North Carolina State Capitol

Hiya, APK. Been a while. I was just looking over the page for the North Carolina State Capitol and wuz wondering why it is under the "United States Government" stub category. It's a friggin' building after all. And a state one at that.

Other than that, the weather here's almost perfect for pictures again. I want to take a new shot of Raleigh's downtown now that the RBC Plaza is topped off and the Raleigh Convention Center is now complete. I also think an entry for the Longview (Poe) House might be good. Got any other requests? Jmturner (talk) 03:34, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

National Building Museum main image dispute

I reverted the article back to the condition it was in when I added Image 1, below. I believe this better represents the subject than the previous photo that you replaced mine with. I cite the now-inactive but still relevant appropriate illustrations: image purpose policy. Image 1 shows the National Building Museum from the front at a normal angle. It's centered and displays one of the main architectural elements of the building: the large vaulted roof and its tall windows. Image 2 is taken at an odd angle, and shows the side, not the main entrance, as does Image 1. Your reason for replacement was time the photo was taken. While Image 1 is a year or two old, the view has not changed, and IMO the quality and completeness of Image 1 easily trumps your age reference. Note that National building museum3.jpg has also been used. It is identical to Image 2 and was used in List of museums in Washington, D.C. which I also reverted to use Image 1. I am not just trying to get my photo back up; I am fully happy with somebody replacing this with something of higher quailty. I feel Image 2 does not better represent the subject at hand.

Please reply on my talk page should you feel the need to.

Image 1: National Building Museum photo I prefer.
Image 2: User:AgnosticPreachersKid's preference.

Hey, I just wanted to say that you were most helpful when I started out here, some while back. I appreciated that, and haven't seen you around. I hope all is well. Thanks again and enjoy your holidays. Best, MarmadukePercy (talk) 04:27, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

*lights dim low...walks onstage...waves dramatically*

Hey girl hey. After a long-ass break, and like Jesus and the coming Rapture, I'm back. Feel free to send me an e-mail if you want to know what's been going on in my strange world. I don't use the old address anymore, but I've already updated my e-mail feature. I had a love affair with flickr the past several months, so I blame that site for my absence. I have a list of 500ish articles/stubs that need writing, so like Amy Winehouse, I'm gonna get crackin. Ciao. APK lives in Dupont and Gomorrah 08:06, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Welcome back. You must have been thinking about me, since we both just basically returned to Wikipedia from lonnnng breaks. Ironic, no? - ALLST☆R echo 19:01, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
Should I tell them or do you want to do the honors? ASE and APK have secretly been vacationing...in Foley, Alabama. It's a classy and dignified resort town where dinner rolls are thrown and outlet stores are plentiful. Leather chaps are frowned upon, but the folks in nearby Florabama are more open-minded. That was the only reason ASE stayed. It was fun and I hope ya'll can keep a secret. We don't want all the queers flocking to our little slice of heaven known as...Foley, Alabama. Edmonson sisters and the Pearl

Hi welcome back - After having been off in the fall, I've been finding new areas of interest since return. The Edmonson sisters make a compelling story, but I agree that there could be a separate article on the Pearl incident. If you structure it along the lines of what the book sounds like, and also with more context on Washington, DC at the time and nearby VA and MD, plus the trial afterward and efforts to account for the people sold South, I think it would be really good. It deserves its own article as the largest attempted escape of slaves at one time, which is another way to distinguish it - and to show the advance planning. One account I read (from the article) said that a failed suitor of one of the Edmonson sisters was said to have alerted authorities, who sounded an alarm and took off after the ship. It wasn't a chance suspicion by someone on a passing ship.--Parkwells (talk) 12:38, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the response. I added possible sources to the article's talk page and I'm glad you noticed the dead links. One of those links definitely needs replacing since it's dead and is sourced about 20 times. I'll try to work on the separate article this wee. APK is not a Womanizer 04:49, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

One last favor!

Thanks APK, I wonder if you know we're neighbors. Really!! Anyway, there is a section in Wikimedia Commons for the Counting Crows. Is there a way I can place the ones for them in that area? Or is that not a possibility? Vickery will have to wait till I get him a page, and Lindley, until there's more text, but the other two might be really helpful especially for people who are writing pages for them in other language Wikipedias? Thanks.. --leahtwosaints (talk) 18:32, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

One day, I shall find you and kiss you on your beautiful forehead! I live right now in MD near the U. of Merry-land.. (HAR! That's a joke).. but once worked at "Food for Thought Restauraunt" - closed 7 years ago, north side of Dupont Circle, and lived really close! (it was cheap then).. and all over NW DC. By the way, I'm finding a few other needed photos. Will you help? Here's Rick Danko with Paul Butterfield both could really use the photos; I wonder if, for one, the photo can be sliced in half? Or does that violate the GFDL? Either way, they are neeeded![1] and Johnny Winter, [2] and Stephen Stills, [3] Canned Heat, [4], John Sebastian, [5], The Jealous Girlfriends, [6],

Once I learn how to upload stuff from Flickr (though I suspect I'd still need an Admin or someone else to check that I broke no copyright) I'll be glad to do it. But I really appreciate your help. It really bugs me to work on articles with no photo; almost looks like I never get anything accomplished! --leahtwosaints (talk) 02:11, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Doh! I didn't even think about Merryland. I never go there, even though it's 15 minutes away. I wish Dupont was still cheap. The rent sucks, but I'm still thankful to live here. I'll take a look at the flickr situation. APK is not a Womanizer 04:49, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, whatcha gonna do during the inagura-- I mean frustration? Darn near every road, bike path, whatEVER will be shut down. I gotta make it to GW University from College Park every AM and I am not going anywhere near it! Not till Thursday, thank goodness! Oh, last thing, thanks for moving the Counting Crows to their category in the Commons. But David Lindley is still with them there, and I've no clue how to move him, or even where! I need a tutor, I swear, with the media stuff especially. Help, kind sir! After this time, I'll ask Aleta or whoever to sic me on somebody else if you want.--leahtwosaints (talk) 21:12, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

CCT pic

I'll wait for a sunny day and take one of my own, something a little more rustic (like your original, just moved over a bit). The Dalecarlia Tunnel is nice. JohnInDC (talk) 12:58, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Now that I know the trail beside the canal isn't the Capital Crescent, I guess I've only seen a small part of the actual CC. I walk several miles during my photo hunts, and the day I took those photos was probably a personal record. I started in Dupont, walked around Georgetown, then west on Reservoir Rd, up MacArthur Blvd (with a pointless detour down Chain Bridge Rd, and then back to MacArthur), west on Arizona, until arriving here at an entrance to the CC. From that point, we walked down the CC to Fletcher's Boathouse and began on the C&O trail. After walking what felt like 50 miles, we finally made it back to Georgetown...then cabbed it home. It makes my feet tired just reliving the story. I've never seen the Dalecarlia. Actually, I haven't seen much of Maryland period. I'll have to rent a bike and check it out. I hope you get some good shots, but I hope you're not planning on venturing outside today. Cheers. APK is not a Womanizer 13:25, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
The CCT parallels the canal towpath for, I dunno, 2 miles out of Georgetown. For a mile or so they're right side by side. The towpath is, I think, nicer along that stretch but isn't quite as good for a bike. You should take a ride up the Trail! It's very nice, and quite relaxing (at least until you penetrate the suburban back yard leg, which is often heavily trafficked). The tunnel isn't much - I see it has its own entry - but it's fun to come across if you're not expecting it. I have an a few old film shots of it I took when the trail opened in the '90s - I'll see if any of those are an improvement and scan them in if they are. (I *am* venturing out today, indefatigable bike commuter that I am - but the return leg is in the dark, which is a lousy time for many photos). JohnInDC (talk) 13:54, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Alternative help?

Hey APK, I know you got a life and are busy too.. but Aleta doesn't know how to upload any photos- she's never done it, period. Can you please, please recommend someone who may help me out? Most of the 10 pics I have waiting with permissions, GFDL, ect are for really prominent musicians who have no photos on most pages. They include Rick Danko, and others.. please respond, or best yet, help me find someone who would help upload them. --leahtwosaints (talk) 21:59, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I've uploaded many photos as part of a Wiki photo project and have become familiar with creative commons requirements. Maybe I can help. — Becksguy (talk) 23:57, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Your image uploads

It's great that you are willing to contribute so many photos to Wikipedia, but wonder why (1) you are uploading low resolution photos. I suppose they are better than nothing, but may be of limited use in the future. (2) Could you please instead upload the photos to Wikimedia Commons? Right now, someone will need to go through the trouble of moving your photos there and deleting the ones here, and sorting them over there. If you upload them on Commons, then the German Wikipedia or projects in other languages can use them. Please let me know if you have any questions about Commons. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 16:08, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

I have to admit that I'm not sure what the difference is between low/high resolution photos. If I want to upload a high image, what do I need to do differently? Thanks for offering to help me in this matter. In regards to Commons, I don't like dealing with that site. There's too many rude sysops and retarded polices in my opinion. I recently contributed there in order to help someone having troubles with flickr uploads, but other than that I haven't uploaded anything for several months. APK is like a firecracker. He makes it hot. 16:46, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
I think you can do what you want, as long as you realize you are creating work for others. But, it's your photography; you can put it where you like. --David Shankbone 16:55, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
If this is going to be an issue, then I'll stop uploading. APK is like a firecracker. He makes it hot. 17:29, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
You should do whatever makes you happy. But encouraging better practices for the project as a whole is common. --David Shankbone 18:57, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry if you have run into rude admins on Commons. But, uploading them to commons will save someone from needing to move them to commons later. If you have trouble with Commons, let me know, and I can try to help. If you upload them here, maybe a bot can move them, but I'm not sure. Your photos certainly are appreciated (and I see a lot of great stuff on your Flickr page). As for low/high resolution, if you can upload the full/large size versions, that would be awesome. The larger versions are suitable if/when Wikipedia content gets reused, such as in a printed format. I see those available on your Flickr page, with the proper licensing. There are some tools (Commons:Tools) for commons that allow batch uploading and uploading directly from Flickr, which might be helpful. --Aude (talk) 19:21, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

There certainly are some gruff editors on there. Must be all the copyvios and nonsense they have to contend with; also, it's an under-manned project. I can help APK over there if he chooses to upload there, as well. --David Shankbone 20:17, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
Ah, the high resolution issue was much simpler than I thought. I'll check out Commons again to see if the bad apples have fallen off the tree. On a side note: I want to take some pictures tomorrow of the Messiah's inauguration, but the combination of a million tourists, crowded Metro stations, cold weather, and Oprah is making me weary of trying to witness the Second Coming. It's sad that I live less than a mile from the action, but can't really get to it (typing this while hearing helicopters and sirens outside). APK is like a firecracker. He makes it hot. 22:32, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
The neighborhood is apparently ready for tomorrow. APK is like a firecracker. He makes it hot. 22:41, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
I think you would need to be in the press area in order to be close enough to get any decent photos. The only question would be if Obama walks the parade route or part of it. Otherwise, he'll be in a limousine with tinted windows. What's likely is that you will run into Obama a number of times once he is president (e.g. going to Ben's Chili Bowl). I ran into President Bush and his motorcade so many times (and not only in DC, but in NYC and in Maine!). Obama will probably venture out into the city even more. --Aude (talk) 22:49, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
Ben's sloppy and artery-clogging burgers are the best. You're right about the likelihood of seeing Obama, although I hope his motorcade doesn't run over me. I came close to being roadkill in 2006 when Kofi Annan's motorcade was leaving a Georgetown University speaking engagement. APK is like a firecracker. He makes it hot. 22:57, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Photos: Bigger is better

Thanks for uploading great photos to Commons! A tip-- where are there are different versions availible, such as is often the case on Library of Congress images, please upload the largest/highest resolution when possible. Thanks! If you have any questions, do ask. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:57, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Hello there. I thought my recent uploaded images had been high resolution, like these? I'm still a little confused in regards to getting the highest resolution available. APK is ready for Spring 21:41, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Can you try downloading the TIFF versions from the Library of Congress? Though, Wikipedia and commons don't accept the TIFF format. So, the files need to be re-saved (and perhaps cropped) as jpg files. See this that I recently uploaded, which is 3000+ px in dimensions. I don't know what photo software you use? Something like GIMP (free, open source) or Picasa would work. --Aude (talk) 21:54, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
I use Picasa. I'll try the TIFF version and see if it works. BTW, here's a more recent shot of the Ringgold-Carroll House. :-) APK is ready for Spring 22:03, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Let me know if you have issues with the TIFF files. And, thanks for suggesting the photo. It gives me incentive to expand the article more and maybe submit it to WP:DYK. --Aude (talk) 22:10, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I uploaded this image, then uploaded a newer version that I hope is the TIFF. Let me know if that's correct. Gracias. APK is ready for Spring 22:52, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Whatever you did there is great. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 23:10, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Very cool that you took and uploaded the picture of Miner Teachers College for the Normal School for Colored Girls article. You might not remember me but I'm the one who originally located the "Nihang Singh with Big Turban.jpg" and labeled it as leader of the gay cabal whom, if I recall, you then immediately dubbed "Durka Durka". You're quite welcome my friend, and I could never forget someone that gave me Teh Durka. It still makes me laugh. Just to nitpick, if the Judiciary Square neighborhood stops at I-395, then the Georgetown University Law Center campus would not be included, as it's on the other side of I-395. That's all. Cheers, Postdlf (talk) 20:29, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

How dare you nitpick me? *nitpicks back* I kid, I kid. :-P You're correct in regards to the "official" boundaries of Judiciary Square, but the neighborhood surrounding GULC is one of those grey areas (well, it's pink on the map but you know what I mean). It's kind of like trying to figure out what neighborhood 1575 Q Street, NW belongs in (Logan, Dupont, Borderstan perhaps?) or the Hotel Rouge. Anyway, according to dc.gov real estate records the Gewirz Student Center is located in Ward 6. After looking at my options, I picked what was behind door #4 (cause Union Station isn't a neighborhood, IMHO). This was a long and linkilicious reply, but I'm bored. Cheers. I can tell you from experience, it is in a rather grey area. Postdlf (talk) 20:01, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
