User:Pageview bot
Appearance
This user account is a bot operated by Verisimilus (talk). It is used to make repetitive automated or semi-automated edits that would be extremely tedious to do manually, in accordance with the bot policy. This bot does not yet have the approval of the community, or approval has been withdrawn or expired, and therefore shouldn't be making edits that appear to be unassisted except in the operator's or its own user and user talk space. Administrators: if this bot is making edits that appear to be unassisted to pages not in the operator's or its own userspace, please block it. |

Function
[edit]Records the number of times a page has been viewed in the past month, to enable editors and WikiProjects to identify the most important pages (and satisfy curiosity!)
Operation
[edit]- Retrieve stats from squid server:
“ | Wikipedia uses Squid cache servers, which cache pages when they're requested. For example, if you enter URL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitten and get sent the page, the next time someone goes to to the same page, the servers will remember what the parsed wikitext was and greatly reduce the back-end server work. The servers also count how many times a different page is accessed. These stats are provided in raw form at here, and that's where the numbers in stats.grok.se's graphs come from. | ” |
- GracenotesT § 03:33, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
- Store stats of page of interest on a subpage of the bot's userspace, transcluding them with {{pageviews}} or otherwise.
- Pages to be logged are selected as those transcluding {{pageviews}}, or (say) {{WikiProject Statistics}}.
