About his life and career

[edit]

Bhupal Rai was born in Bastim Village of Bhojpur (also known as Maajh Kirat), the eastern hilly district of Nepal.[2]

After his high school education, he moved to Kathmandu for higher studies. His first poem was published in "Chhahara" monthly magazine around 1977, a magazine published by his elder brother Gopal Chhanchha. Bhupal later became a regular columnist in "Chhahara" monthly magazine, with a satirical column called "Bela ko boli".

Rai dedicated some time to songwriting and musical composition in the 1980s, recording several songs as a singer for "Radio Nepal." After the 1990s, he decided to stop singing and concentrate on writing. His poems and songs tackle themes of racial discrimination, class struggles, and the culture and values of the Kirat people.

In September 2016, he visited Hong Kong after receiving an invitation from the Critics Society.
