I recently came across information on John Musker and thought he might warrant more research with a view to perhaps creating an article for him. As I am not qualified to do an article like this, I am sending a link to the U.S. Daily Racing Form story to you because you have the experience and knowledge in UK racing to examine and create a bio in Wikipedia: https://drf.uky.edu/catalog/1920s/drf1926041601/drf1926041601_1_6 "John Musker Passes Away: One of England’s Most Famous Breeders of Thoroughbreds Taken by Death"
