Bush Stone-Curlew

[edit]

Apologies for moving your clip. I didn't even notice it was a clip rather than a picture. Which I guess sort of highlights my reason for creating a gallery: all those pictures are just making the page messy and difficult to read. While they're all good images most of them aren't realy adding much of value.

But feel free to ignore me. And BTW, now that I've seen it, your clip good work Ethel Aardvark (talk) 02:45, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great work

[edit]

I got a bit too soon on Phylloscopus laetus and was wondering where the image was. Great going. Happy birding on wikipedia :) Shyamal (talk) 09:56, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Shyamal, is it possible to delete a page if created in error?

Tom (talk) 10:06, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can mark it for deletion or delete the text and leave it blank. Other options if it is an incorrect name or a spelling error is to merely redirect the page to the correct page using the sole entry
  • #redirect [[correct page name]]

Administrators can delete the actual physical page if needed. Let me know if there is some help needed there. Phylloscopus laetus was changed to a redirect by User:Smallweed. Shyamal (talk) 10:09, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Antpeckers

[edit]

You've added two images to Jameson's Antpecker, I was under the impression that the species found in Bwindi was Woodhouse's Antpecker (if my memory serves me, I haven't checked my birds of Eastern Africa for a while). Either way, nice catch! I managed to see them in Bwindi too, my guide assured me that they were very rare, and continued to claim this after we saw three more! Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:25, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are definitely issues with Antpecker ID, the current Birdlife/Avibase website (using Clements 6th edition (updated 2007)) lists them as Jameson's (Parmoptila jamesoni), using (Howard & Moore 3rd edition (corrigenda 5)) as Red-fronted (P. rubrifrons) On www.birdforum.net/opus they state "Previously considered a race of P. woodhousei."
Are there any african experts on WP:Birds who might be able to help?
Tom (talk) 02:31, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We have one general taxanomic expert, but he deals with a broader picture. I think we'll go with your ID. Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:41, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

West African Butterflies

[edit]

The pictures are amazing and I think you need to find someone who has access to Torben B. Larsen's Butterflies of West Africa or contact the author himself. I was not able to find his email on the net but should be easy to find. Shyamal (talk) 07:04, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Shyamal, unfortunately it's not available in Brisbane's Library (...and costs $299 for both volumes!), So I'm not sure when I will be able to get back to Africa but I did find this link which might help [1]....appreciate your assistance.
Aviceda talk 07:33, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nice link. Just found this rather outdated reference as well that may have a few of them. [2] Shyamal (talk) 07:42, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Sorry Tom, I'm not familiar with the tools you used, so I can't be much help. I usually just add images manually to my galleries, although I haven't bothered for some time. Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:58, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When this works, it is quite a useful link. Reachable from the commons my contributions->gallery tab [3]

Shyamal (talk) 03:43, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Shyamal, that's a useful tip....I've just uploaded a couple of video-clips but am having problems with formatting [4] do you know where I can find editing tips on formatting media?
The clip is a little large and I would like to position it to the left of the page or resize it maybe?Aviceda talk 06:36, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The recommendation is to just use the image: tag with the same parameters. I have thumbnailed it with left alignment now. Shyamal (talk) 07:10, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly a bit small now, but that is what I was looking for, thanks Shyamal Aviceda talk 07:16, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry

[edit]

Sorry about that I obviously made a mistake. I am currently trying to get rid of the list of unassessed articles for Wikiproject Birds and I presumably did it by accident then. I have removed it. Dixonsej (talk) 17:52, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Birds of Fiji

[edit]

Do you have a copy of Dick Watling's Birds of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga (the latest one, which has the silktail photo on the cover)? I was reading a copy last year in Tonga and realised that the island data for Fijian seabirds in Pratt's The Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific is way general and not a good basis for the List of birds of Fiji. I haven't been able to get hold of a copy, which is annoying, as I'd like to update the list so I can nominate it for a featured list. between all your images and the ones I already had the list is looking pretty sweet, so it would be grand to get it finished off. Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:09, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just bought a copy and it's a great step forward, he also has a list on the web at [5] if you send me a copy I could check through. Aviceda talk 03:48, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't need to send you the list, it is here at List of birds of Fiji. It is only the seabirds that need checking, basically you just need to remove the B symbol where I have them breeding on islands that they don't and replace it with a P. Cheers! Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:36, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Slight problem, Dick has created a distribution bar similar to yours with the first 4 entries the same, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu. Unfortunately I'm not versed with the other island groups that follow, which are Lomaiviti, Yasayasa, Vatulele, Rotuma, Mamanuca & Yasawa, Northern Lau and Southern Lau (in that order) Will check out my literature but you have Gau, Ovalau, Lau, Rotuma following the 'big' four so I will need guidance on these. Aviceda talk 00:36, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ya, that could be tricky. Lets see, Vatulele, Mamanuca & Yasawa go to Viti Levu. Gau and Ovalau are both in Lomaiviti, and I will merge all the data accordingly (which will take me a few hours). Northern Lau and Southern Lau both go to Lau. I can't find any reference to Yasayasa, so ignore it for now. Thanks for your help. Sabine's Sunbird talk 00:52, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have the 1967 Mercer book and some other book by Mayr if that is a help. I am trying to expand a few for DYK but it is really tricky getting info! Collared Lory should be an easy one to expand though. The Myzomela is v. difficult...It is nice getting info that is completely unavailable online though... :)Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 06:14, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Birds of Queensland

[edit]

The most obvious thing to do is de-cap the orders and on;y have them as a subheading once (so for example Procellariiformes followed by Diomedeidae, Procellariidae etc. Best to have the common name of the family present as well to help people, and if you are feeling like you want to push for featured status use the family information blurbs from one of the other 'birds of articles'. Images would be good too. Oh, and absolutely you can use the sandbox in that way. My own subpage User:Sabine's Sunbird/newzealandbird is my attempt to re jig the new zealand bird list. Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:33, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, quick request, could you upload some adult pictures of Channel-billed Cuckoos? I'm planing an expansion of the article but we have two average quality images both of juveniles. Cheers Sabine's Sunbird talk 21:48, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, will upload a couple of images today or over the weekend, will change to Sibley/Monroe classification for Qld list and implement your ideas....any news on Fiji_list? Aviceda talk 02:11, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It looks good now. The Fiji list is just waiting for you to have the time (no rush really, I've been working on and off on it for 2 years already). Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:49, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have uploaded 3, 1 is reasonable the other two a bit poor.[6],[7], [8] Hope they are OK! Aviceda talk 05:54, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sabines, this probably sounds very dumb I've created my new article but my only real worry is the title....how do I change the case of the first letter of queensland to Queensland? Aviceda talk 09:34, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your image

[edit]

If you're quick you'll see your picture of a Channel-billed Cuckoo on the main page! Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:05, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rarities References

[edit]

A single reference at the bottom is probably sufficient, it is what the other featured lists of birds do. By the way it isn't really necessary to break the flow of the list for images. Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:47, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that, though I'm not really sure how to format the images on the list without the images looking a mess, should I use tables? Aviceda talk 02:28, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Images will automatically centre to the right, so there is no need to put that bit of coding in. Don't worry if the image pushes the edit butoons around, it won't affect the readability of the text. Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:09, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Correction

[edit]

Hi Tom, no real protocol, if you find something amiss, you just go ahead and make the changes, leaving information so that future editors know why the change was made. So you can remove the images, add correct images (if available) and leave an edit summary saying "incorrect id" or so. Additionally you can click on the image and go to the description on the commons page (if the image on the English Wiki is just a mirror of the image on the Wikimedia Commons - commons.wikimedia.org - which serves images to all language wikis) and edit the identification notes there as well. That will prevent any editor from re-adding the images to what they think is the article where it belongs. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any further tips. Shyamal (talk) 10:08, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly haven't had much luck with these, nearest birds are about a 3-hour drive. Did get a few shots a few years back....will check. Aviceda talk 06:06, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Is considerably further from me over on the east coast. I think this article could be a Good Article with little ado and possibly Featured at some point. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 06:27, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aww heck, found the same situation trying to photograph a White-breasted Robin, the best effort of which I have left in the aforesaid article's taxobox. The wren image is an interesting one as it appears to be half-way through a moult. If you could crop it I think we should use it, and if something better comes along, it is still useful as a moult image. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:07, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Another article which has proven tricky to find a pic for is Red-capped Robin...ever snapped this one? Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:42, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Cas, I've posted a couple of Red-capped Robins on the article, unfortunately I cropped the WWFW image fairly -drastically already but if I get 5 mins this weekend will have a look. Aviceda talk 21:20, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

more bird pix required

[edit]

I am also working up Willie Wagtail, Red-backed Fairy-wren for FAC, and maybe enlarge Tawny-crowned Honeyeater at some point for DYK. Was wondering whether you'd taken any photos of WWs attacking anything or doing any display. The page has some good pix already. Any female RBFW or any of the thid would be good, just in case you had anything in store....Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:38, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Casliber, will check out the first two, however can't help with Tawny-c Honeyeater (...have only seen it once!) also friend has agreed to the use of his White-winged Fairywren pic, just have to talk him into uploading it for us. Aviceda talk 02:29, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have uploaded Mat's image to the White-winged Fairywren page, probably will need re-formatting Aviceda talk 06:09, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see you met with some success in Fiji.

[edit]

Nice images, particularly the Goshawk (much better than my old image) and the Golden Dove. Also, whoot! Silktail! Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:51, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Was a great trip, though a bit damp! had some seabirds but only very poor-quality shots of Black-winged Petrel, Tahiti Petrel. RF Booby shots reasonable though. Will post a few more in days to come. Aviceda talk 02:32, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That reminds me, I should post my "barely tell its a shearwater" image of a Hutton's Shearwater from my recent trip to Kaikoura. Sabine's Sunbird talk 03:07, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any guidebooks which detail Blue-crested Flycatcher, and there is little online that I can see, so any info you can add will be great for a DYK or something. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 07:35, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have the HBW for the species as well as access to guidebooks for the area. I'll try and do something soon. Sabine's Sunbird talk 04:20, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rosella

[edit]

I have had a look through the Rosella images on the wiki today. There are not many of the Western Rosella, Green Rosella, or the Northern Rosella. Have you got any of these? Snowman (talk) 18:47, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have one of Green Rosella [9] but not of the other two.....have a look at my database [10]I can probably get permission for the use of any others. Aviceda talk 02:08, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully, will get onto it before the weekend Aviceda talk 09:09, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are lots of good ones there: A short list with reason.

  1. Ground Parrot. No image on wiki
  2. Budgie. No wild ones on wiki
  3. Purple-crowned lorikeets. No wild ones on wiki
  4. Musk Lorikeet. Excellent photo
  5. Horned Parrot. No image on wiki.
  6. Cockatiel. No wild ones on wiki
  7. Blue-eyed Cockatoo. No image on wiki.
  8. Blue Bonnet. No Image on wiki.
  9. Varied Lorikeet. No image on wiki.
  10. Brehm's Tiger Parrot. No image on wiki.
  11. Hooded Parrot. No image on wiki.
  12. Regent Parrot. The image on wiki is from the front and does not show the red in its wings.

I got the list down to a dozen needed on the wiki. Some of them are common parrots, but the wiki does not have photographs of them in the wild. I could choose hundreds more. Snowman (talk) 10:18, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have contacted the relevant photographers, will just have to wait and see. Aviceda talk 08:38, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Video enhancement software

[edit]

This sort of software might improve the sharpness of your video clips. As far as I understand the software looks at a sequence of images and by summation works out sharper images. I think that NASA used this technology to re-examine films of their early rocket launches in more detail. I think that various forms of the software are available now, but I am not sure if there is any free software. Snowman (talk) 10:49, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Don't suppose you might have a link to this? Aviceda talk 08:36, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are a number of brands, so I did not link any. Curiously, the wiki does not seem have anything. You will get some possibilities by web-searching with - video enhancement software. You could ask at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab or Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Images to improve and see what the image enthusiasts suggest or perhaps they might to the sharpening work for you. Snowman (talk) 08:56, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully the old analogue video-clips that I've posted will eventually be replaced by higher-def ones like the Collared Lories [11] that I recently captured in Fiji but if can find the tools that you have mentioned I will have a go. I also found a way of getting a specific-still to show as a 'thumbnail' but that doesn't always work. Aviceda talk 09:49, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Extra request

[edit]

Do you have any more pictures of Varied Sittellas? I've done a big expansion of the article on the family but it could use some more images I think. Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:31, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Will have a look later this 'arvo, but I'm not too optimistic, this is one species that I always find difficult to photograph. Have a look at my ABID database [12] I can ask fellow contributors if they could help but the response to Snowmans request last-week for Parrot piccies has been a bit under-whelming! Aviceda talk 02:36, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry too much, there is one image which is enough for now. If you haven't got anything then I'll contact people myself. I find I get about a 25% success rate on requests, although response times can be quite long! Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:07, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Potential articles

[edit]

In both cases it would depend upon the citations you would be able to provide. Articles in birding mags, in newspapers, journals, anything other than the sites themselves that helps establish some notability and confers some verifiability to the article. Sabine's Sunbird talk 07:37, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mailing list

[edit]

Hi Tom, I saw that you are attempting a draft. To work on drafts in "user space" you can create articles like User:Aviceda/Sandbox and them move it over. As for the article in particular, I must warn you that most mailing list articles get AfD'ied unless you can prove it is notable using the guidelines of WP:NOTE, particularly Wikipedia:Notability_(web). I suspect that Birding Australia can fail on that. Shyamal (talk) 08:07, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That seems a bit tough, I'm sure that the Birding-Aus archives will have plenty of material suitable for WP reference, have contacted the B-A moderator for refs but he may be on hols. Was also contemplating doing a similar article on my ABID database [13] but now realise that it would probably be a futile endeavour, oh well. Aviceda talk 08:48, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure is tough, but I guess in the end it has to be fair to all. Here is one where I learned - Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Natural_History_of_South_Asia_mailing_list, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Natural History of South Asia mailing list (2nd nomination), Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Natural History of South Asia mailing list (3rd nomination) Shyamal (talk) 09:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Shyamal, after scanning through that lot, I can see the voters may be more of a problem than the issue, might have to reassess my continued collaboration with WP after witnessing their childish behaviour. Aviceda talk 09:45, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That was not intended to disturb you, but I thought it is better to know ahead rather than to feel bad after. As far as species, concepts and other basic aspects go, I think there is consensus and clarity on whether Wikipedia can include them and I guess trying to push the boundaries of Wikipedia will be painfully democratic. The social interaction part of Wikipedia is something that can definitely be improved and I sincerely hope that you will continue to contribute. Shyamal (talk) 10:06, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No worries Shyamal, just a bit-deflated....WP is certainly a learning-experience. On a different note, do you know any experts in PHP programming that might be willing to renovate my ABID site? Unfortunately I'm not a skilled programmer and the web-master who created the scripts has disappeared! (Any assistance gratefully received!) Aviceda talk 10:39, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have emailed you. Shyamal (talk) 11:12, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What you basically need for academically oriented lists is to shows that academics use them. I will help if possible, but you must realise that the percentage of people who understand these are very few. I've been mainly trying to establish journals as notable, which is hard enough, though we seem to have succeeded for at least the ones covered by Journal Citation Reports. .The only one that have worked well are ones involving the sort of computer nerd stuff that many well established Wikipedia people know about, in which case it is possible to get a considerable number of respected editors saying, essentially, WP:IAR. I;'d love to establish more of them, but I want to start from the very best known. Or at least the best referenced. If you have anything you;d like me to check, let me know. And please also our Business FAQ which applies to non-commercial things just as well. DGG (talk) 22:07, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

new draft

[edit]

Okay, I edited it (hard to say). You can see what you think of my changes. I like most of it, but I'd consider taking out the two short paragraphs (third and last) that apply to all mailing lists. Also, the part about mention in academic journals cries out for a citation, but maybe you're already working on that. —JerryFriedman (Talk) 15:59, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate that Jerry, will try and sort it out this 'arvo (oz-time), should I add it to the article then? Aviceda talk 18:14, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be ready. By the way, if you're still on Birdchat, maybe you saw this interesting blog post with an impressive photo. —JerryFriedman (Talk) 20:09, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK Jerry, have added it to the birding article, taken heed of your comments, and added a citation... although I'm still not sure why you want to take out the 3rd paragraph...I haven't added much text so I'm very new at this. Thanks for the heads-up regarding the Cuckoo pic in the science article, shame I couldn't reference it on the article (...don't want to incite a COI) Aviceda talk 05:10, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

White-crested Hornbill

Do you think that the current infobox image for "White-crested Hornbill" is correct? I have listed the image on the Bird talk page for identification. Snowman (talk) 09:14, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think so, possibly a different race to the one found in Uganda? (more white on the head) Aviceda talk 09:25, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I am also waiting for opinions on the BirdTalk page. I think it is disappointing that Central Park Zoo does not have a list of their animals and birds on their webpage. Snowman (talk) 09:36, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure (I'd need to go to the library and its raining), but feel free to change it if you think it is incorrect. Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:31, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can we have some of your rain, please! I've amended the discussion pages of NZ and Stubble Quail to highlight the issue, the Quail that I saw on Tiri Tiri a couple of years back looked like normal Australian Brown (C. ypsilophora) to me. Aviceda talk 02:16, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages on Butterflies

[edit]

Morning Aviceda,

I think your edit history speaks for itself when I say you've been a great help at Wikipedia. I was wondering if there is any plan, or organisation to the expansion of your recently created stubs on butterflies, they seem less than stub quality...A single sentence on such beautiful animals seems a waste. I will see if I can find some information about them myself, but if you're already an expert, or have significant information, would you mind expanding them?

The two articles I'm mentioning are: Heteronympha banksii and Jalmenus evagorae

Thanks for hearing me out,

I'm currently headed off to work, however I would be more than happy to see if I can dig up some information on them and expand them :even if it's still at stub quality, some is better than none, right? =) Thanks for your interest, I'll let you know, and you can :tell me what you think.
Cheers,

Bird videos

[edit]

Hello

I notice you have uploaded a lot of bird videos. I have recently created Commons:Category:Bird videos, being split off from the parent wildlife videos category. Perhaps you could add the ones you have uploaded to that category? Richard001 (talk) 23:19, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Richard, will try when I a bit of spare-time (...am a bit short at the moment, though!) Aviceda talk 02:10, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, what a huge number of videos - the category must have at least doubled in size (and overtaken the mammals category)! It will soon be time to start thinking about splitting that category. You could probably get a bot to add the categories if you need to do something like that again; I'm guessing you could just list each file and a bot could add the categories automatically. Richard001 (talk) 22:24, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've got no idea how to make/use bots, any advice welcomed! (....will put a few more clips on today, have a day-off work) Aviceda talk 22:41, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quail

[edit]

Hello! Just wondering how you identified that quail as not being a stubble quail. Thanks for setting me straight. Grahame (talk) 16:39, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

G'day Grahame, Stubble Quail has distinct cream-coloured streaks, looking rather 'snipe-like'. Have a look at my [ABID] database (shows it far-better than I can explain in words!) Aviceda talk 03:15, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, it wasn't me... I just added the image to the article. It was User:Albval who made that screenshot. See the description page on the commons. -- Eugène van der Pijll (talk) 08:56, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tip about images of living things

[edit]

I notice you added Image:Red-necked Crake kuranda.jpg to the species' article recently. In this case the genus level article (Rallina) also didn't have an image. It's a good habit to check the 'next level up' and see if it needs one when you add an image to a previously image-less taxon. Of course, you may already do this most of the time (and I surely forget sometimes), I don't know. Richard001 (talk) 08:32, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

*Parrot video

[edit]

Parrot video on flickr. I wonder if you could upload this one to commons. I can only see the still frame at the moment. I have not seen the video yet, because I have not got the right sort of video player on this computer, and I am not sure what species of Amazon parrot there are yet. The look like Yellow-namped Amazons, but I am sure you will be more sure when you see the video. The other less likely possibility is Mealy Amazon. Snowman (talk) 11:26, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whistler & Koel

[edit]

The Golden Whistler is seriously messy group, and it is far more complex than an Australian and a Fiji species (indeed, even if splitting it is not entirely agreed upon how many Fiji species there are; one according to Howard and Moore, two according to Worldbirdnames). If I remember right, we're looking at a split into something like 6-7 different species (+ New Caledonia & Tongan Whistlers). I'll have to check the literature for details, but this is among the most complex taxonomic situations in Oceania and Wallacea. The koel taxonomy is more straight forward, but it is not a split into two species (it is a split into three; the Black-billed from Sulawesi and nearby being the third). I'll check up on it when I get back home. • Rabo³03:32, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Look forward to seeing your comments when you return, I'm off to Cape York (a week-Monday) so hope to have so more media in the New Year, Cheers, Aviceda talk 03:44, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Double-Eyed Fig-Parrot mages

[edit]

It would have been nicer, more tactful and courteous if you had just mentioned that you were replacing the images on the Double-Eyed Fig-Parrot article, instead of commenting that you were replacing 'poor images'. Your 'poor images' comment about my photos of the Double-Eyed Fig-Parrot was hurtful and totally unnecessary (I did the best I could). Figaro (talk) 05:26, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that, I had a look at the images that were uploaded, saw how small they were and thought that you were inserting content where none existed previously, hope I didn't cause too much offence.....rather tactless on my part, but similar things have happened to me lately. Aviceda talk 08:16, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining. Unfortunately, because of the long distance of the bird from the camera, the size of the Double-Eyed Fig-Parrot was only very tiny on the full-size digital camera photo (the same size as the images actually appeared on the article). I took the photos at Brisbane Forest Park and added them to the article because, up until that time, there were no images of the bird on the article.
Your images of the Double-Eyed Fig-Parrot are excellent. Figaro (talk) 11:40, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Future Birding

Hi Tom, It has always been tough for me to make any plans for birding because I mostly shuttle back and forth betweeen my home in Italy, and my family in the States when I do have time.

However, after I retire then I will have the time to dedicate to birding, first stop will certainly be the Philippines. I still have to learn how to become a decent photographer in the meantime.--Steve Pryor (talk) 11:52, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Galleries

[edit]

I have moved some galleries of photographs where the photos added little to the article. When expanding articles I have used as many images as possible to add value but there are situations where there are simply hundreds more and I find it hard to see the value of a gallery that is longer than the article text and when all the photos are of the same few birds. And I believe I am dealing with this fairly - see what I have done to my own photos for instance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramanella_variegata and the gallery of pictures that I do have on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Ramanella_variegata - I believe that any contributor of photographers has to see it in the right perspective. I can however see no problem with large galleries in under-developed articles, it seems like a good thing to have the pictures as inducement for article improvement and also provide a menu of pictures to use. Shyamal (talk) 08:42, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aviceda, as soon as the left of the taxobox is completely full with content - galleries might be OK (see ongoing discussion) but the more text the better -, you can set "image_width" in the taxobox at 200px to 240px (depending on whether the image is upright or sideways). It helps get rid of a fair bit of whitespace, makes the article layout less rough. For upright images, galleries next to it can be 5 "perrow" width, for sideways I think only 4 (at most screen resolutions). Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 21:29, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have started a stub on Kobble Creek, Queensland, which is where a lot of your photographs are taken. Kobble Creek in wikilinked in some of the captions. Bird calls in video clip

[edit]

Re: "File:Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo kobble08.ogg". The bird in the picture is quiet, but bird calls are heard on the video in the background. Are the calls that can be heard from other Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos or from another bird species? Snowman (talk) 17:23, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is the bird gnawing on a branch? if so it's almost certainly a Yellow-tailed Black calling in the background (was just outside my study window!) Aviceda talk 02:25, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is the video on the Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo page. If you are certain about the calls in the background, then we can add something in the caption. Snowman (talk) 15:11, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

At WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles, in which you are listed as a member, we're working on a pretty massive backlog (1000+ articles!) of unassessed articles. We would appreciate it greatly if you would help assess the articles in the link. It's simple to do!

  1. Read over the article.
  2. On the discussion page, look for the {{AARTalk}} template. Add in a "class" and "importance" parameter if the template does not have them already. Example: {{AARTalk|class= |importance= }}
  3. For the class, fill in the article's quality using the WikiProject's quality scale: stub, start, C, B, GA, A, or FA. Most unassessed articles will probably be stubs or start class articles, and definitely B or lower.
  4. For the importance, fill in the article's importance to the WikiProject using the importance scale: low, mid, high, or top. Most unassessed articles will probably be low or mid importance.
  5. Then you're done!

It's not a difficult task, but there's a lot to get done. Our hope is that we can chip through the backlog and assess every article within the auspices of the project. Thanks, bibliomaniac15 00:31, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
