Women's sports
[edit]the article does not really say if men and women are treated equal in sports at all.Italic text
- This article doesn't say much of anything. It's just a collection of shallow social rhetoric with few solid facts. The intro and "History" section need to be completely re-written. Djcastel 18:57, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
- I've rewritten the text and fixed the links and formatting issues.Djcastel 19:55, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
In regards to the history section, I think it is important that Title IX is mentioned and that you give a larger background of what it has done for women in sports. It is mentioned briefly in the Women in sports today section but I don't think it is talked about enough. Title IX changed the entire way women's athletics were seen. It is a huge reason why there are women sports today in colleges and high schools and why women's sports have been able to thrive. More information on the topic is definitely needed.Ilovedisneyland11 (talk) 01:08, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Ancient Olympics
[edit]a women may participate by sendnig a chariot, and even more there were some olimpic female chaminons who nevere been in olymic games, but become champions as owners of chariots & horses (Idot (talk) 02:44, 25 August 2009 (UTC))
Requested move
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
No consensus to move. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:45, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
Women's sports → Female participation in sport – Relisted. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:31, 27 June 2011 (UTC) There is no such thing as "women's sport(s)".Curb Chain (talk) 08:51, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
- Support some sort of rename. This article is not about women's sports (ie. heptathalon, softball, ringette, rythmic gymnastics), it's about women and girls in sport. 65.94.47.63 (talk) 11:29, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose. This is by far the most recognizable and common term for the subject. Powers T 15:10, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
- The problem is with ambiguity. Women's sports would indicate that only women play or the sport has a least a characteristic that makes women play it exclusivley. This article is about the participation of women in sport. As such, I know of know sports that makes women play a sport that men can't.Curb Chain (talk) 18:51, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- Right, there are no such sports, which is why the term isn't ambiguous. Only the least educated reader imaginable would think that there was such a thing as a sport that only women could play. Powers T 20:28, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- Weak support but with plural. Title sort of out of date I guess. Marcus Qwertyus 00:56, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well, that's a matter of Anglo English use and General American use. I don't matter if it is plural or singular either.Curb Chain (talk) 18:49, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Oppose. WP:COMMONNAME. The suggested new name is neither concise nor easily recognizable nor natural nor in common use. Google hits definitely supports the current title as is. "Female participation in sport(s)" gets less than 116,000 Google hits [1]; "Women's sports" gets over 6 million [2]. Softlavender (talk) 07:29, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- Google search returns are little more an outrageous guess. Google books is better but you still have to flip to the last search return to get the real number. (yes this is an template message but user is tired of telling people this). Marcus Qwertyus 07:42, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- When the difference is that profound, exact figures aren't necessary. =) Powers T 14:01, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- He means that google numbers are statistics and cannot definitively judge the adoption of a label.Curb Chain (talk) 10:36, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- When the difference is that profound, exact figures aren't necessary. =) Powers T 14:01, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
Support The suggested name is a good way to neutrally address topics that are far from settled (as evidenced by continuous Title IX court cases and legislative updates). The name is long and perhaps unrecognizable but the sentiment is accurate.Women's sports can redirect to the new title. Roger6r (talk) 18:12, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- Conciseness and recognizability are two of our bedrock principles of article naming. They should not be dismissed so casually. Powers T 18:53, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- I will adjust my wording the next time I dismiss something after careful deliberation. Upon careful deliberation, I agree with 65.94.47.63's discussion of the ambiguity infused in the term 'Women's sports.' I support the move because of my opinion that the bedrock principle of WP:PRECISION outweighs the principles of conciseness and recognizability in this particular case. Roger6r (talk) 19:34, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Comment. What about Women in sports? It's concise, unambiguous, and gets rid of the awkward possessive. It gets 1.3 million Google hits. Kaldari (talk) 19:29, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose while I agree that the proposed name is more politically correct, the current name is by far the WP:COMMONNAME. And that is by far the most important concern here. Arsenikk (talk) 23:20, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose. Apart from WP:COMMONNAME, this is the 21st century, and the word-game excesses of the 20th are now irrelevant. Andrewa (talk) 07:58, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
Proposed sections
[edit]I have downgraded the status of this sports page to Start class. Only History is comprehensively addressed.
Suggestions for additional sections:
- Olympic Sports
Description of the Olympic sports with female participation Subsection: Olympic Ski Jumping, the latest addition to women's Olympic sports.
- Highschool Varsity Sports
- Title IX — Preceding unsigned comment added by Roger6r (talk • contribs) 18:18, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- a section describing the rationale and origins of a gender fork in sports activities would make sense as well. particularly as many modern societies reexamine how they define and recognize gender or gender roles Zebulin (talk) 13:40, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Planned Edits to Women's Sports Article
[edit]Hello! I plan on editing the "Women's Sports" article as part of a class project. I will be restructuring the article, such as combining smaller sections together into larger ones; editing sections so they include the experiences of athletes in a greater number of non-Western countries; and adding new sections, like "Professional Sports," to further enrich the article. If you'd like to learn more about my plans, please visit my Sandbox, where I have included an annotated bibliography and more details on my plans. Thanks! Emilymohlin (talk) 03:20, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Updated sections of women's sports article
[edit]I have updated the "Battle for Equality" section with more information for the Norway and Sweden subsections (Ada Hegerberg's protest and the #ForTheFuture movement, respectively) and entirely new subsections about Jamaica (soccer and netball) and South Africa (soccer). I would love to update this section with more information from more countries than are currently listed (particularly from Global South countries if possible), as well as with more sports, so if anyone has any thoughts about relevant information that I should include, please let me know!
I also plan to continue working on this section, with information regarding Irish rugby and the #Legacy movement, as well as American ice hockey and the #DreamGapTour and the boycott of the NWHL. But I definitely would love feedback and am open to hearing ideas! Emilymohlin (talk) 05:22, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
Need more women's pro league info
[edit]If anyone has any women's pro leagues that should be included on the chart in the "Professional sports" section and aren't, please let me know or feel free to add them in! I'm sorting the leagues by country, in alphabetical order.Emilymohlin (talk) 22:55, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
Expanding the geographic scope of the article to include China
[edit]Hello Wikipedia!
I will attempt to increase the geographic scope of this article, specifically to include the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China(Taiwan). This area of the world is extremely populous and has a long history of women's sports, and has a high participation rate of women. Resultantly, I seek to provide an important storyline which is currently absent. This will include analysis of the Chinese Olympic industry, as well as analysis of the role of media, culture, and politics on women; focusing mainly on women in China and Taiwan. Further, I hope to analyze some of the ways in which women in sports are marginalized and underrepresented in these places. I will provide sources from a range of backgrounds and a variety of sports. The only difficulty is providing introspective sources from the People's Republic of China, as it is difficult for anything critical of the state-backed Olympic industry to permeate the intense censorship. Most sources will be from dissident emigrants or outside observers. For a complete list of sources I intend to integrate so far visit the sandbox accessible via my talk page. If you have any feedback or suggestions on that issue or anything else about my planned editing please reply or reach out on my talk page.
Thanks! Tancardinal (talk) 08:13, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
article review
[edit]Your article is very well-written and the information you added fits well in the article. I would focus on making changes to the lead sentence to give your article an assertive start and consider moving some sections around for clarity. The article is very easy to read and seems to take on a neutral point of view. Natsz72 (talk) 19:23, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
Peer review
[edit]Hi Emily! I think you've done great work with this article! I especially like the addition of the sex-specific injuries and the professional leagues; the first one especially also introduced multiple viewpoints to the article. The addition of professional leagues was also a great demonstration of women's representation in professional sports. In terms of changes, I would consider re-organizing the US: Title IX section for straighter flow and less redundancy, as there are existing subsections that also cover it. I would also consider adding some citations in areas that are lacking (such as Muslim women in sports). Amymu123 (talk) 00:44, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
Adding Germany as a Section (Wiki 4)
[edit]Hello Wikipedia community. I am excited to share my plans with you on how I will successfully contribute to the information already presented on the topic of women’s sports. The first thing I intend to do is create a new heading under the “History” section where I will title it “Germany”. As seen in the current article already, a summary of women’s sports in multiple countries has already been summarized. Due to the fact that Germany is and was one of the leading countries in Central Europe, I believe it is important to understand the role that women had in sports in Germany. The information I will use to support my points comes from chapter 2 of The Masculinized Female Athlete by Katie Sutton. One of the main focuses of this secondary source is the topic of women’s sports in Germany and the threat that women made to male dominance. I want to add information suggesting that female athletic dominance grew during the Weimar period in Germany and include some of the factors that contributed in this new era. Few opportunities made it possible for women to join sports programs and push boundaries within society. These included the enrollment of women in German universities, the rise in female employment, as well as involvement in war industries. All of these are examples of economic changes due to World War 1 (Sutton, pg.67). I want to make the point that women began to emphasize their sexuality and this drew attention towards growing athleticism, (Sutton, pg.67). This allowed women to grow and gain more publicity and attention to their place in sports. Altogether, I will be adding about 200-300 words on this topic. If anyone wants to comment on these changes, please let me know on this Talk Page or on my Talk Page. Thank you! Summer.Solomon (talk) 00:15, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
Battle for equality
[edit]The fourth and fifth paragraphs are not a neutral point of view and explanatory, but instead are opinion and advocate for particular action to be taken.
Female genital protector
[edit]Recently had to remove content claiming the female "jillstrap" or pelvic protectir was designed by a USA Miami man named Ronald Paramore in the United States. This information was originally from the wiki article "Jockstrap".
There is evidence, though currently not accessible online, that female pelvic protectors were available for female broomball and ice hockey players, as well as ringette players, in Canada by the late 1980's. Until this is sorted out, I think editors should refrain from giving credit to Paramore since this doesn't appear to be the case. CheckersBoard (talk) 00:41, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Lead issues
[edit]CheckersBoard, you restored content to the lead that is not mentioned in the body or supported by the sources. In this edit you added a source that does not verify the content at all. This compounds the existing issues with sources like the ones that are currently citation #7, citation #14, and citation #15. This article has serious verifiability, original research, and NPOV issues, and you are blocking incremental progress and worsening the problems. Please do not restore challenged material unless you can support it with reliable sources that actually verify the content. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 05:18, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
