Edoardo Tiretta

Self-Portrait (Ellen Thesleff)

[edit]
  • Crabbe, Gilee (2019). "Hidden Influences". FNG Research. 4. Finnish National Gallery. Retrieved 19 November 2024.
Quote, p. 3: "Thesleff was known to have practised automatic drawing...Thesleff continued working on the piece however, and when it was shown again – she dated it twice – the artist had worked on it further in sepia ink, giving it a deeper chiaroscuro, a technique resembling the sepiatone spirit photographs that were popular among esoteric circles at the time. 'The way the head emerges from the dark background makes it seem like an immaterial spirit in the process of materialisation,' said Lahelma. 'This processual method resembles the surrealists' quest to liberate the creative imagination by using experimental methods based on psychic automatism and trance states. Before the surrealists turned this into a conscious artistic method, this kind of technique was used in mediumistic art.' In Thesleff's piece, Lahelma continued, 'the introspective attitude is manifest both in technique and in the facial expression and the artist appears to be in some kind of creative trance. And this is a significant point, here it is not only the content or the subject matter that is connected to esoteric ideas but also the technique – not only what has been represented but how it has been represented. Perhaps here we can think of art as an esoteric practice.'"

  • Extremely cool hook—absolutely love it. Appropriate sourced in the article with a citation at the end of the sentence. Article is solid with no issues jumping out at me about copyvio. Painting is well into the public domain so I say we run it (especially since it's a woman's self portrait, which we lack representation on). Thanks for overdoing it on the QPQs! ~ Pbritti (talk) 23:53, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, User:Pbritti. I feel that in the interests of openness and transparency, I should mention that it's possible to make the hook even better. I neglected to do this because I was working on too many articles at once, but if you are interested in keeping this nom on your watchlist, I may be able to add an even better hook. It wouldn't change the current hook all that much, but it would add one additional component, namely that Thesleff was trying to evoke the style of a spirit photograph. As you can see, I only got as far as adding a see also link to the composition section. But I could probably work it in by tomorrow and update the hook if you like. I haven't figured out how to word it just yet, but it could read something like "... that art historians believe Self-Portrait may have been drawn by Ellen Thesleff in a trance-like state to resemble a spirit photograph?" Not sure how to do it, but it's something I've been thinking about. Just a note, there was one missing element that I was unable to track down. The Finnish language Wikipedia has an article that makes a curious claim. It says "Thesleff's father had died a couple of years earlier, and the gaze of the self-image of grief is thought to be due to the death of [her] father." I was able to confirm that her father had died (and I need to add that to the article, so I'm glad I'm having this discussion now), but I couldn't confirm anything about the relationship between the death of her father and this work, which could also add additional light on the nature of the spirit photograph. Was she trying to communicate with her dead father? We don't know any of this. But I did make a source request that is attempting to get to the bottom of this. For what it's worth, the Finnish Wikipedia claim is somewhat odd, as I could not find a single source that says this image is one of "grief". Viriditas (talk) 02:54, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not a review, but the hook rather buries the lede somewhat. Assuming they check out, I suggest ALT1: ... that the release of the .zip top-level domain was condemned by cyber security experts?--Launchballer 02:04, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was a case where I was steeped in the source material and after reading nothing but negativity about the subject, it was the fact that made me go "huh, actually less you say?" But I agree, this is an appropriate summary of the article. I may have also been trying to avoid the pitfall of being too negative, something that came up in my last DYKN. Nonetheless, though I'm not familiar with the process, I endorse the ALT1 in addition to my own phrasing. Bobby Cohn (talk) 02:09, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi @EF5:, review follows: article created 19 November and exceeds minimum length; article is well enough written and generally cited throughout, I've tagged a few instances where it is not; I am no tornado expert but the sources used look to be reliable for the subject; I noted that the "Meteorological synopsis" section is copy pasted from the source, but that this is from the federal NOAA so is PD; hook fact is interesting, stated in the article and checks out to sources; a QPQ has been carried out; image is OK but I wonder if the video could appear instead; they tend to do well at DYK. If you can address the citations needed I think this should be good to go - Dumelow (talk) 09:54, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Policy compliance:

  • Adequate sourcing: No - Only a few issues. For Pula: ref doesn't say "for several months in 2014" but "intermittently"; maybe "a second time"?; first Republican governor isn't supported by source. For Pulu: Ref doesn't mention Maʻopūtasi County.
  • Neutral: No - Only one issue: not sure calling him an "important figure" is due since the extraordinary claim is sourced to his campaign site, maybe "involved" is preferred.
  • Free of copyright violations, plagiarism, and close paraphrasing: Yes
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation

Overall: Whoa, the whole Pula-Pulu thing is catchy! I'm preferring ALT0. Pula is 3312 and Pulu is 2705; Pula moved to mainspace and Pulu created, both on 20 Nov (a week before nom). Earwig gives Pulu Ae Ae Jr. a 41.2% score, but it's mostly quotes. Everything else is good. @BeanieFan11: fix these issues and you're good to go. ミラP@Miraclepine 20:58, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BeanieFan11: Everything else is good, but yeah, I don't feel comfortable citing the "important figure" superlative stuff to what's technically promotional content, so I'd prefer adding that cited info from the Leone article to the article as a compromise. ミラP@Miraclepine 04:37, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The article was moved to mainspace on time and is new enough and long enough. Everything is adequately source and there are no uncited materials (I need an account to see the DOB reference so AGF). Both hooks are interesting, cited inline, and verified in their respective snippets, although I have a preference for ALT1 as I think it's more unusual or intriguing. However, it may need rewording since neither the article nor the source call her a "California actress" and they still consider her to be from Massachusetts. A full QPQ has been done and verified. My main concern at the moment is WP:DYKCOMPLETE: the article does not mention anything between her ending her acting career and her death, even though the cited obituary says that she became a columnist after her career. Her post-acting career stuff will need to be expanded before this nomination is approved. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 06:32, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. The Newspapers.com snippet about her post-acting life has only one page that's accessible to me, so I'd just like to confirm if the rest of the article confirms the other stuff like her writing columns. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:56, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Article was nominated within the relevant window and is long enough (extensive quotations do make that a bit hazy, but they're used appropriately). Earwig suggest that there was likely a problem regarding copyright, but a manual check suggested that it was all appropriate quotations and names giving false positives. No images (I think you could add the Texas star in there somewhere!). Not a barrier to running, but the infobox accepts his death as being in Calcutta despite the possibility that it was in Hong Kong; consider providing both possibilities there. General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

  • Adequate sourcing: No - Do we have a better source for the hook than the Spice House's own product page? This is a primary source, and I'm concerned that this might be pulled at WP:ERRORS because the current source may give off the impression that this hook/article is promotional.
  • Neutral: Yes
  • Free of copyright violations, plagiarism, and close paraphrasing: Yes
  • Other problems: No - The link to "holiday special" is currently a disambiguation page.

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: No - See above
  • Interesting: Yes
QPQ: Done.

Overall: @MaranoFan, thanks for nominating this article. The article looks mostly fine, though there is an issue with the hook source and with one of the links, which I've pointed out above. Epicgenius (talk) 16:53, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Article promoted to GA on 22 November; article is cited inline throughout to reliable sources; sources are mostly offline but I found no overly close paraphrasing form the ones I could access; hook fact is interesting, stated in article, it is cited offline but checks out in the Encyclopedia of Arkansas source; a QPQ has been carried out. • Very nice work on a worthy topic. Article is new enough (moved to mainspace 11/23) and long enough (> 5000 characters of narrative text). Well written and sourced. Earwig raised an alert with this source but a closer review reveals nothing problematic. The hook is interesting, sourced, and short enough. QPQ satisfied. Image has PD tag, shows well at 100x100px, and is worthy of the lead/image slot. Cbl62 (talk) 16:03, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Overall: Article is new and long enough. QPQ is done; Earwig detects no copyright problems. The hook is good and interesting. One small quibble: opera (barring some notable exceptions like The Magic Flute and the non-Guiraudified Carmen), is sung, not "spoken". I'll approve once this is fixed. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 04:29, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Superbly written and the coverage is probably as thorough as we can hope for (notwithstanding the one-liner "synopsis" which is somewhat amusing in itself---such a pity that the film is lost!!). Ticks all the boxes easily; no signs of copyvio as far as I can see. I like the original hook much better. Cheers, --KINGofLETTUCE 👑 🥬 07:06, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The article is sufficiently new, long enough and free from copyvio or other issues. It is appropriately sourced. QPQ is not required. ALT0 is negative in tone, so I wouldn't use this one. The second hook - ALT1 - is nearly there. It is supported by the source (video interview), but I wonder if ALT1 can be written a little more directly / a little shorter: for example
  • ALT1a : ... that Yuki Waga walked around his house repeating "Shikanoko nokonoko koshitantan" to create the earworm for "Shikairo Days"? or
  • ALT1b : ... that Yuki Waga created the earworm for "Shikairo Days" by walking around his house repeating "Shikanoko nokonoko koshitantan"? @Miminity: Chaiten1 (talk) 08:42, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaiten1: Thanks for reviewing. I'd change the ALT1 to ALT1b per your request. Warm Regards, Miminity (Talk?) (me contribs) 09:04, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Good to go with ALT1 as it now stands! Chaiten1 (talk)

Babak Ganjei

[edit]
  • ... that Babak Ganjei tried to sell a painting of his credit card to Barclays? Source: The Quietus: "Some major financial institutions, like Deutsche Bank and Bank of America, have whole art departments, swathes of liveried curators and indentured experts, to manage their art world acquisitions. The likes of Gerhard Richter will see the red carpet extended to them at JPMorgan, their works the very jewel in a collection going back decades, heavy with Picassos, Rauschenbergs, and Warhols. But when Babak Ganjei tried to sell his painting of a credit card, All the Power to Barclaycard, he didn’t get through to the corporate art department. He got Dan in Customer Services."

  • Comment: There are other neat things like the way it uses its paddles to burrow or swim (we even have an extremely cool GIF of the former from iNaturalist), easily the most fascinating aspect is the prolific cannibalism – as much as 1/3 of their diet in some localities, as I recall.

Overall: A QPQ is not needed. The article is long enough, has recently passed GAN, and has no copyright violations. ALT0a sounds better, but ALT0 is also fine. TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 17:37, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TryKid: @Mandarax: The only thing that makes me hesitant to just call it the "paddle crab" with no species name is that Charybdis japonica is called the "Asian paddle crab"; to be specific, authors will sometimes refer to O. catharus as the "New Zealand paddle crab". In fact, paddle crab is disambiguated for that very reason. It's a bit messy, basically. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 19:18, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just thought it read a little smoother, and didn't realize it might be ambiguous. I struck ALT0a. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 06:42, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
