Remembering Al Tinney
[edit]I met Al, his brother, Pee Wee, along with Earl Johnson and Lester Redwood -- who made up the Jive Bombers, at the Airport Inn in Lake George, New York during Labor Day of 1962. I had a great time and really liked their music. I lived in the Bronx, as did Pee Wee and Earl. I would go hear them play at places around the city, and they'd give me a ride home. I remember Earl's wife, Pat......can't remember Pee Wee's wife's name (maybe it was Dot), but she was a nice lady, too. I remember spending Thanksgiving 1963 with Pee Wee and his family in Hunts Point. I went to see them in various places in the city; Falcaro's in Washington Heights and The Lighthouse in Manhattan come to mind. I think their manager was Cliff Martinez.
They were a wonderful bunch of guys, and I have always remembered them fondly. They couldn't have been nicer to me. I always thought that Lester had a nice, soft voice and especially liked hearing his version of "My Funny Valentine". I often wondered what happened to them but figured that they had all passed away by now.
I last saw Al outside a place in Times Square where they were doing a gig. I think it was the summer of 1966. I remember having a nice conversation with him, same as always. It was so very long ago.
