Zee Hamid (born Zeeshan Hamid) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in a by-election on May 2, 2024.[1] He represents the electoral district of Milton as a member of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party.[2]

Background

Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Hamid immigrated to Canada as a teenager and has a Bachelor of Mathematics and Computer Science degree from the University of Waterloo. He was a tech industry professional [3] prior to entering politics and has worked at Microsoft, Amazon and DoorDash. He has at least two patents under his name[4].

Hamid and his wife have a blended family of six children[5].

Politics

Hamid was first elected as a Milton Town Councillor in 2010 and then re-elected in 2014. In 2018 he successfully ran for the Halton Regional Council as the Regional Councillor, comfortably beating a former Regional Councillor and a current Town Councillor. Hamid ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Milton in the 2022 municipal election, losing by fewer than 1,000 votes to long-time incumbent Gordon Krantz.[3]

On May 2, 2024, Hamid won 47% of the vote to 38.3% for Ontario Liberal's Naidoo Harris[6] despite polls showing a neck to neck race[7].

Before running as a PC candidate, Hamid had donated $3,508 to the Ontario Liberal Party since 2014, including to former Liberal leader Steven Del Duca's 2020 leadership campaign. He had also run unsuccessfully for the federal Liberal nomination in his riding for the 2015 Canadian federal election.[3]
