The category was to group together all of the stations on the line. All of the articles were removed from the category and I think that these removals should be reinstated so that the set can be grouped together. These was no reason for the removal of the category as otherwise they just get mixed-up in another category. Keith D (talk) 23:46, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As per Wikipedia:Categorization, only those categories should be created "under which readers would most likely look if they were not sure of where to find an article on a given subject". Further, WP:SMALLCAT provides that categories which "by their very definition, will never have more than a few members" should be avoided. With those principles in mind, I had the following reasons for listing this category for deletion:
In the case of the Hull and Hornsea Railway, the line was taken over, after two years, by the North Eastern Railway for which there already exists a category in which stations are listed.
If this approach were to be followed across the board, we would have literally hundreds of categories covering lines with only one or two stations.
Each station to which this category applies is covered by at least four other categories: Dates opened & closed, Former NER stations and Disused stations in the East Riding of Yorkshire. This is really quite sufficient and any more would be Wikipedia:Overcategorization.
The line cat is probably the one people would look for, as without prior knowledge you may not know that it was part of the NER or the dates for the opening/closing of the stations, the only one which might get you to the stations is the location category. I think that line categories are a good thing and that though they may be small at least group together a set of article relating to a specific line. I would not think that 5 categories is by any means over categorisation. May be we need to have a wider discussion on this? Keith D (talk) 17:28, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
