Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns is a specialty hospital in San Diego, California. The not-for-profit, 206 bed hospital is one of four specialty hospitals organized by Sharp Healthcare. Also known simply as 'Sharp Mary Birch', the hospital specializes in women's obstetric and gynecological health, while their neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is available for neonatal healthcare. Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns delivers the most babies in San Diego County and is also the busiest maternity hospital in the state of California. The facility is home to the Neonatal Research Institute (NRI) and serves as a training facility for neonatologists.

History

[edit]

In 1992, Sharp Mary Birch opened as the largest and most extensive freestanding center for women's health in Southern California.[1]

In December 2018, the world's smallest surviving baby was born at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns. Born at only 8.6 ounces (245 grams), or the same weight as a large apple for context, Baby "Saybie" was at the time, the world's smallest baby that survived. Saybie had a nearly five-month-long stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sharp Mary Birch, however, when she was discharged, she weighed a healthy 5-pounds.[2][3]

Hospital features

[edit]

Sharp Mary Birch caters to the needs of women, expectant mothers and newborns. Each year, the hospital delivers approximately 9,000 babies.[1] Its NICU has 84 beds.[4]
