flaw
[edit]This template allows lines from underlying articles to pass through it. I'm not exactly sure why so I can't fix it, but it's quite an obvious flaw. -- drrngrvy tlk @ 16:26, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Too long
[edit]This template seems far too long. I feel it is useful to have all the links readily available, but i'm not happy with the aesthetics of it, both on it's own and the way it can mess up the formatting of it's host page.
This issue came up as I was thinking that the template ought to be added to the impedance article (one of the few listed that doesn't include the template). There is an illustration of the complex impedance plane at the top of the page and adding this template causes issues with the positioning of the image.
A possible solution is to have something like the Template:Thermodynamic equations, that expands the section related to the current article. I have created a trial version of this at Template:Electromagnetism2. Note that several of the topic header links will take you to subpages of my user page; this is for testing purposes. I initially created the new template on my user subpage, but I think it has to be a Template: page before it can be called as a template (someone correct me if i'm wrong).
There is a formatting problem with the expanded lists; an extra space between the first and second items in the list. I will keep playing with this but if anyone who has more knowledge about this than me wants to get involved, that would be appreciated.

- I have fixed the formatting problem and started changing EM articles to this template. No comments on any of the article talk pages as yet.--DJIndica 16:26, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- In response to some very reasonable constructive criticism received elsewhere I have created yet another template. It was noted that to move between pages in different topics one had to navigate via the main article of the destination topic, which is not a big problem, but is far from ideal. The new template allows any or all of the topic lists to be expanded without leaving the current page, and still defaults to opening the list for the current topic. If all lists are expanded then the new template looks identical to Template:Electromagnetism. All of the pages I had previously updated to em2 have now been updated to em3.--DJIndica 22:41, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Too wide
[edit]Is there any way of the making this thing narrower? On a small laptop screen it takes up a lot of space, and displaces pictures from the top of the page. There seems to be scope for narrowing, given the wide margin either side of the image, and the wide gap in the text. --catslash (talk) 23:19, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
- I attempted to adjust the width of the box, but apparently my technique doesn't work, so I don't know how. I will copy your request over to Wikiproject Physics. ----Steve Quinn (talk) 01:26, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks --catslash (talk) 09:08, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- It's already pretty narrow IMO. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 02:26, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- I get a width of 300 pixels, at least 60 of which are blank. Take a look at waveguide (electromagnetism), and try varying the browser window width (I admit there's one too many pictures in the lede). --catslash (talk) 09:08, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- Now it's down to 204 pixels wide by 297 high. This is a big improvement, but I would still support the conversion to a nav-bar at the foot of the article as proposed below. --catslash (talk) 16:30, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Removing electrical network section
[edit]There is already a pretty descent electrical network navigation template, Template:Network analysis navigation. Would it be reasonable to remove that section of the electromagnetism in favor of that template? In my opinion it is only tangentially related to electromagnetism.TStein (talk) 18:37, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Please change to a navbar at bottom
[edit]Please change this navbox to a nabvar at the bottom of the article. As it is, it wastes precious screen space that should be used for pictures illustrating the topic. It also makes the article less readable, because it diverts the attention of the reader away from the head section just when he should be focusing on it. The reader has to spend a few seconds looking the box and its picture before realizing that it has nothing to do with the topic he is looking for.
All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 00:37, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
- If that's possible then it would be great for those of us using small screens (see my previous post Too wide above). Thanks --catslash (talk) 16:14, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
