15 thousand ottoman janissaries and 40 thousand Tatars approached Chortomlyk Sich. After taking positions, 15,000 janissaries quietly entered Sich. They expected that the Zaporizhians would be drunk, frightened and unable to resist.
But after having discovered the enemy in Sich, the Zaporizhians opened fire from their rifles and killed almost all the enemies.
"When they themselves saw Sich full of their enemies-Turks, they quietly awoken all of their company, which was three and a half hundred, and told them about their misfortune, which was awaiting for them. They all quickly arose, quickly cleaned after themselves and geared up, and under the guidance of their huts of branches, ottoman they started making so much terror, that near each window they placed a few tens of their best shooters, so they would shoot without stopping, and so the others would reload their guns. After quietly getting along and praying to the Lord God, they quickly opened all of the windows and started shooting at Janissaries, damaging them a lot. This was also heard from other huts of branches, and, instantly seeing their enemies , they immediately lit it up everywhere. And from every window on streets of Sich and in the alleys loud sounds of continuous musket fire was heard everywhere, as if non-stopping lightning, enlightened the then dark night in their Sich; They beat the Turks so hard, that with a single fire two or three of them were collapsing. Janissaries could even move anywhere because of amount of people, just pointing their muskets in windows, they were shooting in air, and, rushing among themselves, like goats, they fell to the ground, beaten often and thickly, and drowned in their own blood."
